I just started watching the new Black Mirror season on Netflix, and in the first episode, some people are in a sci-fi virtual reality game and come across a planet called Rannoch (though they mis-hear it as "Rannocht" at first). Plus, at one point, an obnoxious online player declares himself the "king of space" - am I correct in remembering that the cranky krogan bounty hunter on Noveria tells Shepard, "Yeah, and I *could* be the king of space"? I wouldn't think much of the latter, but "Rannoch" seems like a pretty big coincidence if Bioware and the Black Mirrorwriters were otherwise just making up random cool-sounding names. Has Charlie Brooker or anyone else involved with Black Mirror ever said whether they've played any sci-fi video games?

This show is awesome, though it’s very very short in episodes per season.

I just watched this episode, and I wouldn't be surprised. The Infinity game they depict is a pretty complex RPG, and Mass Effect is probably the closest real world thing. If it's a coincidence, it's a huge, really cool, coincidence.
Also, that was an amazing episode.

Has anyone else gotten to the episode Hang the DJ yet? I'm trying to figure out if we're actually supposed to see it as a "happy ending" or not. It seems to me that the episode should acknowledge that the simulations of Frank and Amy might be sentient, in which case they are basically murdered at the end. The episodes San Junipero, White Christmas, and U.S.S. Callister all seemed to take the position that, yes, digital recreations *can* in fact acquire sentience, that they should be accorded rights, and that it’s valid and necessary to pass moral judgment on how flesh-and-blood people treat digital people. This last point was perhaps not really an issue either way in San Junipero, but the Jon Hamm character and the authorities in White Christmas, as well as Daly in U.S.S. Callister, were all portrayed negatively for manipulating and/or torturing digital people.
So why shouldn’t we look similarly askance at the creators of this dating app? A better ending might have been to reveal that RL Frank and Amy didn’t realize what went into identifying them as a match and have them become outraged at what their digital copies were subjected to in order to get them together.

I didn't, but I watched White Bear the other night and noticed it. The Mass Effect connection is probably coincidence, then.

Hah, the search function actually took me to the thread I was looking for. I'm a huge Black Mirror fan, I watched all episodes, some of them twice (White Bear, White Christmas - those always leave me shuddering). Some others I didn't like that much, but I don't mind - I appreciate that so many different topics are explored in one series, and even in the ones I don't like so much, I can find interesting bits and pieces to ponder about. The reason I'm posting here is to ask if any of you have seen the latest addition, the interactive episode Bandersnatch? I did, and I'm curious about what you guys made of it. Personally, I liked the concept, and the ending I got was plausible in the framework of the episode. Still, I got a bit confused about certain elements like What did he dream and what actually happened? It's hard to distinguish at some points in the story. I also had the feeling I sucked at taking the "right" decisions (if there even is such a thing), as I had to go through some archs a few times.
Also, I messed up the telephone number, and I'm super curious on what would have happened if I dialled correctly.
I checked a summary on YouTube after I was finished, but this part wasn't covered, or I missed it.

Also, Nosedive is the title of an episode in season 3. There are many more easter eggs hidden in Bandersnatch. There's one scene with a newspaper, where a few other episodes are referenced.
This is often something they do across the series, and I love those tiny details, even if they are not relevant for the story.

I really liked the Bandersnatch episode! One sidenote though: Any serious 1984 game would have likely been programmed in assembler instead of ZX Spectrum BASIC, but since I owned one myself, it's a nice nod

At least we had those good old BASIC interpreter error codes like " P - FN without DEF" and "G - No room for line": always good fun!
