I played a bunch of MEA when it launched but due to disappointment with the state of the game at launch and real life issues had to put Mass Effect and gaming in general on a backburner for a while. Now that things have stabilized a bit and the game got patched more I was thinking of getting back to some MEA.
Wanted to ask how the game has changed since 1.06, since that's when I stopped playing, and what is the state of the playerbase?

The problem with questions like this is that you are going to get some people responding who've given up on the game that still post here, and you'll also get people replying that still play.
I still play but nearly all multiplayer now, and yes they've fixed a lot, but they have announced that there will be no further bug fixes or support done by way of patches after the 1.10 patch.
As you own the game already, give it a go, see how you get on, and see if you personally find there is interest there for you.. only you can make that call really, and relying on the opinions of others may sway you, but really it should be you giving a go that seals your decision?

Seriously, buy Destiny 2. It's much better all around and is way less grindy. I'm pretty casual and have limited time but have already leveled to 20 and have a bunch of exotics unlocked - without spending a dime above the purchase price.
Gameplay is a lot more comparable to ME than people make it seem (but with a much better fundamental core). Cooldowns IMO are pretty close in pve - most kits have a way to drive them down (especially warlocks). I play a voidwalker warlock that recharges his powers very quickly if I keep my kill count up.

I still like MEA a lot. I've made peace with the insane manifest and just play for fun. The actual game is a lot of fun. Some of the best Mass Effect combat ever, and no need to sit through conversation wheels to get it. It's still pretty easy to get a game too, at least on Xbox.

I started right after the 1.10, and I found that earning vet bonuses on both common and uncommon characters was quite easy/rewarding, but that's me. Common characters with vet bonuses are capable of soloing Bronze and playing Gold, so between the two and challenges, things did go fairily fast for me until the rare level. Obviously, the OP did not specify what he considers "worth" playing. If it is a full manifest and platinum games, then, nope, not worth it. If it's having a bit of fun, my experience is it is fine for 50-100 hrs. If the 4 new kits they still have left were 2 Quarians, a drill and a vorcha or volus, or if the ripped 4 or 5 more maps from the game instead, I'd still be playing, happily unlocking common variants & rare chars vid mission funds. It's workable for me and rewarding enough. |

On PC, I still find lobbies quite easily if I want to pug. I have bunch of friends with who I play regularly. I like the game and I'm having lots of fun playing it. Grinding for the manifest or rising in the ranks isn't my thing, so I don't care about that. With little more than 60 hours gameplay, I have unlocked most of characters and basic guns (not meaning the variants siphon, bulwark and concussive). I have maxed out my common and uncommon characters, guns and mods. I rarely experience any bugs, except for losing the sound (not a problem for me). Good luck finding out! |

All I can say is this: every time I give MEAMP another go I usually get bored VERY quickly, quit the game and either stop playing or load up ME3MP instead. But like others have mentioned: you should just try it yourself. I would however not waste endless amounts of time into grinding for credits if you don't enjoy the game and hope "maybe it will get better" - because it won't.

If you already own the game, play the game for what it is. As said above, most youll lose is your sanity. There wasnt really any manifest bloat. 3 more packs I max my rares, and I play 1.5h tops. The core of what you get depends on if your grinding bronze thinking youll max this century. Or if you like waiting, (pc is dead gold plus). Or if you like casual play. (Nothing hardcore in mea)

Many thanks for all responses. Took the advice and played a good 3-4 hours of MEA and it's a mixed bag. Moment to moment gameplay is fun. Powers and such are great, weapons feel a hell of a lot better and more objectives and map variety (when lobbies exist, more on that later) made the game feel fresh. Headshots are still a roll of the dice. Especially on moving targets. Sometimes they work as intended, other times I'm jamming my Hornet up against a Krogan's skull and it still registers as bodyshots or sometimes shooting someone in the shoulder registers as a headshot. Go figure. Playerbase took a dive from the looks of it. I wasn't playing on North American prime time so take it as you will but finding gold lobbies that were not set to either the daily APEX or just Icebreaker was a chore. Out of about 12 or so rounds I played, 9 were Icebreaker. Looking for any other map just sent me to my own lobby with no one else joining in. At least the new Icebreaker "day" version is much nicer to look at than vanilla Icebreaker.  Overall it was an alright experience. Hopefully there are more people around during NA primetime because the gameplay is fun enough. Probably won't keep me hooked for 1500 hours like ME3, but if the lobbies are there, I can easily see myself jumping in for some MEA goodness occasionally to get my co op shooter fix. |

For a new player, it is not worth it. The loot pool is insanely large and divided not only in tiers but also in layers within each tier (characters first, guns next, mods last) to a point that working on a fresh manifest is incredibly frustrating and time consuming (something which in itself would not be a problem provided the game were still being supported and had many active players).
If you have a somewhat intermediate manifest as well as friends who still play it and you can't afford to buy a better game right now, I'd say it is worth coming back for a match or two a day.

The fewer players are out there, the less likely new players will get hooked, so indeed looks like Meda is approaching its final weeks. It'll then ascend/descend into a condition similar to DAIMP with a stable group of about a couple hundred people still playing on a regular basis mostly in private lobbies. |

Hey Shady it's been a while! Wish I could play a few matches with you but my gaming rig was sent to repair this month so...
I think the answer really depends on how much time you plan to spend on the game, considering its current sate. Yes it's much more stable now than 1.05 era (I couldn't play a straight match back then due to constant crashes) but they've diluted the loot pool in such a bad way that it will take ages to complete the manifest for a legit player (there may be "Space Magic" if you wanna do it other ways though;).
The jetpack is fun but gets old after a while. Also there's no reload canceling, making single shot weapons a bad choice. In general I feel the game is less tactical than ME3MP. The netcode is worse than ME3MP too (notably headshot registering and enemy movement sync, etc.) so you're likely to have a bad time playing off host. Try host your own lobby and wait for others to join, at least you are in NA so there's still a player base, in Asia it was a ghost town long ago.
My suggestion: yes it can be enjoyable if you are coming back to play loosely for a short while, as long as you can find people to play together; but no if you plan to play it for a long time, there are just tons of far more satisfying options, including ME3MP.

Same here but its mostly because the community seems dead. The majoryty of the damage has been done and most have quit and moved on. I try to get a few pug games going but eventually with noone to talk to it gets boring. |

I can understand people getting bored with MEAMP if you have to play alone all the time. I personally never really pugged Gold or Platinum in ME3MP either because it just didn't feel like fun to me.
Having even one friend to play and chat together with makes all the difference in my opinion. That translates to most MP-Games, though.
