Mass Effect has been called Jack Bauer in space. If the events of fall 2001 did not happen it is likely that 24 would never became as big as it did. The new BSG might not have been successful. Mass Effect took some inspiration from the new BSG as well as Babylon 5. The people of Bioware wanted to create a universe with a story that would be a trilogy. A look at the Mass Effects that almost wereWhat would Mass Effect be like in an alternate timeline? Could you imagine an alternate Mass Effect with an enslaved humanity and time travel? With aliens that looked like they came from a fantasy world? I have heard without the war on terror you see more anti corporate messages. Would that mean we would still see a shadowy organization or big corporation try to take control of the big bad and use it to make humanity reign supreme? Would you like to do a TL about an alternate Mass Effect and include the video games and culture war? In this TL Martin Sheen gets the part Luthor Sloane in Star Trek DS9? If this happens would he still want to be the Illusive Man? Would they still include romance scenes and be attacked by Fox News?

Fox News. Lol!
I have nothing useful to add. I just can’t avoid laughing when those two words appear in combination.

I never watched more than a few hours of 24, but I don't see that much resemblance between Shepard and Jack Bauer from what I know of the latter. Maybe a little if you make certain Renegade decisions.

I can never tell if you're trolling or you have the strangest ideas going around in your head. This someone's alt? Can't be dutch, too wordy for luzarius.

See, the problem here is that you didn't put "SJW" in the title. Talking about the war on terror is so pre-2014.

I lived it, and even I am still shocked by the size of 80s shoulder pads and hair.

Maybe a little if you make certain Renegade decisions. Come to think of it, I remember "24 in space" being used only in a negative sense: "Mass Effect isn't supposed to be 24 in space." It used to come up a lot when people complained that the "Race against Time" in ME1 was pretty much the opposite of a race against time.

If the WoT didn't happen, any Mass Effect might have been less military space shooter, yes. I think it was the 00s that really pushed that kind of concept hard. Not just Halo, and much more than the 90s did. Psst the aliens we shoot are code for generalized external enemy! That's not to say Mass Effect is actually all that stuff - its the liberal subversion to try to convince us to be more open and accepting - but the game mechanics and general genre design might have been less pew pew bad guys.
I do think there were seeds of things even as back as developing the first Mass Effect, that were dropped for what we got. ME1 seemed to work with a really corporate-themed skeleton, but then often ignored it for the dehumanized enemy faction and mutated or monstrous ('machine devil') main villains.
Instead, I do indeed think we'd have had more enemies that were associated with human and alien corporations, and the godly alien and/or machine overlords would be focused on managing us (with some exterminations) and not exterminating us (with some managing). The gunplay might focus more on the streets (like Citadel allies) than battlefields (Feros ruins). The conspiracies would be less about stopping or assisting the reaping of all life in the galaxy, and more about taking advantage of or assisting in the chaos of the struggle against our overlords.
MET has all the stuff I'm saying, but I think the focus might have been different. As the trilogy went on, SPECTRE mattered less, and N7 mattered more - military.
