Back on the old BSN, I made a thread about the possibility of BioWare maybe implementing some kind of in-game instant messaging system, to supplement the regular conversations we have with our companions/supporting characters. It'd replace - or at least operate alongside of - the old email system, and give us the chance to actually interact with the characters we've run into on past missions - the kind who'd send 'thank-yous' and such via email in ME2/3 - who generally wouldn't merit a slice of the voice acting/animation budget. It'd also allow us to get to know our companions better, as we'd be able to have more conversations with them than would be possible if every single conversation had to be voice acted and animated. An economical path into more of that juicy, juicy dialogue. Well, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (kinda) did it! They used the system very differently, of course - it was more of an extra means of gathering information/gaining an advantage from hacked computers - but the basic concept - supplementing cinematic conversations with a lore-consistent, text-based alternative - was there, and it worked. The implementation - basically, just take the game's regular dialogue wheel minus the voice acting - is pretty much exactly what I had in mind, too. (Though, obviously, BioWare's dialogue wheels function quite differently from Deus Ex's, in practice.) Of course, Deus Ex giving it a go doesn't really have any bearing on whether BioWare might try it, but still, it was super cool to see that an actual game developer had a similar idea, and thought it was genuinely worth implementing. It gives me some hope that we might yet see something similar in Andromeda, or perhaps a future BioWare game. ... To be absolutely clear, I am in no way suggesting Eidos Montreal actually got the idea from me--that'd be utterly ridiculous. I just thought it was cool that a recent game had actually tried something similar. (Alpha Protocol had another take on the concept, with emails, but that was years ago, and a lot of that game's great ideas kinda got buried in the jank, so it rarely seems to influence anyone.)

I think this would be pretty nice if it was used to supplement or enhance the face-to-face/cinematic conversations. In other words, you'd not be missing out on any significant content if you chose never to look at the emails or engage in the back and forth.
Especially given the email system in Mass Effect, it might be nice to have the option to reply, even if that's all it is and it doesn't lead to any further dialogue or consequences. It's just added roleplay which is always good to have.

Yeah, a good idea in principle. Sadly however, I can see it going the other way. I dont want to be in the middle of a firefight, two of my crew are already down, I'm out of grenades and down to my last clip of ammo and... *BING BONG* "Do you want to go bowling cousin"?
NO! I do not f*cking want to go bowling I do not wish to engage in any other activity other than saving my own hide!

Besides, the best thing about text-based communication is that, unlike with Roman's incessant phone calls, you can take your time responding.

I'd like to see this! I was rather annoyed that you did not have the option of replying to certain emails you recieved especially in Mass Effect 2 where Spaceborn Shepard don't even have the option of trying to reply to their mother despite going on a suicide mission.
It could be a neat thing especially if it could add more conversations with companions since it requires text, not voice acting. It'd also be cute if the companions reply differently like one has trouble using email (the Andromedan?) so their emails might contain auto-correct accidents, unintentional smileys or the email cuts off mid-sentence.
Example: "Where are you?" "In the med bay." "You got time?" "Yes, I have just finishing killing Drak." "What?!/Well, can't say I'm surprised/without me?!" "Drilling him. I have just finished drilling Drak about the last mission (ping) But I do wish to kill him."
Example: "Your Welshman is oddly pleasent for such a loud thing." "Which one?" "The one in your quarters?" "There's a Welshman in my quarters?!" "The strange thing that hangs over your desk." "That's a windchime." "Your technology is prostrating. (ping) Frustrating!"
It could also be a good way of informing the player when the companion is avaliable for a new conversation so you don't have to check the companion manually. If the companions roams like before, then maybe the player can ask for their location as well. Basically like above but with "Where are you?" and "You got time?" being two separate options.
The companion could also send you a message about something they want to discuss or someone else sends you a message and if the companion is somewhere else than normal then a location as well.
Example: "Hey Ry, something's come up. Need to talk to you."
Example: "I need to talk to you in private. There's a spot in the lower decks where the camera don't reach. Meet me there"
Example: "Feel like celebrating? Drak is even busting out that bottle he's always bragging about and we got cards going. We're in Drak's room"
Example: "That krogan of yours was bad enough before but he's been spoiling for a fight and it's got my engineers on edge. Get him under control. He's your responsibility"
It could also be nice to recieve emails from the crew in some fashion.
Example: "The turian, I don't know his name, he's been asking about the incident and you. I thought you should know. I may not like you but it's not fair you take the fall for what your old man did"
Example: "Hey Ryder, me and some of the other guys are thinking about starting a poker night. You want in?" "Sure/No/Oh, you're going to regret this" "I'll mail you when/oh, okay/Ha, we'll see"
It would also be nice if I could just check and handle emails on my omni-tool when off-duty instead of having to go to the terminal each time. Yeah, I know it is a minor thing but it would be nice.

I don't disagree - as I said, I wouldn't want this to replace the existing conversations so much as supplement them/open up the possibility of talking with people who we'd usually just get that one thank-you note from - but... Well, I suppose it depends on what you mean by, 'significant content'? I'd certainly want the text-based conversations to feel meaningful and compelling, and offer extra insight--you might as well not have them, otherwise.

For example, missing out on a sidequest or something because you didn't respond. I agree I'd like them to be meaningful and compelling but I think there would have to be a balance as well - as we've both said, embellishing content rather than moving something that should be in a cutscene or mission to just text.

I've actually thought about this before. Glad to see other people have the same ideas. Also, to contribute to the discussion, it would be cool if people could also send pictures with their emails. It'd help make the conversations more interesting. Instead of just telling you something, they could show you. Maybe they could even send videos.

Thats an excellent idea. I would have liked it very much. Just keep in mind that Bioware wanted to convey the 80's Sci-Fi in ME feel and instant messaging will kinda break it.

in me3 you read stuff at your terminal in the cabin and then push the button to summon people to your quarters...
I don't see any value in sending messages yourself to reply to someone, maybe a cutscene where you watch a vid of your protagonist interacting with other people could be slightly more immersive but I don't think so, I like having to choose the convo options
the dxmkd online chat system on certain terminals was a nice touch but it didn't make any sense, other than the time you get the quest to sort out the news paper, if you explore the game world in the wrong order the quests don't happen leaving everything as a disjointed mess... they tried to hard to be too many things and ultimately failed to achieve the objectives..
I hope bioware hasn't made similar mistakes

I hope bioware hasn't made similar mistakes I mean, the value is in getting to have a branching conversation - with dialogue options - that you wouldn't have gotten to have otherwise, because voice acting and animation cost a lot of money compared to just pure writing. It's an economical means of getting more dialogue in the game than would be possible if every single conversation had to be fully cinematic. And I don't really agree on Deus Ex. I mean, yes, it was indeed weird and disjointed in places, but the same's true of every Deus Ex game that's ever been made, and the fact that the game doesn't stop you from, say, breaking into the Palisade Bank before it's given you any good reason to is part of the appeal. Sure, it leads to some amount of funkiness, but that's the trade-off you're always going to get with giving the player that amount of freedom. You can mitigate it to some extent, but it's always going to be there, unless you take away the option to go 'off-script', as it were. Which is fine for a BioWare RPG, but not so much for a Deus Ex game.

You can mitigate it to some extent, but it's always going to be there, unless you take away the option to go 'off-script', as it were. Which is fine for a BioWare RPG, but not so much for a Deus Ex game. they managed it perfectly fine in other games, the reason its such a poor experience in mkd is they clearly had a much bigger game in the works but squeenix pulled the funding and forced them to asset strip bits out and the code tweaks to leave the rest semi functional have left the rest of the game glitchy. they also reworked the order of some quests, you get news stories telling you to go look at something but that something doesn't even happen for another 2 chapters.... you get side quests failing to trigger because you already found the some quest location or item before that point in the story, hell I played the game through 3 times just trying to trigger the penguin quest and still couldn't find it.... you can have open world with quests locked until the story makes them pertinent, it just means going back to already discovered locations, that's not even a difficult thing plenty of games mange that (look at tw3/dai/me/skyrim as examples) it just makes the game slightly annoying since you have to keep jumping around or recrossing old ground but mkd already has that in spades so its not even like doing it would break the game.... heck there isn't even a reason to speak to the info vendors there not listed as shops and they don't approach you to offer trades.... mabe if eidos had staken the extra tiem required and not decided to strip out chunks of the game for release later as dlc's it wouldn't feel quite so much like "we called this game deux ex and we give it cool gfx so you must like it derp derp" but they screwd the pooch on this one so cool gfx aside the main quest(s) are sort of ok but the rest just doesn't mesh well and it feels like a mess...
