having trouble finishing Descent, get the arms knocked down ok, but can't seem to dent the nodes. Best attack method? Best Elemental damage runes to use?

The wikia page has a strat section I think. General strat is either us all ranged attacks and avoid the arms, or use a warrior like a 2H Champion or Reaver with physical resistance to negate the arms knockdown and just pour damage into one node. Upgraded whirlwind worked great for me. DW Thousand Cuts also works great.

It's been a while since I've played this one, but I remember getting some satisfying results by unloading all my upgraded grenades against it, especially Antivan Fire. Also, Chain Lightning.

My strategy was to control Vivienne towards the outer rim, and told everyone else to attack one of the flails. You need to watch them because if left to their own tactics they will work against you. Once they have taken down the first flail have them attack the next flail in unison. Once you have 2 flails down hit the node that was between them. Electricity works well. Just repeat the same process when the boss starts up again. I originally tried controlling Varric but his shots are a bit slow and he would get smacked or sent off the edge.

I just put an archer or whoever has the range and aoes / dps at the edge of the platform where the guardian's attack cannot get them. The rest are FTDATL. I focused on that archer and a single node. It may take longer but a steady continuous attack on the node is better than constant interruptions to heal, re-position, etc.

I'll admit that for at least one of my playthroughs, I turned the difficulty, because I found the fight annoying. Micromanaging all the characters' positions was one of my main complaints about the game in general.
But on the time(s) I didn't do that, I had a champion and a knight enchanter just hacking away with their guard and/or barrier on hit abilities, while the rest of the team were pretty much dead on arrival

I always Area Effect & DOT the snot out of it. I usually bring two mages and make sure my melees are creating guard and/or heals with hits. I also use the tactics menu to place and move my people for this fight so I can focus their attacks on one node at a time. Its kind of a must to get the beasty down.

Turned out to be a rather strange fight: started out well, using level 2 focus (firestorm, rally, haste, hail of arrows?) on the arm, got it done pretty fast actually. Then started the lyrium node, and that took a looooooonnnnggg time, with several deaths along the way. As it was getting low in health, I moved over to attack the next arm. A minute of that, and all of a sudden it was over!!??????wtf What about the 2nd lyrium node? And I know I didn't really kill the 2nd arm? Was playing on casual, did have several "Trials" turned on. Not really sure what happened

Not really sure what happened The nodes are weak points, not a sequence of required mini-goals. Hit the node, do more damage than hitting the arms, but hitting the arms helps too. All you had to do was do enough damage to bring HP to 0, just like any other monster or boss.

Control a ranged character and NEVER stop moving. Attacks are telegraphed so you should easily be able to finish it with just that character.

I really enjoyed this battle, which surprised me because I don't typically like boss fights.
I sent Blackwall after one Lyrium Node and then completely ignored him. I have no idea what he did over there. Probably the same thing he always did: max out guard and resist knockdowns.
The rest of the party - two mages and an archer - I controlled manually using the tactical camera. And with them, I went after the other Lyrium Node.
Note: I have only done this battle once.
Targeting the Lyrium Node and keeping my distance worked well. I combined abilities to maximize damage (including my standard boss combo of Static Cage and Flask of Lightning), with constant adjustments to my position to avoid getting too close or grouped together. Several times I needed to revive characters during the battle. But as soon as I defeated my Node the battle was over. That surprised me. I thought there would be more to it.
