Yeah, I'm level 20, going through a area, and oh great, this interesting weapon I just picked up is level 9. That drives me crazy.

No, because at that level, I have crafted a weapon that is much better than a lower level weapon.

Ah yes, when I killed the Hinterlands dragon at lvl 11 and all its loot was lvl 15, and there weren't any storage chests yet. Those were the days. But yes, just craft something, at least for your Inquisitor, and give the loot to party members you don't use as much.

I craft all my gear, but getting the low grade stuff is still annoying. Crappy loot sucks the fun out of exploring, not to mention I use loot to equip most of my crew (not patient enough to craft all of their stuff too). The way I prioritized the missions in my current playthrough, I was always ridiculously over-leveled for the main quests, somehow, so I rarely got any decent stuff. Until Jaws of Hakkon. If the loot is fancier, I can at least stare at it lovingly for a couple of moments before throwing it into Valuables.

Having an inventory capacity Mod helps. As well, I tend to craft my weapons and armor for my companions and my Inquisitor. I like being able to name them silly things like Stabby. I agree about crappy loot being a bummer, so I either sell it for $$$$ or destroy it to make room for the good stuff.

Yeah but in the other dirrection. Hey thats a nice armor...that I can't use until level 15 and is already inferior to the armor I can craft and use at any level. So I'm never going to use this one...in the bin it goes.
Especially annoying when I can't craft anything at the moment and certain tevinter mages are only wearing their swaddling clothes and baby staffs but too low level to use any other item in the inventory.

Well at least it is better than DA2 when the companions had their own custom armour, so I kept picking up stuff that could only be worn by someone not of my class and it was thus completely useless to me. That was annoying.
The problem over the PC being overpowered for the level of equipment was the only one. If you maxed out on doing side quests then you quickly advanced to a higher level than a lot of creatures you subsequently encountered. Since you don't get experience points if there is too greater a disparity between you it meant you were involved in fighting a lot of annoying critters for no benefit whatsoever. Even some higher level encounters, like dragons, could end up too low to give you points if you went back for them at the wrong time. Even Corypheus was ridiculously easy for a completionist PC.
Once I'd played the game a couple of times I was able to plan my progress to overcome this but it did seem to be a fault of the basic game which they managed to overcome in the DLC.
I would add that certain items can be boosted considerably using the crafting table and the right masterwork runes. I did this with a number of the named unique staffs I came across in the game and also some of the other items.

It needs to be fixed for da4. The level 5 helmet at the intro was ridiculous (mountain path). What have been much more useful to f the smith could fix it so we could wear it. Loot system needs a total overhaul. The level 1 schematics sold at/only Redcliffe village are also a waste. By the time I can get to redcliffe im level 8+ plus the golden nug doesn’t save level 1 stuff. Who’s carrying around qunari masks

If only there was a way to exchange these items for some type of currency via local merchants! I’ve come to understand that in human civilization, ‘money’ can be used to purchase various goods and services.
In all seriousness, I do feel a twinge of disappointment when unique items are too weak for me to actually use.

At least in DA2 some heavy armors could be worn by Blood Mages. It contributed to what made them op at launch.
In Inquisition I always take the barter perks early to maximize profit and just craft gear for everybody(takes time, but worth it).

It's part of the disastrous game design when it comes to loot in general. Sure, I don't give a fuck if it's a random item, but when it's a unique? an item that you wont ever again find, and it happens to be something you could use? Mother of fucker. It pisses the living fucks out of me. And fuck crafting also, so much for "it's optional" .
I happen to be playing the game again (want to try the DLCs and see if I like more the plot, also I don't want to read the wiki when DA5 comes like I did with DA2 DLCs), and man, the loot system in this game is one of the worst I've seen.

I like some of the Trial rewards. I haven't seen a way to craft Heart of Despair's the Permafrost effect, and it ridiculous resistances on a weapon of my own. Granted it is a level 24 weapon though.
As for not getting experience from lower level mobs, just turn on the trial that raises lower level mobs to your level.

One big problem with the system I've noticed is that you can get your hands on schematics earlier than you can actually use equivalently-powerful looted items. There's nothing you have the levels to use that's worth buying in Val Royeaux in the early game, but you can afford at least some tier 2 schematics, and even with tier 1 mats those will be plenty good.
Of course, the Golden Nug blows up balance completely, but anyone who's interested in balance isn't going to use the full power of the Nug in the first place.

Think of it this way: common and rare (blue) weapons are just gold with encumbrance. From that perspective, I'm never disappointed with the weapons I find, not to mention the upgrades I can't use. Besides, a completed game where I farmed all schematics + Trespasser + Golden Nug means I'm never without Tier 2+ schematics and can craft up whatever I want.

I think sometimes it's just the special effect or mix of stats that might not be available at the time. Though I play on console, I wonder if there's a PC mode that can make items stats scale to level when picked up, etc.

I don't know what's the scale of modding in Inquisition, not big I'm sure. But the Nexus does have a dedicated page for Inquisition, so there must be something.
