Tbh it could just be a simple case that they didn't want to assume which vallaslin to put on the default Inquisitor and so chose none as the simplest default.

I admit, i always hated that only fem Lavellan who romanced Solas could remove her vallaslin. So i'm glad that Bio gave an option to other Lavellans too. He did a two for one when he removed the anchor: "You're welcome". He secretly enjoyed doing that to a hostile Lavellan but it only became apparent over time as it faded gradually. Also, it is possible that it is an option in the CC for the Inquisitor but may be it was blocked off for some reason. All the Inquisitors I have seen so far have looked the same and I thought they never got beyond that first screen. It surprised me when I saw the romance screen as well. Tbh it could just be a simple case that they didn't want to assume which vallaslin to put on the default Inquisitor and so chose none as the simplest default. This is what I understood about what they were shown of the Inquisitor. They were just offered a default one and weren't actually allowed to see more than that. That's why the romance screen being shown really surprised me.

it's not necessarily a retcon. It's been 10 yesrs since Inquisition and Inky might've simpy found a way to remove vallaslin without Solas. Like I said, it's whatever. I feel like it cheapens that scene and takes away something that was specifically Solavellan, but that's a me thing. I fully agree that it cheapens the scene. But more realistically, I think they decided not to bother with creating a different version of CC for Inquisitor and just reused one from the Rook, where vallaslin wasn't a must. This still allows you to alter appearance of Inq in whatever way you desire; you don't have to create additional scripting (if elf then force vallaslin -> is solas is romanced, do a check if Lavellan decided to keep/remove it -> lock/unlock tattoo option in CC). Some people theorised Solas was retconned to be bi, as we can see male Lavellan without tattoos. To me that's a stretch (at least I hope so, as I really dislike retconning established sexualiies without supporting it in the actual game). Still, I assume you can create masculine-looking Lavellan with new CC. Plus, Weekes once said this spell of Solas is simple tattoo removal one and could be learned by any mage.

Some people theorised Solas was retconned to be bi, as we can see male Lavellan without tattoos. It appears both Dorian and Cass are unavailable to female inkys so if they DID retcon Solas to be bi, he would be the only one, so I don't believe that's the case. Thank goodness.

I wouldn't care so much if he was retconned to be bi; if Lavellan transitioned between games I think he'd still love them for their spirit/soul. I don't necessarily think they'd do that though, since it could be just another thing they'd have to write and record dialogue for.
Which is another reason I'm slightly apprehensive about the vallaslin thing: if it was unique to a Solavellan Inquisitor, I'd think there could be a comment by a Dalish Rook/Davrin/Bellara about it. But if it's for any Lavellan, I think it truly will just be aesthetic and nobody will comment on it. Because to do that, there would have to be a canon explanation for why/how a non-solasmance Lavellan got their vallaslin removed in the past 8 years. I don't see the devs spending resources on that.
Edit: also, just because anyone could learn the spell doesn't mean it's common knowledge.
Anyway, I don't mean to be grumpy. I'm incredibly grateful that some of the devs care about Solavellan at all, and I know I shouldn't get greedy.

Respectfully, still loving a person who transitioned between DAI and DAV and allowing to select male Lavellan as Solas's love interest in DAV is different things. After Jaal I became too salty about those kind of things I think we all may still be mistaken - what if that screen is WIP and final version will have different setup of presets? Who knows

I wouldn't mind if it turned out Solas was bi, because that was originally the plan and then it got cut for reasons I don't remember. There are even voice lines left in.

Not exactly, he was always planned to be straight: Solas romance was pitched for female elves only. In fact Weekes confirmed it by saying they wanted to avoid depraved bisexual trope.

My understanding was they axed it because they were worried about the depraved bisexual trope. Which is silly imo, since there really isn't anything "depraved" about Solas, but whatever.

I think its just an oversight and they'll fix it at launch, personally. Either that or the real reason is that removing the transparency sliders on the tattoos and several tattoo options from the list in the CC if a choice is triggered is just too difficult for some reason. In which case, our canon compliance will just have to be in our own hands and, if we make a wonky Inquisitor, we can make up a backstory to justify it. I'm just glad they didn't make the option just turn off tattoos, as my own Inquisitor kept hers. Also, I could easily see Lavellans who had theirs removed getting replacements, maybe even non-elven ones, which could be a really interesting "What my girl did in the past ten years." bit of visual storytelling for people.

Halp! I'm trapped! I can't get out of his eyes! The eyes are the windows of the soul. "No sign of age was upon them, unless it was in the depth of their eyes; for these were keen as lances in the starlight, and yet profound, the wells of deep memory". (Tolkien's description of Galadriel and Celeborn in Fellowship of the Ring)

Any mention of the Forgotten Ones? You know that other group of Elven Gods that Solas tricked/betrayed? I really wouldn't be surprised if we saw them (who knows - maybe we already saw them, we just didn't know it was them), considering that they were characterized as opposition to Evanuris*, but it's probably one of these things they don't want to spoil. * (IMO these are potentially any challengers of Evanuris on which they enacted, or tried to enact, the process similar to damnatio memoriae - only in ancient Thedas it's likely a process that can be much more literal. It's also why the Dread Wolf has been known as the Forgotten One - because they either began the process, or didn't succeed with it)

Hmm, I was watching the early encounter with Solas because basically I've given up where spoilers are concerned. A mention of blood magic had me curious: In the confrontation with Rook they seemed to imply that Solas used blood magic on them because of how he explained the blood had made the connection. Then Solas was indignant and said he abhorred blood magic. So, was he once again using equivocation rather than simply lying to Rook? I distinctly remember my conversation with him in DAI when he said that blood magic was no worse than any other type of magic and it was just down to the individual user. However, he didn't use it personally because it interfered with his connection to the Fade. Has he changed his stance on this or is he allowing Rook to believe he is against blood magic when really he is only against using it himself for the reason already given? Clearly, if the gods are using blood magic then they don't need to rely on the Fade for their power. If they are drawing their power from the Blight that is definitely the case because it was stated in Last Flight that the Arch-demon was not using Fade magic and blood mages don't draw from the Fade either. Perhaps the way to defeat them will be to shut off their connection to their alternative source of power, although given the prevalence of red lyrium that is not going to be easy. However, I have a vague theory that is where Kal-Sharok and the Titans are going to come into play (Act 2 or 3 most probably)

I will temper my excitement after what Epler said. What did he say? T_T on Inqy involvement? You posted the comment here a few days ago. Inky is "not playable." Until they officially confirm otherwise, I have to assume that means an untouchable NPC. No dialogue choices or anything. Perhaps this article will clarify things.

Excerpts from IGN article (not spoilery) “When we ended Trespasser, we felt that we were making a promise, a commitment to our fans of, ‘This is the story we're going to tell. This is where we want to go with it,’” Epler says. “There were different versions of the story. There were versions of the story where maybe you didn't necessarily progress as far in your fight against Solas, but Solas has always been at the center of Dragon Age 4’s story.” “Solas wasn't always the character he is now. Thousands of years ago, he was a rebel,” Epler says. “He was the kind of person who stood up for the little guy. He still has a tremendous love for spirits who he sees as these beings that are being unfairly treated, unfairly maligned. So Rook became this character that we could explore some aspects of Solas' personality but also give you a protagonist that, because it's a BioWare game, you can shape to a large degree.” “But [they’ll have] some very interesting contributions, given their history, their relationship with Solas, which can be quite complicated as a Solavellan player,” she says. “And don't judge me too hard, but as a Solavellan player, you know how complex that relationship between the Inquisitor and Solas could be. That is something we needed to pay off, and I'm happy to say, I think we did.” “Whether you're Solavellan and you've romanced Solas, or even just any other Inquisitor, you journeyed with Solas for quite some time,” he says. “And I'd say the Inquisitor, to some degree, feels guilty or responsible for what Solas is doing to the world. So while we're not going to get too far into details about what role they may play, they absolutely are somebody who is going to be interested and invested in the outcome of Rook's journey in The Veilguard.” Oh, and DAV won't retcon anything related to sexualities, established in DAI (yay) "Those decisions are: who your Inquisitor romanced (with the options gender- and lineage-locked in the same way that they were in Inquisition), whether or not you disbanded the Inquisition, and whether you vowed to stop Solas or save him."

Another angle of Solas with hair. I think it's growing on me I like the style immensely, it's the color that's taking me a bit to adjust to. Perhaps there will be mods to darken it a bit. Or maybe I'll get used to it and it will not matter.
