Sure, they could say it's not canon but...there would still be sneaking suspicion that that's how those character were supposed to be according to them and that doesn't sit well with me.

Comic book movies aren't made for comic book readers yet comic book readers can still appreciate new takes on time-honored classics even if they take great liberties with the source material... how are we any different? Mass Effect's lasting appeal lies in it's established characters, iconography, themes, locations and it's central conflict without them it's Mass Effect in name only isn't it? Good or bad or painfully mediocre, for better or worse, I want the Mass Effect movie to be based on Mass Effect not... random peripheral shite: a mass effect story.

Difference is, they never controlled any of those characters or controlled their choices (well, at least partially). My Shepard is mine and different from the one you played as, while say, Spiderman is the same person for every reader, no matter what they would have him do because they have no input. I can appreciate different take on comic book, because the way one enjoys comic book and the way one enjoys a Bioware game is quite different. And so I'm not at all interested in seeing story of different Shepard, because that Shepard is not the one I shaped.

And as I said, I believe there is much more to Mass Effect outside of Shepard, sure, you see the universe through their eyes, but just the technology, aliens, cultures could make for an interesting story that would have nothing to do with Shepard. And I don't think that's just random peripheral shite. Now if the games were called something like "Shepard" or something, then you would have a point with that.

But about what you said about prima donnas in Hollywood, yeah that's the main reason I don't want to get into the acting business. I look at guys like Uwe Boll or Justin Bieber and I think, "Man, I want beat the fucking shit out of those guys." Bad thing about Uwe Boll was the whole boxing matches witch critics thing.
EDIT: I'd also tell Michael Bay's movies are fucking garbage to his face.

Video games movies are just shit in general. Granted, I like Resident Evil Damnation, the first live action Resident Evil was alright, and I heard several people liked the first Mortal Kombat film. (Haven't seen Mass Effect Par agon Lost yet though so I can't comment on that). I wonder if it's because they tend decide to hire a shit director and a shit screenwriter.

Good riddance, a film based on such a limited universe that empshazies on player shapping the narrative is a bad idea.

The only type of videogame story that would work is a one that is highly faithful to the lore and backstory but not faithful at all to the characters, events and developments from the actual games.

A film about the First Contact War or the Skyllian Blitz would be acceptable, these events have a set outcome, making them poor videogame material, but they lent themselves rather well for linear film narratives.
