I installed DAO Toolset and was following a youtube tutorial on changing NPC armor. It showed how to find an NPC's utc and export it to your override file. I followed the steps and a toolsetexport folder would appear in override, but it would be empty. Does this indicate a problem with the installation of Toolset? Or am I doing something wrong?

I'm not familiar with any of the video tutorials, but the file may be exporting to another directory, and IIRC, it has something to do with how you've set up your module.
Look in
\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\modules\Single Player\override\toolsetexport or \Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\AddIns\[YourModuleName]\module\override\toolsetexport

It was the first one! As to my module, I didn't really do much with it at all. Oh well... You truly are the patron saint of frustrated modders and mod users everywhere!

A quick question: how do you find the uti code for modded armor? In some of these mods, I can't find any file ending in *.uti

theskymoves A quick question: how do you find the uti code for modded armor? In some of these mods, I can't find any file ending in *.uti If it's a new item, there's a uti for it somewhere. It will generally be packaged in a ERF archive, if the mod is DAzip installed. Look in the mod-applicable folder in AddIns, and you can view/extract the contents of those ERFs with a GFF editor (or the toolset.) If it's a retexture of a vanilla item, the UTI is usually just the vanilla file.

I looked for an ERF file via Toolset and found the utis. Now here's something, after modifying a marjolaine utc that was already in override via the Improved Atmosphere mod and then putting it back in override, I now find that the symbols for half the accessories are now blanked out. I would not have thought there was any connection between the two, but it happened right after I changed the UTC. Toolset can be a dangerous thing

Perhaps it occurred because I was playing around with Toolset while the game was still on?

I think that was probably it. Dumb question; lately, the game has become prone to crashing. Too many mods? How would you know when you have too many and are overwhelming the game engine? Is there any maintenence I need to do to the DAO files to keep things running properly? As I mentioned, I change Marjolaine's gear. I had the chat with Leliana and now the ambush by Marjolaine's thugs is due. Every time the ambush triggers however, the game crashes in the middle of the fight. Surely changing the equipment on a utc wouldn't do this would it?

It's unlikely, but you may have damaged your install by running the toolset and game at the same time. You might also have garbage files left behind by the toolset or have corrupted your installation by not creating your own module.
Or you might just have one of those weird instances where a map doesn't play nice with a piece of gear... I ran into that with some mage robes from a mod, that would not allow the party camp to load from a save if anyone had them equipped.
As far as whether there's a 'too many mods'... all I know is that I've run DAO on fairly low-end computers with massive numbers of mods - a typical install for me is 75+ DAzips and 8 GB of files in the override - and I rarely CTD, other than something like the freakish and inexplicable issue with those mage robes.

As far as mod usage goes, looks like I'm piker compared to you! I only have 3.9 gigs in my override! (And to think my very first PC had only a 40 meg hard drive...) I finally mastered the art of substituting items on NPCs! Hurrah! Now for a more annoying problem....name conflicts? I have downloaded several of ladyofpayne's mods. One of her mods began replacing modded chantry outfits with Orlesian fancy dress. Her Grey Warden mod, OTOH, called up non-GW armors and robes. I assume this reflects different files having the same name. For the GW mod, at least, can I just change the name of her files so they don't conflict with other files?

Yay! Gear swaps are really simple once you know the routine... heck, even I can manage 'em!
If I understand your question corectly, you are correct, two UTI files can't have the same name. I'm not familiar with the mod in question, so I can't advise how best to address that conflict, but at the very least, renaming the UTIs will break any in-game delivery method.

I used the TikEdit program for which there was a tutorial in one of the websites you linked to. It showed how to change the localized name. I did that, but it made no difference. The GW armor didn't appear. What program would you use to change uti name?

The localized name is insignificant and almost certainly not the issue. You could load 20 mods all with an item called "Super Awesome Grey Warden Helmet" and if no other conflicts exist, they'd all show up in game and work properly.
If I needed to change a UTI file name I'd just recreate the item from scratch... no idea whether there is an easier way to approach it, sorry.
Are you certain it is actually a UTI naming conflict and not an Item Variation ID conflict? (The latter are relatively simple to fix.)

If you have a lot of mods that add new clothing/armour/weapons, I think an Item Variation conflict is more likely than a conflict with UTI nomenclature. In short, each type of item in DAO can only have ~255 variants, each identified by a unique number. Modders should try to avoid using IDs already in use, or, at the very least, notify users of known conflicts. (Some modders are more contentious than others, however.) When a Item Variation conflict occurs, the result is either 'invisible' gear (the infamous floating head) or items that use the wrong appearance/model. The more detailed information I've written on the subject is here.
