First of all, thank you for your interest in my little... not sure I would call it problem, more like it it confuses me to the point I just need to know whyyyy.
Okay, here's the thing: I like to shareplay, and do so often with a few of my friends. Most of the time this is not an issue, but I have this one friend I couldn't share-play with because the connection speed was said to be too slow. We tried everything, we both upgraded our speeds, we tried changing the MTU, we tried a bunch of other stuff but to no avail. To make matters even more weird, I could watch him play but not vice versa. My other friends have had no issues with my shareplay.
Then one day after we had tried for hours (half of which I spent in customer support) I decided to try one last stupid thing, and suddenly the shareplay worked and has worked ever since. What I did? I SWITCHED FROM LAN TO WIFI. How could that possibly make the connection speed faster or more reliable?! I even tested the different speeds and found the LAN to be (obviously) a lot better.
This has bugged me to no end - does ANYONE have any idea why this worked? It wasn't a fluke either, it has worked changing to wifi consistently for weeks now.
Please, can anyone save my sanity?

The only thing I can think of, is that your router's wifi is faster then its physical connection. As for reliability, that would depend on the length of the cord and the cord itself.
What router do you have? And how old is the cord your using?

I checked the connection speed, the LAN was waaay faster. As for the Router it's an Asus RT-N56U and the chord is only a year old, but I do use a powerline to get the Internet through via the receptacles (the wifi is a bit too far away to use a chord easily). When I play using my wifi I often lag a little, which I never do when I use my LAN, which is why this just doesn't make any sense.

Ok, before we go any further we need to do some basic trouble shooting. Before that though, I need to know what you have available to you, to trouble shoot with.
So, what is the age of the cable your trying to use? How many ports is your router using? And have you ever messed with the configuration of the router?

But why does it still work with everyone else? It's just this one friend I have issues connecting with, and I can even watch him shareplay. Edit* Also we tried with a regular chord, made no difference. the problem is either your router has a firewall thats specifically blocking his ability to watch or the powerline adaptors crapping out (which every type does) its 99% likely to be the powerline adaptors causing the problem, they are inhernatly a crap invention for anything other than the most basic consumption only connection, it is far better to get a series of long Ethernet leads (up to 25meters in length of shielded cat 6) and if necessary to give longer reach a couple of simple unmanaged switches (for reference i have 5 simple unmanged switches and 3 25 meter long runs between them provding a total of 30 connections to a single port on my router and all of them run at 1gbps connection speeds) another common problem with powerlines is they are essentially a complete access solution to a private network loop and add in header information to the transport stream some routers strip this out before onwards transmission others strip it out when receiving the information some leave it in on both sides which then becomes a problem if the receiver has the same brand of powerline adaptors in their home setup and you both are running in the default setup for them..... oh and since there powerline adaptors changing them from the default setup often means they crap out more frequently or wont work at all until you do the factory reset on them... then of course is the just for shits and giggles factor, unless you have a one way diode on your electrical connection you can inadvertently share your internet with any other powerline user within 100meters of you.... made for fun times when one guy couldn't figure out how he was using up his internet allowance in a single day in a tower block i can tell you ....

Yeah, we tried the long Ethernet chord without any change, so I've ruled that one out (I was pretty convinced it was the powerline too). I'm using what I assume is the main port and port no 1 (sorry, remember I'm not very tech savvy and English is not my first language). My next suspicion was that it's something with the ports, but for some reason I can't gain access to them even when I use the password clearly written on it. I probably should try to reset it, but it's such a bother! I think it's literally the only thing I haven't tried yet.
I mean, I can get it to work with just my wifi, it just bothers me because it doesn't make any sense. Also the connection would obviously be more stable if I could use LAN instead.

This is a crazy idea but have you tried disabling the wifi completely and trying with LAN alone. www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1001005/I have had issues where wifi restricts and holds a certain amount of bandwidth -it is a strange issue nonetheless.

Huh, I don't think I've tried that? Worth a shot I guess, although it's late where I live now so I will have to wait until tomorrow evening until I can ask my friend to try it. I'm open to try most things at this point (would hate if it was the router though, not too fond of the idea of having to disable it every time I want to shareplay with this friend). Edit* Like I mentioned I can't gain access to my router settings (it keeps saying I have the wrong password even though I'm using the one on the router), but I will unplug it completely instead to try it out.

do a factory reset. That will reset your routers password to the factory defaults.
you may need to re-boot your modem as well.

Fixed by resetting to Factory Default... Find the slot and use paper clip end to push the factory default button. ...Unless you are not the administrator... if so ask the one who is for the password to reset. do a factory reset. That will reset your routers password to the factory defaults. you may need to re-boot your modem as well. Indeed. Always good to have a paper clip on hand.

Why do you have to make sense?! Ugh, I guess I have to, I'm just worried I will somehow mess it up and end up without Internet (and I'm unemployed, so I need Internet like most people need hydration). If you think I'm overreacting with my fear of tech you should know I, among other things, actually managed to break a CD in my computer once - I can manage to fail anything.

Did you mean we do not make sense and you do or we make sense and you do not? If this is what your asking I am confused. No need to fear technology. Technology is your friend. EMBRACE IT! You think breaking a CD is bad. I partially electrocuted myself -messing with computer hardware when I was 12 -been worse if I had not been partially grounded. I have broken many CD's/DVD's out of sheer annoyance -but didn't need them anymore at that point anyhow . I have broken CD trays -which I have then fixed later. That said... Worse case scenario is the modem does not reset and dies.
