What would you guys think of us having our own mercenary band like The Bull's Chargers? It would provide a good in-universe excuse for why we would get involved with various conflicts throughout northern Thedas.

I wouldn't mind. I like that sort of thing. Whether necessarily mercenary, or not, the idea of a group of outcasts and highly unlikely heroes thrown together, and stuck together, that somehow-against all odds-form an oddball family appeals to me. Maybe that's why I love the BSN.

Maybe we could get the Champion of Kirkwall to lead it and call it the Band of the Hawke. Actually, OP, that would be an interesting idea. So props.

Maybe that's why I love the BSN. That's a perfect description of this crazy place. I like OP's idea quite a bit. The DA2 cast being my favorite group of oddballs. It would be fun to be able to create a merc band, having a choice in the type of people you recruit.

In Dragon Age 5, perhaps. I don't think it would work with what is set up for Dragon Age 4.

I'd be interested to hear Considering how Trespasser ended, we are either going to be the Inquisitor again(please I hope so) or we will be working as members of the secret Inquisition. Add to that our connections with Tevinters like Dorian and that connects us to the Qun-Tevinter War as well.

It'd be simpler to just start out with them or be an individual sucked into the plot like previous games.

Yeah that could work. It even works if we play the Inquisitor again, since they have practice pretending to be a mercenary(if not were one before DAI).

This idea is sort of my theory as well. I think the inquisitor storyline is over
I think the idea will be to find people Much like dao
My guess is we are somehow immune to solas in some way but I still find it hard to believe they make us ordinary (maybe we are tainted by lyrium)

yes! heck in dragon age 2, i pretended that hawke runs a merc band in many of my playthrough (and let's face it, it's kinda like a merc band ). so yeah that would be awesome. inquisition was great, but running an organization this big kinda takes away the personal touch, still nice and all, but i miss the personal touch. being a leader of a merc band could be great, you recruit people into the band and can run it the way you like, either taking any job for money, or more like a band of thieves, or maybe a band of do gooders mercs that only take "moraly" kinda job that helps people. so many possibilities! =D

Interesting idea...only I don't want to start out as the leader.
They can do that later as cliche as it sounds, where you take over the band after the leaders death.
Or...save it for a dragon age tactics game in the same vein as fire emblem.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. It can also solve the problem of the origin stories with making all the origins same. You can start as a second in command or in a lower position but your superiors get killed for a plot related reason so you get to be in charge and build your band while seeking revenge or something.

Mercenary background is pretty much universal - your character is expected to have some combat experience and they don't have to be that much educated (I mean, PCs from previous game asks so many stupid questions about basic lore even if they're of noble background). It also creates a lot of possibilities for character's motivation - money, fame, adventure for its own sake...
Having a small company would also mean that war table-like missions would probably come back.

I like the mercenary background idea, but I'm guessing we'll be operating as more of a spy agency throughout the game, a secret arm of the Inquisition, or just the Inquisitor if it no longer exists. Don't want Solas' agents infiltrating us again. Maybe instead of establishing camps, we'll establish safe houses with businesses that act as fronts...
Although, maybe a mercenary band would be a good cover?

All of them are cliche. I would just say copy Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for it. Recruit permanent characters, tactical based gameplay, hell do the same sort of story.

Well, technically we are already mercenaries, given the amount of side quests needed to fund our operations and influence. Not to mention how just about any group of Bioware Companions fit the "Ragtag Bunch of Misfits" trope.

Bah, my protagonist is much more important to be the leader of some vagabond mercenary company. They need to be in pristine positions like leading the Inquisition, being the head honcho of the Wardens or being king/queen of the realms.
