I played this game twice as an elf mage. Both times were really quite easy. I never lost much time researching potions and only crafted best weapons and armor for my mage only, companions only got loot. Spamming ranged attacks was quite easy.
But now I'm playing as a rogue dwarf (dual wield dagger) and it's much harder than I remember. I got my ass kicked by Crestwood's Dragon a lot of times before I could beat it, and it's supposed to be the easiest. My party initially was me, Iron Bull, Blackwall and Vivienne. But Iron Bull is just such worthless and kept dying so I switched him for Solas, but it was still hard. Vivienne died a lot while I was out of potions and I had to keep ressurecting her. I made sure none of them had electrical staves. Also, playing as melee is fucking weird. A lot of times my rogue just hit air when I tell her to use deathblow or twin fangs. It's really hard to position your rogue for flanking, especially against dragons. I was able to defeat Hinterlands' dragon with Iron Bull and with only 8 healing potions, while I had 12 against Northern Hunter.
Mages usually don't stay on the way I tell them to stay, and often I see them charging on melee. They also seem to use barrier on the most stupid times, and I've seen them sometimes not even auto-attack, just waiting for some skill to cd. Blackwall is also having serious issues in holding aggro when fighting multiple enemies, because I'm getting attacked all the time (and so are the mages), and when I switch control to him I see "Challenge" and "War Cry" are already on cooldown. I'm also having serious issues when I fight groups of red templars (on one fight, my group used over 10 potions)
I'm level 13, dunno what I'm doing wrong.

Oh, here we go. Melee hitboxes in DAI are a mess. They're all about the size of a human being, not the size of the creature you're attacking. This is no issue when you're doing ranged combat, because ranged attacks act like lock-on homing missiles anyway, but single-target melee, especially with short weapons, is no fun at all. Every hit point bar is above one hitbox. If you're not near a hit point bar when attacking in melee, you're likely not hitting the creature at all. For example, it's nearly impossible to hit a great bear from the front with daggers while the bear is on all four legs (i.e. not standing up to attack), because it has a single human sized in the middle of its body and the model is so big that you can't reach it from the front. Always position you melee rogue near a hit point bar when attacking a big creature, that way you can be sure to reach the hitbox. Ranged AI in DAI is infamous for making ranged companions run into melee range and get stomped... they just need a lot of nannying.

Go to tactics screen and make each ranged party member follow themselfs. They will stay at range most of the time. Not much, but it can help.

Damn, I used to think DA:I's combat was great when I played only a ranged character, haha. It's really hard to hit the dragon like that because he keeps moving ALL THE TIME (and it also stand on two legs from time to time, or taking the leg away to give you a tackle) And yeah, AI is really poorly done in this game. I just miss tactics when I could give automatic orders for companions in almost every possible situation. Thanks for the tips! Any tips on how to fight dragons? Which companions to take, how to use them. I'd really like to bring Iron Bull because of his comments, but it seems he's just not worth it. Unless I respec him and make him a tank, LOL.

Unless I respec him and make him a tank, LOL. Bring Sera, Cole and one mage with Static Cage; mage isn't mandatory, so you can bring Iron Bull. Select Cole and use Mark of Death, pause and then use Inquisitor Rift ability, pause and use Sera's Thousand Cuts. You can also use Cole's Hidden Blades If you bring mage, use Static Cage after Mark of Death. This can vary depending on your class and specialization. EDIT: I'm sure someone made video tutorial with almost identical tactics, will find it... Here it is. Best tactics for dragons.

As a little disclaimer before I go on, I haven't played in a while. My playthrough was on hardcore (or whatever the second highest difficulty is) with a 2H specced templar. I brought Cassandra as my tank. With some good crafted armor, she's almost impossible to kill. Sera as my ranged DPS, though Varric will do too. A mage who's good at spamming shields. (Shield set to a preferred ability) I avoided Iron Bull because he seemed to have the lowest life expectancy on the battlefield, though I think it's possible to give him some decent life regeneration options with the right build and items. I just never paid much attention to him. I mostly kept hammering away at whatever leg was closest to me while keeping an eye on the ranged companions - whenever they got too close, I switched to them and ran them to a spot further away from the dragon where they had line of sight to him. All my companions used good crafted equipment because OCD. I actually have no idea how the difficulty changes if you give them only looted items.

Can Cole be replaced by me, since I'm also a dual dagger assassin?

Can Cole be replaced by me, since I'm also a dual dagger assassin? Only if you have Assassin specialization. I you have Tempest specialization, replace Sera.
