My interest in Andromeda is growing. Can't say I'm particularly *hyped* but I'm definitely interested. I'm very much "meh" at this point. I've always a weird relationship with Mass Effect in that I feel like it's the better series, but I've just never been able to get into it as much. Maybe because, for all that it does better than Dragon Age, it still loses in the character-writing arena - which is easily the most important to me. Mass Effect just never got into the companions as much as DA does. Even ME2 - probably my favorite ME because of how much focus it gives the companions - was somewhat shallowly written and spent extremely little time actually developing these characters. Given that the only companion they've shown off thus far is Mascara Asari (Mascari?) I'm guessing the focus has probably not suddenly switched to character writing. Also something about that Asari girl rubs me the wrong way. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the "lol quirky!!!! :PPP" vibe I'm getting from her. Maybe it's the fact that I never really liked the Asari to begin with. Maybe I'm still bitter towards any Asari in the spotlight after having to put up with Liara for three games straight. I dunno. And I swear to god if they throw some bone to Garrus fans and leave Thanemancers out in the cold again I'll... probably do nothing, but I'll do nothing quite bitterly! You sound like the standard Mass Effect fan in every way, down to your opinions on "PeeBee", the new asari. That's BioWare's internal nickname for her. Had you dropped "Mascari" three months ago, it would be all over the Internet by now. As it is, she'd been dubbed Hamburglar by the BSN crowd. I'm substantially more excited than you are for Andromeda, but otherwise we share a lot of the same views. I like ME more than DA on the strength of its gameplay, but find DA's writing has more depth. Fortunately, they're both good, and between them can keep me entertained nearly indefinitely.

The only nickname I've seen for her was "Ascoon" (Asari racoon.) and that's one that I just emphatically refuse to use. Also if I seem way less excited, it's probably I generally try to keep myself off the hype train. I'd rather have terrible expectations be and surprised than be hopeful and get disappointed.

I personally refer to her as Ursa (Unnamed Raccoon Striped Asari), because Ascoon sounds vaguely racist and Hamburglar is too long.

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is struggling not to dislike her already. They keep showing her everywhere, and almost nothing of the other companions. Why they thought people would be excited to see yet another asari when ME1-3 were utterly filled with them I do not know. I have nothing against the asari, but there were SO many of them, I want to see more of some of the other species. Although I guess you could make that argument against Turians too. Then they go and tell us her nickname "peebee" which made me cringe, and tell us about her personality, which makes her sound a bit like Sera. That could go either way. In any case, I want to hear more about the other companions. They did a good job with companions in DAI, it sounds like they took lessons from that for MEA. Solas screenshot, just because I like this one.

I wonder what 'Peebee' is all about. PB? Does PB stand for something?

Solas screenshot, just because I like this one. First, that's a great pic. I talked at length a few days ago about DA, Solas and this specific scene came to mind more than once. My wife did better than usual in pretending not to be bored while I talked. As to PeeBee, she's not yet been embraced by many, so you're in the majority, I think. A big portion of the fanbase here expressed skepticism, as well as a bit of dismay at her design, and the other portion launched efforts to explain how stupid we are for not loving her and her look. Pretty much the usual. Her look continued to evolve. I don't like the 21C Earth-teenager look, but hopefully we can put her into proper gear. I've played enough of these games to know that I'll ultimately come to like her okay, even if I never love her. She doesn't seem abrasive, just annoying.

I hope it's not because they think she and Ryder go together like "PB & J", as in peanut butter and jelly. I've already played through a trilogy of their asari matchmaker simulator. I still preferred Miranda.

I'm guessing people don't like her sort of babyfaced boyish look and want their conventionally hot Asaris back. I'm just wishing for a non-baby Asari to represent her species. Did I mention that I really wished Liara had been like 500 years old instead of 'little more than a child' among her people? I don't know how most people would feel about a 500 year old space girlfriend though. Then again, plenty of people wanted Samara ...

I don't know how most people would feel about a 500 year old space girlfriend though. Then again, plenty of people wanted Samara ... I don't mind her face, since they ditched even the hint of eyebrows, and made her look less like Shrek. Her face is much more standard asari, now, while still being very unique to her. I like it just fine. She seems to have a subtle underbite that makes her look stubborn. As long as she's not Sera-stubborn, it's cool. Her outfit and the implied "spunkiness" grate on me, slightly, like they're trying too hard. Supposedly, she left "Ark Asari" (whatever its name will be) and struck out on her own. Sounds insane, but I guess she really wanted to explore. I can accept that and see how she'd be good to have on the team. Why, though, didn't she dress better for the trip? She looks like a lost child. Maybe she had a proper hardsuit and it was damaged beyond use. She needs a new one ASAP. Her child-like appearance gives me an "eww, gross" vibe when I think of her obvious status as a romance option. (Clearly, she could change my mind when I see more than a few stills of her.) I got the same creepy feeling at the idea of a Tali romance, though, and she's pretty popular. I even thought Jack was a young girl who never finished growing up. I'm probably older than many who "romanced" those characters, I guess (Late 30s), or simply have a different view. Edit: The whole forced fandom thing is also a concern, especially after Liara, and to a lesser extent other characters. Don't try to make me love your imaginary blue girlfriend, or your imaginary quarian girlfriend, or any of them. Just write the characters and let me enjoy them, or not. I probably will like them all, but forcing me will make me dislike them, like how you ruined Tali and the quarians for me. (When did I start "speaking at" BioWare in this post? About two sentences ago, it seems.) When it comes to handling characters, DA has always done significantly better, with only a few hiccups here and there.

I have to admit part of the reason I want to dislike her is simply because it feels like they're trying to shove her at us. Totally ridiculous, but it's still my impression. I'll probably end up loving her.

And I can see how people who didn't like her at all would resent her assumed closeness with Shep in ME3. I didn't quite find Liara annoying in ME1 - well, I guess it was annoying that I could and tried to be the biggest bitch to her and she was still all "You're an interesting woman, Shepard " Not to mention how low-key creepy it is that she uses the Asari equivalent of sex on you, repeatedly, in front of everyone, including your LI, without even touching on all that implies. But besides all that, I mostly just found her bland. Most of the companions were kind of bland really, except for Wrex. Liara's off-screen switch into some Illium mob boss annoyed me though. Like I don't really care about what she went through when Shepard died, changing so dramatically and doing it entirely off-screen is bad writing. The closeness also annoyed me, but by the point of ME2's reunion (Complete with creepy hug you're not allowed to opt out of) I was soured on her already. Like you, I'd be happy to never see another Asari again. Even if they have to invent some new cliche space babe race to replace them, I don't care at this point.

*Waves timidly* I don't know if anyone remember me, as I haven't been active in months.
I... I finally found this place. I took a break on DA for several months trying to get over the heartbreak (conclusion: nope, that didn't work), and when I tried to log back on the forums, everything was just GONE. Like it had never been there. The blanketfort! Where could it have gone. Fortunately, the magic of google was there to help and now, here I am, back in Solavellan hell after I started a new playthrough and quite ready for the theorycrafting and the bunny gifs.
I'm so glad this place didn't dissolve in the fade when the old bsn closed.

I actually do like Liara, kind of. She changes a lot. I first encountered her in ME2/Shadow Broker, and I thought she was lovely. Little did I know she'd be so annoying in ME1. YES. The frickin' mind-melds. And she keeps wanting to do it. I'm like, "Again? Can we not?" And you CAN'T NOT. It's not so much that I hate the Asari as that I'm frustrated by what a wasted opportunity I felt they were. I know we don't get super-deep into any of the alien cultures in ME, but I particularly felt this with them. I'd like to see them back if the writers showed any interest in their society beyond their diplomacy, love for half-naked dancing, and wanting to be girlfriends to every other species. Seeing as we'll be leaving most of Asari civilization behind in the new game, I'm not hopeful. Also, I'm always fascinated by the potential for really unique characters when you have very long-lived species. You'd think 120-year old space archaeologist like Liara would have some fascinating stories, for instance. To some extent, I have the same complaint about the Krogan, who as characters all seem to be 90% lizard-brain and 10% personality - Wrex being one of the notable exceptions.

To BioWare's credit they *did* give us plenty of notice so we could coordinate a new place to go and I believe they helped in saving old posts and such. So, welcome to Blanketfort v2.0! Also known as The Blanket-Bunker or Blanketfort II: Blanket Harder!Edit: Got another one, Blanketfort II: Elf-lectric Boogaloo...

To BioWare's credit they *did* give us plenty of notice so we could coordinate a new place to go and I believe they helped in saving old posts and such. So, welcome to Blanketfort v2.0! Thank you! Random thought coming from discussion about wolves from I don't know how many page back. I finally got where they were going with the Evanuris giving Solas the name of Fen'Harel! (Maybe I'm just a bit slow). If we consider that the wolf represents guardians of sort and Mythal is often represented with Solas/wolf at her side, guarding her, then him suddenly turning on them would make him the "traitor wolf" I think the meaning the "Harel/harellan" as rebel or standing tall might well have come later, as a consequence of the fact that he took the moniquer of traitor and wore it proudly. He really was the wolf who turned on his masters (I have a theory that Mythal was in on things at least to a point and supported the rebellion from the shadows, but that's for another post). The traitor wolf, Fen'Harel (while I suppose there were other wolves, other close guardians to the Evanuris that stayed loyal).

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is struggling not to dislike her already. Eh... I don't particularly understand the dislike for her, when she's done nothing to warrant the amount of derision she's received (thus far). Although I have to admit, PeeBee is a really weaksauce nickname and just makes me think of this guy; Devs, you should leave the fan-nicknames to the fandom. Over the years, we've come up with Ser Beefcakes, Scribbles and Dramatic Hands Moustache Guy... we're clearly better in this department than you.

I still think Peebee = PB and it stands for something.
Petite Badass? Petulant Bandit? Parasitic Bioform? Perky Butt?

I still think Peebee = PB and it stands for something. Petite Badass? Petulant Bandit? Parasitic Bioform? Perky Butt? IDK. Pretty sure they spelled it out as Peebee in one of the tweets, but I don't feel like searching for it. That thread moves fast. Edit: Ok wait, I see what you're saying. Slow brain day. Peebee = PB like Ceetwo = C2. That could be it. Seeing PB makes me think of peanut butter though. Just peanut butter.
