I haven't actually played the game yet, but I wondered if anyone knew about a particular bonus in the Engineer profile. The Tech Restoration and Defense modifier is worded differently than the Sentinel or Explorer's Power Restoration and Defense. Does that mean that the Engineer bonus does, in fact, only apply to Tech abilities like Energy Drain, or does the profile bonus still work on abilities like (Biotic) Charge? Or, even if the modifier was SUPPOSED to only affect Tech abilities, it maybe wasn't coded properly and functions universally?
I would like to make use of the Engineer's profile drone (as it is the only profile that essentially gains an extra ability) and create a fairly melee-centric, Biotic Engineer. It won't be terribly optimal, but I enjoy the concept. If the bonus only applies to Tech abilities, I will just settle for my Jill-of-all-Trades character to use the Vanguard profile with the Turret/Remnant VI.
Thank you fellow gamers for your time and assistance.

I think the bonus to tech only goes with tech and biotic to biotic... However that could be wrong. I know there are mods for the armors that can let you combine tech and biotic bonuses. i just basically used the explorer profile.

AFAIK, that bonus only goes towards tech. It's not going to be that restrictive though since you can use the Pathfinder Armor to get Power Restoration and Defense Bonuses and you can install mods to get even another bonus to it if you want. Mostly, you initial profile selection really only has much of an impact right at the beginning of the game. The other profiles will also unlock once you get enough skill points into other areas (I think it's 9 points) and you can switch profiles around on the fly with just a short cooldown penalty.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess that means the "Power" in Restoration and Defense on the other profiles is used to indicate Biotic or just all powers, while they were specific in the case of the Engineer. I appreciate the tip about the profiles, but I am not planning on utilizing the swap feature. If there was no cooldown penalty, or the skill trees cost less (and thus could build into a lot of different skills quickly), I might have considered it, but I prefer to build around a specific "class" instead. I suppose it's true that I could run a bunch of low level skills (in response to my own self-imposed restriction mentioned above), but I don't plan on doing a whole lot of side quests, and some of the level six perks sound nice. From what I have researched, it sounds like my Ryder will probably only reach about level 30 by endgame.

If you do decide to do those others.... Are you on PC? If so there are mods for those.

But even if you don't, energy drain+ biotic charge will basically render you immortal, anyway: you get two powers that restore shields with a primer and a detonator. If I may suggest the third power, go with incinerate. This way you get two primer/detonators (both incinerate and energy drain can be specced to do both), plus biotic charge with the 75% cooldown reduction. You'll be pretty hard to kill. If you want some extra kick, craft a piranha with vintage sink and plasma seeking augments. You'll be pretty hard to kill.

I plan on using Singularity with Charge, but I did decide to drop the extra drone in favor of Energy Drain (I'll save a drone power for my sniper Engineer, if another game is ever made). Is the Combat Tools passive tree (for melee damage boosts) a worthwhile investment for my melee-centric build? I would end up dropping Barrier down to Rank 2 instead of 6 if I took it though. Would I be able to boost my melee damage on weapon upgrades and armor attributes instead, and keep Barrier fully leveled?

I think it is, yes. However, if you really want to take barrier, you can always equip a Cryo-Gauntlet: this way even if you don't kill an enemy with melee, he is still primed for a cryo explosion that you can detonate with either energy drain or charge (and either will restore your shields).
Regardless, if you plan on only using these 3 powers anyway, soon enough you'll be able to spec both trees.
