This thread has been pretty quiet the last few days, so I thought of a subject that might be fun to share. Seeing the general discussion thread on Dragon Age Confessions, what are you Solas/Lavellan/Solavellan related Dragon Age Confession? I'll start: - I can't play any female Lavellan apart from my canon rogue archer Ellana. I just can't. I try, but it feels like cheating on Solas, even if I didn't plan on romancing Solas in the first place.
- Which means I've replayed my canon three times now, making the same decisions (apart from one or two) each time! I can't stop!
- Ellana Lavellan is the worse Mary Sue I've ever created... with a good helping of snark. Seriously, anyone she could save she did. Alexius is researching magic, Florianne is seeing if peasant life is for her, Samson is being looked over by Cullen. She let the Wardens stay. She'll save Solas come what may. There's no one she doesn't think shouldn't have a second chance. Well, apart from Erimond, but fuck that mofo. The Wardens can have him back for punishment.
- I still haven't decided of my Lavellan prefers Cole more human or more spirits. Both offers very nice rp moments to me.
- Although I get super emotionnal at Trespasser, to my great surprise, I haven't cried at the end either time I've played it. I'm actually feeling... hopeful? The cat's out of the bag so now my Lavellan can plan her next move.
And of course I will answer these! Who doesn't love sharing their Inquisition adventures? I'm just going to go off of yours though! I couldn't play another female or male Lavellan mage, because my headcanon has all my Inquisitors existing, just not becoming the Inquisitor (like in Origins). So, obviously there'd only be one Lavellan Clan First. I won't play another female Lavellan because she isn't in the plan of future play throughs, but even if I did I would never romance Solas with another character. My Ithilia Lavellan is his heart... I dunno what the rest of your Lavellan's are doing trying to claim her man! I've restarted my canon three times now. Once for a new chin, once to upgrade to the Xbox One, and once after I lost my Xbox One copy and rebought the digital copy with all the add-ons. My first play throughs of BioWare games tend to be the Mary Suest. I like being nice! And what's wrong with saving everyone xD? It's not until later play throughs that I start giving my characters actual personalities and their own initiative! I was just discussing the Cole dilemma on the Anders thread. I say more human because I'm a human supremacist and for some odd reason I just find being a human the best ever but my Lavellan is less sure about her more human Cole decision (not that it should have been her decision anyway). Did I cry... hmmmm, I cry really easily when I'm watching/reading/hearing about something sad, so probably, but I was so focused on Lavellan and Solas angst that I don't recall my reaction, just hers... *sobs* I'm worried, but I'm not... I think what I'm afraid of is the relationship, romantic or no, not mattering much in the next game with a new protagonist. And to add another thought; the above picture of Solas worrying over Lavellan's youth, while amusing, did have me thinking. As it's a video game, set in a fantasy world, I smother my real life sensibilities involving relationships. However, 20 year old Lavellan, at least for me, seems too young for 40 year old bodied and thousands of years old soul Solas. I know, I sound like that judge-y family member. And my Lavellan is young herself (24-25) and before I started playing Inquisition I never would have imagined I'd be happily playing through a romance with such an age gap (seeing Solas as Lavellan would-- 40 some and not thousands of somes), but there it is! I actually aged her up partially for Solas and because I think it makes more sense for people taking her seriously if she's older and more experienced. I like playing characters close to my age, if I think it makes story sense.

Let's see...confessions... 1: I had pre-ordered DA:I and my first playthrough was a Lavellan. I do not remember her name, I just know she had red hair. 2: I always play an elf when I can. My ex used to call me a tree hugger. :-P 3: I really only have 1 complete playthrough, including all DLC. Right after I finished my first Lavellan I made a Trevelyan and romanced Cullen. I then made another Lavellan which was Atisha, my cannon. I finished her and then found out we couldn't get any more DLC for the XBox 360. So, I went and bought myself a brand new gaming computer pretty much just so I could play Trespasser. :-P I remade Atisha, added some really spiffy mods and finally finished. I cried, a lot. 4: I made another Trevelyan with mods and made her really pretty, but I just can't get into her. I also made a female Qunari (I can't remember her name right now) that I can't get into. Every time I see Solas I want to romance him. 5: I also have the problem with making a new Lavellan and romancing Solas. To me, it is like he is cheating on Atisha when I try. 6: I am addicted to Dragon Age art. I just love sharing art with you all. Whenever someone likes my art posts I get all giddy. I'm silly, I know. 7: I really want to play a male character and romance Dorian, but I just can't do it. I don't like playing male characters unless I have to. 8: I finally finished reading "Asunder" a couple days ago. Poor Cole. 9: I really dislike Blackwall's beard. I got one of the mods that removes his beard and he is just so handsome without all that fuzz. I played the game for about an hour before I just had to delete the mod. He's just not Blackwall without that stupid beard!

NeverlandHunterSo neat! I'm doing that too! Except I crafted a situation where two Lavellans make sense. The Dalish are so long lived, so the Keeper is 60s, the Lavellan secret "first" meant for Solas is 40s with two kids. She's been a pretty mobile spy for most of her life, with her fingertips brushing if not outright gripping onto some of the major events of the series. One of her kids, a 22 yr old FEM mage meant for Cullen, is the on-the-books "First." She was to follow in mother's footsteps as a spy mage with the Conclave her first serious, yet still relatively safe, assignment. So, kid Lavellan gets the green glowing hand while mama is on business in Orlais. I like the Lavellan with Solas being older. I wasn't in a romance with Solas when Trespasser hit. I was with Cullen. I think I was tearing up in the office a bit thinking the anchor would eat me and everyone around me acting like I was about to die. I just remember the talk with Solas, and all I was thinking is, "I want to live. I want a happy ending with Cullen, I just got married!. I'm dying, whyyyyy---" then, course I didn't. Big relief. A Solasmance will get my angst feels going, but tears? Nah. DA2 is the only game of the three to get me making water.

Confession: The only way I could create a lady elf and not romance Solas is to make her a mage.
I laughed my ass off when Solas brought up Bull's betrayal the first time I played Trespasser.

NeverlandHunterUnfortunately, due to the approval system, you have to be somewhat Mary Suish in order to get all the content and appreciate all the companions. Basically not having a spine. Its one of the reason why I'm against the system. My first play through was a bi different since I let Celene die and told Leliana to kill the sister. I had Cole become human the first time and then a spirit the second time. The first time, I chose it because working through the pain and dealing with it seemed healthier for him. I didn't at all think about the implication that this would make him more human. The second time, I felt that this was not his pain, but the pain of the boy who died. He shouldn't carry this burden. I felt like making him human was more of making him assume the identity of the boy who died rather then be who he was. So for that, I prefer to make him spirit. Also, I remember a post on the old forum where someone said that they turned him spirit because it shows the Inquisitor is willing to accept Cole for what he is. The Inquisitor is meeting Cole half way in relationship, rather then making him do all the work. I'm not really bothered by the age difference. This is the medieval times where if you were a teenager you were considered a young adult. Speaking of age, what did everyone put for the Inquisitor's age? Mine was in their mid 20s, Surana!Lavellan would be in her early 30s by the time DA:I takes place.

Age is meaningless. It's all about the mind. I have three Solasmancing Lavellans ages 24-27, 36-39, and 37-40.

Another confession.
I kind of enjoy the angst and I make up little stories to give it even more angst. Like, if Solas plans work and it kills all the modern elves but Lavellan, that Solas would bring an unconscious Lavellan to his base of operations to heal her wounds. When he goes to check up on her, after much time to prep himself, she's gone. She escaped by turning into a rat, escapes to the Korcari Wilds and goes deeper and deeper into it until she pretty much left known Thedas. He searches for her in the Fade, but can't find her as she hides in the fade and the real world as a rat. So small and that she escapes notice.

Mine was in their mid 20s, Surana!Lavellan would be in her early 30s by the time DA:I takes place. My Inquisitior Ellana is 27 at the start of the game, 30 by the time it ends. Young enough to still be optimistic about the world and its people, but not so much so that she lacks experience. Making her any younger would have squeaked me out with the age difference with Solas (appearing to be 40 or so in my mind), so I thought it was a good age. For Cole, I like the justification for both making him more Spirit, or more human. As you say, making him a spirit shows the Inquisitor can accept him as he is and that Spirits have a place by her side. But, it always breaks my heart a little when we get to the bit where Cole rejects his identity as Cole and just looks... cold in that dialogue. On the other hand, I also like the justification to make him human. As Varric said, Cole seemed to want to be more human. Making him human shows that there is hope in the future, in moving forward no matter what. It's also a good lesson for our favorite stubborn egghead. And finally, the fact my Lavellan is such a Mary Sue is a feature, not a bug. I made her that way as a foil for Solas' grim and fatalistic outlook. She clings to the thoughts that her world is redeemable, and becomes a beacon of hope to her friends because of that. Frankly, I love her

Okay, confession time it is... - I refuse to romance Solas with anyone but my canon Lavellan. - My canon Lavellan is the first character I made in a Bioware game that started out being a bit racist (she really disliked "shems") but during the events of the game she grew and got a very different viewpoint. Was a very interesting new experience for me as a player. - My Lavellan totally rode the Bull before she committed to Solas. Why? Because she was an incorrigible flirt and very curious! - Choosing Solas as my romance was never clear cut; I really liked Cullen too, and he felt like a very "safe" option. I debated with myself back and forth for quite a while, but decided that Cullen was similar to Alistair (my romance in DA:O) and I wanted something different. Also, Solas kisses were way hotter. - I plan on romancing every single romance character in DAI. There has to be an achievement for that, right? - I actually started writing my second master's thesis (the first one was within the field of history didactic, this would be within the regular history course) with Dragon Age in mind, however life got in the way and I had to leave it very much unfinished. Maybe one day!

In Lavellan's case, I think they went more for "proudly dalish" than racist, which I suppose makes some sense as a purely racist/isolationist Lavellan wouldn't have been the person chosen to spy on human politics. It's too bad about the rp opportunities, but perhaps it was too sensitive to have truly racists options, seeing how elves are already despise by some? I still love ticking Solas off about the Dalish though *shifty eyes*.

(Checks link) God, of course it's Dalish-ious I don't like Solas with dreads, but mainly because I don't like dreads in general. I also hate that hipster sidecut thing (Especially when paired with long hair), so like 99% of the "Solas with hair" art is utterly unappealing to me. Thank God BioWare went bald. Oh right, confessions. Uhm, well... 1. My Lavellan's 34, but I don't mind fic with a large age gap between Lavellan and Solas. Unless it's starts getting fetishistic. 2. I severely dislike DAI Leliana. Off-screen character development pisses me off, and it pisses me off even more that her development just made her ten times angstier. I honestly wish they had just replaced her with a new character entirely. 3. I spent the first half of my first play through deliberating between Solas or Cullen. After the Fade kiss, I reloaded, went to go see Cullen's kiss scene, and then realized that I just generally found him pretty boring and bland, especially in comparison. After that it was all aboard the USS Solavellan. 4. I wasn't particularly devastated or even surprised by the revelations of Trespasser. I mean, the specifics were a surprise, but with all the villain-coding going on with Solas in the base game, I was already expecting him to be the next antagonist. Which of course meant no happy ending. My primary thought after finishing Trespasser was "Well shit, if they internet didn't hate him before, they probably will now." 5. I spent maybe fifteen minutes in character creation. :\ I guess I can understand why people would spend upwards of an hour, but I pretty much took one of the defaults, changed the hair, and called it a day. 6. But I also don't "plan out" my PCs. Mainly I just play the game, and then develop their story/personality.

So I don't really think that they've 'fixed' her, the same way they didn't help 'fix' redeemed Blackwall. They simply made their difference between what was at the start of the game and what was at the end more prominent.

It made me think my Inquisitor really did have an influence in his life, but that at the same time he was commited in repairing his mistake in a good way. Now, if only a certain old elvhen "god" could use that as his inspiration instead of trying to end the world as we know it *rolls eyes*.

She didn't seem to change at all by the end of the Inquisition and then suddenly grew in Trespasser. I thought that her whole shtick was more of to show that some people don't change and that the reason why she changed was because of the backlash she got from fans. edit: The difference between Blackwall and Sera is that I felt he was trying to fix his mistakes and wanted to be a better person. With Sera, it didn't seem like she gave a crap about seeing another point of view, or getting over her own elfy issues.

Her whole shtick was that if Inquisitor befriends her, he/she helps her grow (in many ways it's like that for every character, but more literal for her). So I don't really think that they've 'fixed' her, the same way they didn't help 'fix' redeemed Blackwall. They simply made their difference between what was at the start of the game and what was at the end more prominent. I wish we got to see that growth. It does feel like they have missed an opportunity to show at least the start of Sera's growth before the end of the base game. It was really jarring how she mocked Lavellan for losing her vallaslin that late in the game, and that even when you are friend with her. I understand some of her reactions are self defense, but both that and the fact she'll break up with a Lavellan that refuses to turn away from her own culture and religion leave a sour taste in my mouth (and it took me quite a while to warm up to her character in general). It would have been nice if she'd shown at least a little bit of an open mind before Trespasser.

Uh, the whole point of 'roof scene' was her coming out of her shell and learning/accepting some things - literally. She even says so herself ("suppose it's not really about them... I hate learning lessons"). Sera does so in her peculiar way, but she does it. (speaking of rooftop scene, it strikes ma that I find yet another similarity between Sera and Solas - Sera expected rejection outright, to a point where she doesn't register at first that Inquisitor accepted her 'symbolic cookies baking' and starts going on a tangent on how stupid that idea is. I don't really think she even knew at this point how it is to be fully accepted, by pretty much anybody :/... All she ever received was rejection or acceptance with a large caveat, it seems)

I just felt like she really didn't change by how she reacts to Lavellan if she is romancing them after the Temple of Mythal. If anything, it felt like Sera regressed even more.

I just felt like she really didn't change by how she reacts to Lavellan if she is romancing them after the Temple of Mythal. If anything, it felt like Sera regressed even more. Regressed? Even more? When she joined the Inquisition she could hardly speak with an elf, much less a Dalish one. She can end up befriending or even loving one. That's hardly 'regress'. Also - you have to keep in mind what you're working with. Some people need more time with change than others - doesn't mean that the change isn't in effect. Even the fact that Sera took Inky on that rooftop is a significant indicator of change. Don't forget that prior to that Sera won't even tell Inquisitor where she's from and evades pretty much all of questions about her past. She detests self-reflection and doesn't want to dwell on it, but she gives it a try with a person she trusts. For her it was important step - but you can't expect for her to change outright. Hence her reactions, like those after ToM. I can't say I hate that. It's more realistic that way. Inky will help their friends grow, but some of that change will take time.

I agree that the cookie scene showed growth (I will say though that I didn't get that far in my friendship with Sera to get it on my first run of my Lavellan, although they were friendly). She finally opens up and shows a willingness to question herself that didn't use to be there. I'm glad she continued to grow up during the two years before Trespasser. Still, I'm sore on the Vallasin comment. It seemed really crude after that friendship scene. But, perhaps it's not so much a weakness of Sera's character writing so much as a strength. She doesn't get molded by our PC. In the end, she needs the time and space to deal with her issues and getting pushed and pulled by all the revelations brought by Corypheus isn't the right time for it.

CapricornSunThat older Lavellan Artwork reminded me of this thought. What if Solas waited for his Veil tearing until all his friends/lovers were dead? He'd only be delaying like 80 years, a blip considering the 1000-4000 years old he's slept.

Our poor Lavellan, growing old and dying without ever getting closure. That would suck.
