POLL Spam: With all the discussion on character quality, I though some polls would be interesting! So, what do you think of Jaal’s writing? Good, bad, ugly?

Surprisingly, a character from the most uninspiring race in the whole franchise stands behind Drack, but the competition isn't that great either.

I liked Jaal, he was interesting. The conversations about his family were good. I think he could have been used more as the stand in for the new player to explain the situation between the Milky Way races, especially with regard to the genophage. Instead he says: "I've been reading about the Genophage" and everyone else replies: "Oh, that" and the subject is pretty much dropped. More conversation could have served to explain Morda's hostility better, and also given insight into the other squadmates personalities by the opinions they had on the subject. I thought that was a wasted opportunity.
Much is made of Jaal's emotional nature, but he doesn't show it all that much. I think he could have raged more, cried more, inappropriately hugged more (would have loved to have seen him hugging Drack, or Kallo). That would have been uncomfortable, but it would have made him a bit more alien.

Jaal: Mediocre, primarily because his character is all over the place. Early on, his deep caring for the Moshae and the culture of his people is established, but when the chips are down, he's mad at Ryder for saving the Moshae over a bunch of peeps? I mean, if they were direct blood family, which is established later as a big motivator for him, okay, but I have to say his opposition to saving the Moshae in the contrived moral dilemma struck me as coming out of left field and was poorly established.

Jaal was made interesting because he was the one who provided backstory and information on Andromeda. He provided insight on customs, history and traditions of a whole new species. So I liked having around- I could hear what he had to say about a lot of new things. But that was about it. Other than being the "new" alien, he didn't really stand out to me.

That’s the character I truly did not like. The VA did not help matters. Would have traded him for Akksul...

Jaal was written above average.....his loyalty mission towards the end there was a bit of trial and error because, i did something in trying to save his life and i kinda got burned for it....but I managed to get a variety of background and decent conversations out of Jaal and he responded to immediate scenarios that might have happened after a particular mission.
Not bad.....

Not bad, but not really compelling. A problem with the whole Angara hippies.

I think he was better than most. However, his motivations during his loyalty mission were baffling, to say the least. He looks down on you because you wouldn't let an enemy shoot him? Like I said, baffling.

My problem is not with the character per se. It's the Angarans who are uninteresting and uninspired.

I think he was better than most. However, his motivations during his loyalty mission were baffling, to say the least. He looks down on you because you wouldn't let an enemy shoot him? Like I said, baffling. I think he's afraid the Roakar leader would be seen as a martar. Personally I disagree with this way of thinking, anyone who points a gun at my friend gets shot.

Jaal is my favorite of the 6. But he isn't written as well as Drack, and the Angara are lacking. Above Average.

What can I say? I had high hopes for this guy. I was hoping and expecting a scumbag with a heart of gold type of character who could stand toe to toe with Garrus as a wisecracking badass. Instead I got a weeping overly emotional alien. Disappointing at first but then I was impressed with his emotiona; range and his voice actor did a great job. He's the only guy who actually yells during battle like he means it. "DO NOT LET THEM FLANK YOU!!! " I can't trash him as much as the rest of the squad but would I like to see him again? Not really. Give me Evfraor someone like Evfra. Jaal's better as an NPC. ^This man can't be replaced.^

Jaal's writing, eh. He talks like a human masquerading as an alien, i.e. what he says comes from a human perspective and uses humanity as the standard to compare to, for example when he states that angara are such emotional people. It's the same inexpert writing that makes asari state that they are a very long lived race. Yes, compared to humans they are, but from an asari's perspective the asari life span should be normal and the human life span short. Likewise, angara should find humans detached and unemotional, compared to themselves, and not consider themselves as more emotional than normal (i.e. more than a human).
Rookie mistakes.
Overall, I voted "mediocre" - didn't impress me, didn't annoy me too much.

Overall, I voted "mediocre" - didn't impress me, didn't annoy me too much. I forgave that stuff for asari because they're also described as especially diplomatic and they have had decades to learn how to speak to humans in ways humans would understand. Well, headcanon. Not so with angara, sadly. Unless I also want to headcanon that they're especially designed by the Jaardan to be able to adjust to contact with other species very easily, in their own way (just not the easiest at the moment due to experiences with the kett).
