Highlights...- Mike's been trying his hand at consulting, and has worked with four different groups so far. - He had worked at BioWare for 14 years. - War Stories: BioWare being flooded, bad hotel ham giving all the leads Norovirus... - Mike wanted to try something new (get more involved with Twitch, consulting, etc.) and left when most of the DA team moved over to Anthem and they were in kind of a lull. That being the least disruptive time to leave the project. - He feels that Patrick and Daniel (Kading) are both very strong in their fields, and that while they will likely do things in DA differently than he would, feels it will be really interesting/cool. - He joked about working at Microsoft for 5 years, then coming back to run the whole studio. - He's going to give a talk at GDC. - He also talkes a little about DA2, and the challenges of an extremely short Dev cycle. Most of which we've heard over the years. - On DA2, due to the limited Dev time, he wanted to have story take place over several years time, so they could use the same environment assets again and again. - His pick for the best RPG of the last 10 years: Skyrim. Protagonist, mod support, breadth of activities, took the open world formula and refined it. Witcher, etc. also named as among the best. - And discussed the similarities and contrasts between DA & W3. Nothing new really though. - Mike is big Cyberpunk fan (big Neuromancer fan). Might even be tempted to work on CP2077 if offered.

Thanks for the highlights, Hrungr. I really can't be arsed to watch video interviews of people and would much rather read something over 10-20 minutes than spend a couple of hours watching a video. Yet another instance of a now-gone dev stating their reasons for leaving. Let's see how many people will blatantly ignore the person's own words and insinuate, or outright state, that there was some terrible reason that will never be known to the general public. I think more emphasis should be given to the fact that the longevity we've seen from people like Mike Laidlaw and David Gaider, particularly in working on the same project, is very rare. It's not at all surprising that they left, really, when you consider that fact.

Thanks for the summary, I also can't afford 2+ hours of listening time, unless I'm on a plane or something. - Mike wanted to try something new (get more involved with Twitch, consulting, etc.) and left when most of the DA team moved over to Anthem and they were in kind of a lull. That being the least disruptive time to leave the project. As one of the aforementioned sky-is-falling worriers when someone leaves Bioware, I find this very reassuring. I will now change my boards tune from "he left because EA forced Bioware to do lootboxes in DA" to "he dodged a bullet by leaving before EA forced Bioware to do lootboxes for DA". In before the CDPR fanboys start raging over this Bioware filth contaminating their pristine and virtuous Cyberpunk game!

Interesting. Yeah, generally speaking I do listen to podcasts (from selected people), but 2 hours of an interview with a lot of random talk is perhaps a bit too much. Maybe if I have some time and have nothing else to do I'll give it a go. For now the highlights will do.

Kinda sad he left, but at least people wont trash him personally if Bioware goes on with shady behavior aka loot boxes for the next DA.

Just FYI there are timestamps so you don't have to wade through the entire thing to find Mr. Laidlaw.

Guy's looking chill and a lot less stressed these days...wouldn't be a shock to see him return to Bioware in a couple years though. These little career changes often act as a good way to reset yourself mentally and gain a fresh perspective.

Never liked him as lead designer for Dragon Age. Took the design philosophy for Origins and scrapped it for DA:2, then took those philosophies and scrapped them for DA:3, and I've never felt they've settled on what Dragon Age wants to be.
Good luck to him, but I'm quite glad he's gone.

Took the design philosophy for Origins and scrapped it for DA:2 Sadly, we will never know the game DA2 would have been had they not had a rushed development.

I'd kill to know how the team got shafted with a 16 month dev cycle for DA2.

Good luck to him, but I'm quite glad he's gone. I'm glad that Gaider it's gone too, that guy was becoming more full of himself as the years went by, getting more idiot and more generic. (he settled quite too much comfortable in his office too) So yeah i'm quite glad he was one of the first ones to go.

Might even be tempted to work on CP2077 if offered. I don't want this, I don't really like his work on DA franchise and how proud he was when presenting DA:I's open world formula during pre-release stream. And if given the chance, he would probably leave quickly, because CDP are just starting with CP2077 and already crunching. It's essentially ME:Andromeda situation- crunch after scrapping previous version of the game that took years to develop. My friends are fleeing that place. It's better to wait and see any real sign of CP2077 before joining. Right now it's a development hell. Sure, it's nice to work on a big AAA project that everyone anticipate, but geez, think about your health and family, it's more important.
