Hey all. A while back we were discussing other games and Magic Duels came up. As some of you are aware, Magic Duels is no longer being updated an is already one set out of date (close to being two sets out of date). Some of you mentioned enjoying the game or enjoying one of it's predecessors (Duels of the Planeswalkers 20XX). Wizards of the Coast has finally released some decent information on their next F2P game, Magic the Gathering Arena, that I wanted share with the community. I realize this post has nothing to do with MEA, let alone MEA:MP, but I wanted to share the news anyway, since it seems we have at least some MtG Fans. If you're interested, I would encourage you to read the article itself, but I can try my best to summarize some of the key features. The ability to draft cards and play in a limited format When fully launched, MTGA will support all cards in standard (unclear if the game will support standard as a format, or have it's own format like Magic Duels did) New game rules engine (which will hopefully be more robust than what we have in MD) So if you're tired of keeping space safe from giant teleporting gorillas and atlas wannabes, take a moment to sign up for the beta (PC only).

Too bad they don't mention whether it will include AI opponents.

Huh? MtG is still around. I also doubt MD has had much of an impact (positive or negative) on the MtG playerbase.

I'm already aboard the Arena hype train!
Also if you want to see an example of community management done right watch the Arena announcement Twitch VOD. It's slick.

Huh? MtG is still around. I also doubt MD has had much of an impact (positive or negative) on the MtG playerbase. Magic 2015 was the culmination of a great series, and was an amazing game in and of itself, Magic Duels was a shitty, buggy, grindfest of F2P nonsense, with a shitty card pool support by "new" mechanics in order to claim that it was better. Despite the addition of planeswalkers, the strategy depth in Duels was a mere shadow compared to previous games, the card pool was just pitiful, clearly not designed be people who actually built decks. Stainless has gotten even worse than BioWare for buggy games, and knee-jerk reactions that get them even more ire, coupled with a decidedly foul F2P model that makes even Hearthstone (that I actually tried because of how bad Magic Duels was) look reasonable, there really just is nothing to recommend Magic Duels, if you want a digital MTG experience, there only good option is Magic 2015, only other place you can build decks is Magic: Online, which has a very bad reputation for program quality (not to mention the expensive nature of it, being much more akin to RL magic, that I personally got out of due to Standard rotation and €140 lands that weren't even anything special, but just happened to be Green/White colour set). Honestly not interested in another F2P Shitfest in the MtG series, it needs a return to glory, with a decent single player campaign (Magic Duels was a shitty over-extended tutorial labeled as a campaign), complete with deck building, and a strategic card pool. The problem with MtG games was never having to buy/pay for them, the problem was bugs (which honestly, Stainless TENDED to fix... EVENTUALLY), and lack of deck building. F2P does NOT solve ANY of these issues, all it does is try to scalp people.

Not gonna lie I felt Magic 2012 was the most fun, and 2013 had the most well-constructed decks. 2012's red burn deck earned me so much hate mail... :amirite: Downside to 2012 is some of the decks were stupid OP, especially DLC ones. I liked 2013 because as I said the decks were pretty well-constructed allowing at least two strategies via builds in each, and they were all pretty balanced against each other. I did not like 2014 because it got super boring playing against Dodge & Burn every fucking game. I did not like 2015 because even with full deck customization there were cards you 100% needed depending on if your deck used the appropriate colour, otherwise it sucked. To me it was very bland despite the large amount of possibilities. Like said above Duels was a buggy grindfest. It got better as more cards were added allowing a huge amount of options, but I couldn't see myself sinking enough time into it to make it worth my while, not when I was playing two other games that were already big time sinks. I may not even download Arena.

For some reason I was able to tolerate all the issues and keep playing until the end of support.

When has MTG been anything other than buying randomized card packs, then playing for free?
