The market for huge open world space oriented games is wide open and game companies know this. There are just so many lone sword/shield hero slay dragon fantasy story line to go around.
Highly anticipated titles upcoming this year and next. Bethesda...Starfield. Chris Roberts...Star Citizen of whom raked in over 100 million on kickstarter, LOL! Then we have cyberpunk 2077 from the team of Witcher 3 due out in 2018.

Sadly, we have nothing remotely similar to Mass Effect. There's nothing imminent, nor even on the horizon.

I guess the game that actually gives me the most shi-fi story driven feeling is actually Detroit: Become human, but that's all the similarity I can see with ME. This year there are (possibile) be a good number of games I'm interested in, but none are in any way Mass Effect - like.

There are no space games like mass effect coming out and those are the type of space games I want.
I don't want to fly around in a ship the whole game, do nothing but ship battles in space, or just explore planets with no real story. That's about all they come out with these days.
Mass Effect was the golden child and they went and killed it off because EA are assholes who decided that it needed to be rushed out the door by the second stringers at bioware. Le sigh.
However, I will have to look up this starfield game by bethesda that you mention because I haven't actually heard about that one.

Sadly, we have nothing remotely similar to Mass Effect. There's nothing imminent, nor even on the horizon. And that’s pretty damn sad. At the very least we could have gotten more singleplayer-focused Star Wars games, and yet here we are. I don’t really find myself playing many different things, and to be honest, games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect spoiled me rotten. I have TW3 and Fallout 4 to keep me busy on occasion, but I really yearn for another proper space opera game.

I have found myself the last number of years losing interest in new games since publishers and developers are more interested in following "market trends" than creating amazing and immersive experiences. I could care less about "shared spaces" and "live services". I just want a game that gives me a world I can get so immersed and lost in that it feels real.

My ps4 library is far less smaller than my ps3 library which released mid- to B level games like "Spec Ops the line" "Vanquish"....Remember Me".....i'm just saying we had mid level B - C games that was half way decent.....Now there is no mid level...it is either AAA social garbage or 2d side scroller platform games that my Turbo-graphx-16 could run.... . Just make some stellar single player games with compelling stories and characters and it will sell....the last good SP game i played was "The Evil Within 2" (yeah i love horror games...3rd person tho)...and that game was bigger and better than the last game....side missions that were optional, but rewarded you with ammo and weapons and more story content....terrifying and disturbing imagery...with no fluff about social networking or things of that nature and no side missions hiding behind DLC....a full fledged horror experience. Those are the games i appreciate...the developers putting their all into their work and trying to give you themost bang for your buck instead of charging for every single side story concept..

Oh, the topsy-turvy world we live in where AAA means terrible. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree, I've made few exceptions to focusing on indie-devs over the last years, except I'm different, I look back at PS2 and think what an epic system it was, with a virtually inexhaustible list of good games, then saw the decline in PS3, and still haven't got a reason to get a PS4. There's about one game that vaguely interests me on PS4, and I'm 90% sure it'll eventually come to PC, Square Enix are addicted to ported re-releases.

I bought The Last Guardian in the sale and I'm finding that to be great (the monster animates incredibly well!) and I'm interested in Shadow of the Colossus remake... but other than those, I've got the Uncharted games and Last of Us. Most games I get now on Steam.

An open world (system? galaxy?) space game is an extremely problematic thing to do in an engaging way. The first thing that you need to know about space is that it's REALLY BIG. If you do it in a video game format it would be extremely boring, or you do a miniature space game and you lose the actual immersion of space travel. Other problems are that it's highly unrealistic to do worlds with dense content. Most of the planets and moons in our solar system are barren wastelands/gas giants with nowhere to land, and even earth, if you point at a random location most likely it will be an ocean or a lonely piece of land. Getting between star systems is even bigger of a problem because of the extreme distances. You can't even begin to imagine how far a light year is. Pluto is on average 2 light hours from us. You can solve it with FTL, but it kinda cheapens the experience IMO.
