Speaking of boss battle debates ... I've been playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I've never played Human Revolution but I hear it has the same thing ... anyway, certain situations can be won completely non-violently by having a debate. I think this sort of mechanic is fairly interesting although in Deus Ex you're not really paying attention to what the people are saying, you're paying attention to your social analysis augment that basically tells you which option to pick. It's actually pretty refreshing to NOT have to kill people. Not that I think we'll be able to just TALK Solas down. But it would be interesting. I've played Human Revolution (Haven't got a chance to try out MD yet.) and yeah they have the same mechanic - flaws and all. It is an interesting idea, but when you play like me and dump all your praxis points into stealth augs, there isn't a social augmentation to check. So the battles basically became a case of me randomly guessing, which made both the victories and the losses feel inexplicable and unearned. The win scenario for the last battle is one I literally stumbled into on the first try. I figured it was just scripted for you to win, until i found out later it was supposed to be the hardest social debate in the game. But I've seen people put forth the idea that this was basically what Trespasser did. The final "battle" of the game wasn't with the Qunari, it was with Solas. He's simply more inclined to talk than to fight. It's a cute idea, but not one I really buy, since it assumes that having high-approval is the "win" condition, which sort of ignores the fact that getting low-approval with Solas could be the result of role-playing choices and not total failure. Still, I guess we can consider it a prototype if they decide to go in that direction. But the end of Trespasser wasn't even a debate. You could ask questions, Solas would tell you some things. But that's it. There was no argument or discussion, no presenting of ideas. You weren't even given the option of trying to change his mind. It was pretty much just a set up for the next game. So I agree, I don't buy it either.

To everyone: if it is true, what reason IS there to oppose Solas? Because he WONT SIT DOWN WITH US TO LOOK FOR A LESS WORSE WAY TO GET IT DONE, TOGETHER, WITH MORE BRAINS THAN JUST HIS, BY ITSELF, ALONE AND SULKING (he got his agents but I doubt he consults them somehow) *throws chair*

I'm on the side of trying to convince him of a better way, whatever that may entail. I don't really know either way since I always play on instinct. (In the spirit of roleplay.) But if Thedas were on the verge of something big regardless, the next protag or Inquisitor wouldn't be aware of it unless we play another Warden and a Blight is coming. I have been playing DA:O again and someone mentioned how, if the old gods are killed, the Darkspawn would have nowhere to go but up and it would be an unending blight.. So that's something to think about. And then there is all the foreshadowing with the Titans.. Now I'm rambling.. Is DA4 out yet?

To those of you who oppose Solas at the moment from what we know: if that theory is true, would it tip you the other way? To everyone: if it is true, what reason IS there to oppose Solas? Because he didn't put out! OR.. because I really don't believe in his plan of tearing down the Veil and still being able to keep Evanuris in their prison, considering his gamble with Corypheus. It will come back to bite him in the butt, only instead of the protagonist dealing with one misguided deity, s/he'll have an entire pantheon and one or two Archdemons just for the hell of it. Plus, the whole genocide thing. Besides, does he faction in the spirits? If tearing down the Veil is such a cataclysmic event, the spirits he loves so much (much more than things that breathe, it seems) will suffer as well from the massive pain felt by the entire world. Might be wrong there though. What's the most popular current theory on exactly how he'll reshape the world? Letting the People out or server roll-back? Edit: obligatory top of the page Solas, as informed by Solas:

One of the most annoying responses from Solas for me was if you are a friend and choose the "let me help you" elven icon. Now I wasn't offering to help destroy the world, just stay on side with him because it is much easier reasoning with someone in the same room than across the other side of the world without any means of contact. His response was that there is no glory in what he is trying to do. I wasn't after elven glory but I would very much like to improve the lot of all elves across Thedas. My Lavellan wouldn't ask for any credit in achieving this, just the satisfaction of having done so. It is so frustrating thinking of all the good Solas could do for modern elves if he would just embrace them as his people. As Briala proved, just having the eluvians made a huge difference to what she could accomplish. So if Solas' plan was to change the current social order, without destroying the world in the process, I would be backing him all the way.
Let's face it, if his distress at finding the world on awakening was entirely due to the political set up, his determination to change things would be more understandable. To be honest, based off his conversations in the main game with companions I had thought that was his intent. Apart from Rivain and the fringe societies like the Avaar and the Dalish, the set up in the majority of Thedas is bad for anyone who isn't nobility but particularly the elves:
Tevinter run by a ruling elite of mages (Evanuris) and utterly dependent on its slave workforce to keep it from collapse. The elite are hypocrites who totally ignore the moral guidelines of their religion and their own laws against the use of blood magic. They believe that their magic is a gift from their god and this gives them the divine right to rule. Elves are particularly abused under this system because of the potency of their blood in magical spells. Even so, elves are often worse off free and in the slums than if kept as slaves.
Orlais run by a ruling elite of non mages, reinforced by their elite army of Chevaliers. All the nobility indulge in the Grand Game, in which innocent servants and peasants constantly suffer along with the nobility. This is in direct contradiction of the moral guidelines of their religion. Nevertheless they believe that they have their social position by the gift of their god, which gives them the divine right to rule and treat commoners as they please. Elves particularly suffer under this system because of the Chantry propaganda against them, historic prejudice and the nobility being able to kill them on a whim or as target practice, with no possibility of justice. Elves need special permission to leave the alienage.
Ferelden where, so far as I am aware, the law is still that it is an offence to kill someone in defence of an elf. Elves can still not move around freely but require special permission to move from one alienage to another.
Antiva run by the Crows, who decide who lives and dies and if one of their targets owes them money, will force their widow/family into prostitution to pay off their debts, even though they were the ones responsible for the debtor's death. Elves are particular targets because of how attractive humans find them and thus how useful they are to the organisation.
Nevarra is not that different from anywhere else with regard to the distain the nobility have for commoners and the morality of their own religion. They still have alienages run in much the same way as everywhere else.
Ditto the Freemarches. Remember elves generally find their treatment so bad, this is why they are easy recruitment targets for the Qun. Other non elven commoners do not have it that good, whilst the nobles are indolent and self serving.
The Anderfels: The First Warden is now more concerned with politics and gaining power than saving the locals from darkspawn.
Seheron. Basically this is the equivalent of Vietnam in the bad old days. Two superpowers fighting over a relatively small country while the locals are stuck in the middle constantly suffering or fighting a guerrilla warfare.
Par Vollen: The Qun - enough said.
Orzammar: Dwarven caste system where if you are castless then you are condemned to a life of poverty or crime. Much of the Deep Roads is lost to darkspawn hordes.
Really if Solas could magically make all the corrupt ruling elite disappear without harming the ordinary folk, I'd be all for it. If he could solve the problem of the darkspawn, that would be even better. I'd settle for something along the lines of what they did with the mages though. By the end of Trespasser, no matter what you chose, there is an independent College of Enchanters and the Loyalist Circle. So a free elven state, which can be a refuge, without being totally hostile to the outside world, would be ideal. Don't think that is what Solas has in mind though.

OT: yknow The theory that floats around that says current Thedas is doomed for xyz reasons ex. encroaching blight. If true, it makes Solas' plans seem more sympathetic I guess. To those of you who oppose Solas at the moment from what we know: if that theory is true, would it tip you the other way? To everyone: if it is true, what reason IS there to oppose Solas? I've said it before and I still believe it - I can't really pass judgement, good or bad, on Solas' plans until I get the full picture. It baffles me that so many seem quick to pass judgement on his plans and/or motivations when we still don't really know what they are. If it turns out Thedas is doomed if Solas doesn't do what he wants to, then I think the option is clear. The Veil's gotta go down - it sucks, but it beats everything being dead forever. Although there is the "We'll find a better way!" theory, but personally I think that's naive and blindly optimistic. Like jumping off a roof because you believe you will fly - you can insist on that all you want, but it's not going to stop gravity from smashing you against the ground if you're wrong. But I think the situation's a bit more morally complex that "Solas is wrong, we've got to kill him" or "Solas is right, the world will die if we do nothing." There are two motivations for Solas that I think are most likely. One, he's doing this because he wants to restore elves to immortality/ magic to the world, and to all the creatures that rely on it. Morally complicated because, while this would undoubtedly improve the situation for the elves, mages, and spirits, it would kill literally everyone else. Is it alright to tear the Veil down, and kill millions of people, uproot entire societies? Or is it better to leave it up, and condemn elves to extinction, spirits to corruption, mages to enslavement? Or, there's motivation theory number 2 - that when the Veil went up, it trapped ancient elves in Uthenera, and those same elves not only continue to live, they're presumably trapped in eternal torment. Again, the situation is morally complex. Tear the veil down and free them, at the cost of every one else? Or leave it, and condemn them to an eternity of suffering while you and yours live it up in (relative) peace? I suppose those two theories might overlap as well, or another might arise, but I feel like that's the general "point" that Solas' arc is going to end up at. There's no right or wrong answer. There's no definitive "Solas is right/Solas is wrong." It's a complicated situation, and someone gets screwed over no matter what. Right now, though, a lot of people seem to be in the "Solas is wrong" camp, and I can't blame them because Trespasser does leave you with the feeling that Solas' plan is all bad and has no redeeming qualities. But I don't think it's going to stay that way. Well, you could argue that the entire game was this "debate" and the conversation at the end of Trespasser was the culmination, where Solas either admits defeat ("I was wrong to dismiss you and your people.") or maintains his beliefs. ("Mortals suck and your world is absolutely an acceptable cost to my plans.")
