Mass Effect writers should stop making straight human male characters, because that's strike three. Kaidan, Jacob and Liam...

I didn't think it was possible to make a character that could be more disliked than Jacob but I was proven wrong with this one. I don't even know where to start with my dislike of Liam. My only wish is that I would have been allowed to shoot him myself.

He's like what would have happened in the OT had Jenkins survived past the first ten minutes. On the other hand, Kaidan did survive past the first ten minutes. And he's easily the Liam of the OT. Thankfully gone after Virmire - depending on your choices anyway. Same writer too. He also wrote Jacob.

Mass Effect writers should stop making straight human male characters, because that's strike three. Kaidan, Jacob and Liam... You forgot about James Vega, who......I actually kinda liked. I didn't even mind Liam, although it's easy to see why he's so widely disliked.

Subpar. Would be much lower if I didn't sympathize with what I think they were trying to go for with him. And for 'black straight male' squadmate, he's surely better written than ... ugh, Jacob.
I think there's really smart ideas with Liam, but they go 'too far' with his personality for what we otherwise know about him. How could he even get an important job acting like this, or especially be in the Initiative? How can others even deal with his personality and actions? Why is he supposed to be so damn 'acceptable' most of the time? This is not a character written to be acceptable. This is a character we are constantly tempted to smack sense into, yet we get like.. 1... 2? times to actually do so?
But look at the ratings so far. Clearly, he's not just hated (like Jacob), but divisive. There's some fantastic bits with him and there's some great lines he has... its just all in an aggravating shell. And to be clear, I'm okay and ready to be aggravated sometimes by characters. This may be a very necessary part of a larger picture.
The better things I can say is that I think Liam would have been a lot better with some more refinement, and that I actually wouldn't mind if he was in the squad in a sort of 'MEA2'. Really. Just uh, really work on him.
I find him better in my NG+. Like Sera in DAI I suppose. Same writer, I think? The dialogue is all over the place, but once you figure out the language, it can get better.

Mass Effect writers should stop making straight human male characters, because that's strike three. Kaidan, Jacob and Liam... I like Kaidan. He lacks charisma, but I found that starting to appear in ME3. Sad - it made me want to have a ME4 with a Kaidan getting rather middle-aged and wizened. I think there was something there, and it just happened that both Kaidan and Ashley, while spotlighted in the trilogy and ME3, still didn't get the dues they should have, because of a faltering start. Jacob sucks. I think they were going for more defined traits, but ended up making a sad stereotype. I'd have rather taken whatever 'character' was in Mass Effect Galaxy, than what we got. James was... uh, somethin. On one hand I resent him being there while others (Wrex, ME2 peeps) can't, and yay.. a straight male character.. but on the other hand, in the end he wasn't so bad. They seemed to know for the most part where to restrain him from being 'too much' to annoy, and there was something of a (muted) character journey there to enjoy, especially as a newbie with ME3 somehow your first game. While Jacob was a mistake, and Kaidan had mistakes, Liam is the concept of something better than all of the above, but is surrounded by mistakes. He is very symbolic of MEA in general. But even for his problems, my three companions I most pick on my main Ryder are: Jaal (Romance), Liam, and Cora. (I ignore Drack because I'm waiting to play with a friend of mine who auto-krogans, and Peebee and Vetra are.. okay, and I use them sometimes but don't gel with me as much for this journey.) So something has gone right with Liam for me to care at least a little.

It was extremely bad, the stupid lines in the initial mission didn't help from the get-go. One of the stupidest and unmemorable characters from the whole franchise, same could be said about the game. Exactly this. To date, aside from Anderson, every black squadmate has been lame as hell. Jacob was promising at first then became awkward in ME3. The next time we get a guy from London, I want him to be a pissed off cockney with an attitude problem and a dirty mouth. Fuck this guy, fuck his beliefs, fuck his car, fuck his family, fuck HU5T73, fuck his SWAT gear, fuck his imitation Tempest, fuck his limey ass accent, fuck his loyalty mission, fuck his bitch ass tantrum, fuck his jokes, fuck his peasy ass hair, fuck his Havoc Strike, fuck his omnitool gauntlets, and fuck his face.

In my first playthrough I liked him, but with each replay I care about him less and less.

I had big hopes for Liam but in the end he was just a really bland character. Like something that we've seen a dozen times before. A well-meaning idealist. Super annoying too, but I guess that's by design. Biggest problem is that you're not given enough options to confront him and force him to grow up a little or better yet kick him out of the Tempest for good. I would've love to have a big confrontation with him after the stunt he pulled with his loyalty mission. Instead there's just some light scolding and then it's back to the same old. So overall I would say he's a below average, unremarkable character.

So overall I would say he's a below average, unremarkable character. I approve. I guess in the whole game there was never given a reason why Liam is part from the Parthfinder Team. Part of the Ai, ok. But not in a Team that have to dealing with foreign species and frist contact situation. Especially, after his behavior on Habitat 7 shooting on a dead corps or his 'First shooting. Than Talking' opinion that stays in a big contrast to his actions during the rest of the game. like others I have to admit his loyality mission was very good and creative. But the dialogues has a lack of variations. Why Ryder cannot be pissed up? Why Ryder cannot throw him from the Tempest in the next stop on the Nexus? Why Ryder can give Peebee a punishment but I cannot choose a punishment for Liam? Next is his background with husl. What is husl? Why it was never mentiond in the OT? On this way it sounds like a group with people, they wanted to the military and the Alliance wanted to keep an eye on them but they should not be part of the other soldiers because of reasons. No matter. Liams shady actions should have consequences for him, when he even did not talks with the Parthfinder.
