According to Cassandra, she received her Seeker powers after spending a year in meditation, emptying her mind of everything and at the end of it a spirit of faith touched her mind, bestowing the Seeker abilities.
Then after reading the Seeker History, she claims they made her tranquil (how is not clear) after which the spirit touched her mind and the rest followed.
Now we had previously been told that most Seekers are recruited as children and even Cassandra was considered old as a teenager.
Then we are told in WoT2 that Lambert was simply an ordinary Templar until the age of 25, when his negotiating skills on the Tevinter border with Magister Urian (later to become the Black Divine) so impressed both the Magister and his own superiors that he was recruited into the Seekers of Truth. So did he go through the same process as Cassandra?
What also puzzles me is the exact nature of the spirit that touches the Seeker's mind. Presumably it is a faith spirit but what exactly is it looking for? Single minded, fanatical devotion to the Maker? How do he Seekers attract it to the person? The bit that has me puzzled is that Lambert originally had a much more moderate view of mages and for many years was a good friend to Urian. Then when he discovered had Urian and his fellow Magisters had been deceiving him, he became hard line anti-mage and it would seem anti-spirit. So how does that work when you are actually getting your powers from a spirit (which he would have known as Lord Seeker)? Or is that something in the past; a once only touch of the mind that somehow protects it?
How does the type of faith spirit that creates a Seeker differ from the type of faith spirit that resurrected Wynne or aids the Inquisitor in the Fade? Any ideas?

The implication is that during their Vigil, the Seekers make themselves tranquil by sheer will alone (or with lyrium, we are not sure). Then the vigil also includes a ritual specific in that it's purpose is to attract a spirit to touch the tranquil Templar's mind in order to gran them their powers.
But in the end we have nothing concrete. Presumably it is the devotion and thoughts invoked during the vigil itself that "guides" the spirit of faith to gift the Seeker with his/her abilities (and may be why Seeker faith spirits are so different than other faith spirits). If true, then no real perquisite training is required to complete the vigil--only an exceptionally strong faith/belief.
But it is all only theory by this point. I have a feeling that when Lambert found out the truth, he used his temporary "spirit touch" (may be interpreted as temporary possession) that resulted in how power to be more critical of mages. Lambert was only touched by a spirit and it gave him amazing abilities, but he was required to do a long Vigil for it? Mages, who have stronger access to spirits and the fade all day every day, must seem like a much larger liability. Especially if he considers them to have less 'will' than himself or his Seeker brethren.
