This is a good point, made more clear by the fact that, if you choose to make him human, he has more agency in Trespasser. Throughout most of DAI, Cole is defined by what he is, which makes sense considering what he is. However, I will add that the fandom exacerbates the feeling of him being a plot device by the way he's used in fanfic and so forth. I've been guilty of it myself. It's just so easy and convenient as a way to drive things forward, or create conflict or spur resolution. That's exactly what the game's writers did. Cole is little more than a device for exposition on other character's feelings. Not to mention being a dig on players who exclusively save scum and use wikis to get the "correct" outcome for characters, as opposed to actually role playing ...

I started every playthrough with varric being my favorite rogue companion but my latest playthrough will be Cole. His ability to tap into the dead and describe what happened is awesome
I really hope we see him again in a novel or gameplay
Quick question on Cole. When he shows up in haven does he teleport in or is he invisible?. If he teleports can he show up anywhere?

wickedcool He turned invisible and followed Inquisitor to Haven. As far as I know, he can't teleport.

He's just invisible. When he appears on War Table, he says he was on it for some time (if you choose the right dialogue option). Inquisitor and others just didn't see him.

Quick questions on Cole
If we side with templarsis Cole sucked into the mind with us or does he go willingly. Currently reading asunder and he gets pulled. Into the fade/demons thoughts What type of spirit is he and what exactly is he now Does solas really not know what Cole is? Seems far fetched for who solas really is

Into the fade/demons thoughts What type of spirit is he and what exactly is he now Does solas really not know what Cole is? Seems far fetched for who solas really is Since canon says Cole was pulled in, we can say that Champions of the Just had Cole unwittingly roped in with the Inquisitor. He's a spirit of Compassion and that hasn't changed. Solas knows he's a spirit of Compassion and has no reason to doubt Cole telling him what his nature compels him to since there's no reason to hide it.

Cole is identified by a few key figures (namely Solas and the Command Spirit of Crestwood) as a spirit of compassion, but it can be debated that he was a demon durring asunder. Or at least was succumbing to demonic tendencies. As he is now though, Cole is largely a better adjusted compassion spirit...mostly. Cole is still considered unusual for his kind for several reasons, one of which is that he has his own human body... And by the time his personal quest comes around, it is clear that Cole is having to deal with the peculiarities of his rather unique circumstances and growth.
