If I'm a mage, Fenris doesn't get used much till act 2, because I want to use Carver as much as possible while I can. Likewise I usually pick Bethany instead of Anders in act 1.
I have a habit of romancing the character most similar in abilities to my own, so love interests tend not to come along that much.

Aveline and Varric are most of the time with me. The last one who accompanies me is interchangeable.

Easy. I usually play as a Male mage Hawke, so it goes something like this: Carver and Varric -and then everyone else. The only companion I never take anywhere, is Anders.

Two warriors. Fenris and Carver in Act I, Fenris and Aveline in Act II & III (except on certain missions).
One rogue, almost always Varric. Sometimes Isabela (depends on the mission).
And one mage, Hawke.

I tend to find ranged companions easier to use than melee ones. I need to control Isabela myself to get the best out of her, otherwise she has a tendency to die and not make the best use of her abilities. Fenris also seems to die quite a lot for me, though he can be built as a tank.
When I played through as a mage I found Aveline plus Varric and another mage was a good option, usually Merrill as I had creation spells, but otherwise Anders is probably better.

Most of the game i've played with two warriors(Hawke and Aveline) ,Anders and Varric. That is the synergy that works best for me. Still, like any DA game,i'm trying to mix my team up as much as possible,at least for the quests that i deem easier(it is easier to do ifd you're not playing on Nightmare ofc). I really feel bad for leaving Companions behind The different banter combinations is of course the greatest payoff!

Varric all the time, same with Aveline. Bethany if I'm not a mage in act 1, Carver is always left behind. A strong case can be made for Anders as a healer is very useful, otherwise I pick an alternate mage/ rogue.

I most often play a mage/Spirit Healer, so Anders is almost always benched anyway. If I'm playing a rogue, I tend to bench Isabela over Varric. (I don't have the Sebastian DLC, so that's not a facotr.) Aside from that, it varies. Sometimes I like to have a gal squad, or be the token human with a couple of elves and a dwarf. If I'm trying to get everyone's friendship/rivalry up, then I'll take whoever's needed for the mission. Since I tend to play on the easiest setting, I'm not worried about party composition for survivability, as much.

Well for me it depends on the playthrough largely with my heroes but that's the case with all these games. I tend based on what mission it is and also who I think will best compliment my characters abilities although usually one of the spots usually goes to the love interest and the sibling if they can be used

I like to have one ranged character in my group - whether Hawke, Sebastian, Varric, or a mage. Other than that, I take pretty much whoever I feel like taking. Double-mage or double-archer group is OP as hell.
One of my favorite groupings is the triple-rogue party. The most recent configuration I used was with Warrior Hawke (2-handed with Reaver specialty so he can self-heal) + Varric + Sebastian + Isabela. No dedicated healer, but most enemies go down so quickly one isn't really needed.

I like Anders in the group, but rather as damage, and Hawke mostly a mage (and I have a warrior reaver/berserker). With Fenris and a rogue or Merrill, this is destructive.

My party was mainly Hawke,Bethany, Anders, and Aveline. When Bethany was taken from me I used Merill in her place. So basically it's warrior, warrior/rogue and two mages. After I complete playing DA:O I will play DA2 a second time and switch the party, though Anders will always be a mainstay for me. The first time I played a warrior Hawke, and for the second time I will play again a warrior Hawke. Cause I can't imagine doing that Arishok battle as a mage or rogue.

A mage has the best chance against the Arishok (against every non-magical character – mages are dangerous!) and has a distant attack. With rouge also imaginable: a rogue's flexible, has many tricks. I suppose this battle most difficult with a warrior. Or just a mage and a rogue not that heroic feeling?

The problem I'll have with playing mage is losing Bethany early on. But then again I could always level up Hawke the same way I leveled up Bethany. Choosing the same skill trees and play style. I'll see when I start a new game. As for rogues, I normally am bad when playing rogues in any game. Can't never get used to the idea of backstabbing the enemy in combat. I always approach them as a warrior.

Okay, don't have as much health points, as a warrior, but has many useful skill. And have mabari. I do not really know the rogue, but many people love it.

I have to try to fix that before I play.

As mage, you can stun him with a lot of spells, as rogue, you can use decoy and he will attack the false Hawke. Both great fun I try to have everyone in the party, apart from Sebastian, so I switch a lot. Anders is a good mage companion, when I play as a rogue. Aveline and Fenris are both good as warriors and don't get me started on Varric and Isabella, they just rock (in every aspect). I think, both siblings are good and I use them as often as I can. Merrill stays at home the most (apart from Seb), simply because I like two rogues and a warrior and Anders and Bethany are the better mages imo. I even gave Merrill the Spirit Healer tree with a mod, but it feels kind of wrong. She does a lot of damage though

After I finish my Dragon Age: Origins playthrough. I am going to replay DA2 as a mage. What party composition you think works best with a mage?
I was thinking Carver, Aveline, and Varric. Does anyone know a good combo. Also how do I make Fenris an effective warrior. I am always bad with making two handed warriors.

But I already know all the party banters... But I play on normal-easy, so: the party setup no matter, it's just for fun and RP.

I like a two-Mage party with Mage Hawke, Merril, Isabella and Aveline. There's very little that this setup can't handle. Aveline tanks, Isabella provides extreme single target damage output, while Hawke and Merril provide AOE cover, crowd control, healing, debuffing and utility. Isabella in particular is an absolute monster at higher levels. I usually end up with her critical strike damage completely off the chart; she's like a human buzz saw! I just used her to burn down Meredith quickly during my last playthrough while the rest of the party kept the statues occupied.
This line-up also has a great group synergy in terms of friendship and banter. Isabella and Aveline can initially be a bit snarky with each other, but the banter becomes increasingly good natured as the game progresses. I don't have any particular story-related or lore reasons to use this party, it's based purely upon versatility and that nice group dynamic.
There's times when I have no choice but to swap Isabella for Varric (such as The Deep Roads, end of Act 2 and Legacy), and obviously Talis takes Isabella's place for Mark of the Assassin, but on the whole the above is very much my core team, my posse of choice.
Conversely, if you want a pure hate fest, use Anders, Fenris and Merril. The bad vibes are palpable.

I play the game on Nightmare so I bring a party that I believe is the best for that challenge : Spirit healer Hawk : Aveline, Varric and Merril. 2h Warrior Hawk : Anders, Varric and Merril. DW Rouge Hawk : Aveline, Anders and Merril. 2h Warriors are annoying on Nightmare as they do way to much friendly fire, need to micro manage them constantly as they one shot companions like Varric all the time in tight spaces which is why I only bring Fenris for his personal quests, 2h warrior tank is a lot of fun though. First of all I didn’t know ME3 veteran Bateman likes DA2. . I also always play on nightmare. No matter what my character is my sibling go everywhere I Act1 and legacy and MOA. So deep roads is always Anders and sibling. Otherwise I tend to rotate. I make a save before challenging battles and try with every combination each. IMO everyone’s hated Sebastian is one of most powerful in battles. If I am S&S warrior Aveline stays behind. If I am Mage Anders stays behind (except for the deep roads). Isabela is worthless until act 3. But she is freaking awesome in banters and always go to Aveline’s quest. I do figure out how to run Fenris or Hawke as two handed though. Disable Mighty blow and scyth. Control them and reach those distant archers and mages with scyth and massacre them with mighty blow before Isabela reaches to get herself killed. Set all rouge and Mage tactics to target of Fenris or Hawke. If I am a rouge, Aveline is my big girl. Mid act 2 and Act 3 , Merril transforms into mass murderer so she follows. I try yo avoid Anders, as with his haste and healing, he makes battles far easier.

Right now I'm trying to compose a team for the Ser Varnell quest, the Wounded Coast, and that creature the Keeper wants you to face near the Dalish Camp. They are all act II quests, but they are tough. I was thinking of using Aveline, Isabela, and Merrill along with my mage Hawke. There are two types of creatures that always kill me most of the time. Demons, and Marbari. I like Fenris and Isabela but they are crap, I don't know how to best utilize their skills. Fenris is like Sten and Isabela is like Zevran in DA:O, I don't like using them. I've been getting away using 3 mages and a tank, but this time it's not effective. I need a better team. So does anyone have any suggestions for the above quests?
