ME 3 had crisper looking environments and textures but ME 2 had better looking character models. I also preffered ME 2's galaxy map. It was more vibrant and actually easier to see to use for me. I know they darkened the game on purpose in ME 3 because of the situation in game with the reaper war but I preferred ME 2s overall interface.

ME2 have ugly shadows.... like they're hiding how badly textured they are than ME1. Those weren't GPU based shadows, but rather low resolution 2D shadow map textures. Same goes for the lightmaps and cubemaps (reflections). Some of them are only a mere 64x64 or 128x128 pixels in side. Look like jagged staircases instead of a nice smooth edge you'd see in the GPU based effects.
Each game from the trilogy seems to use a mix of textured shadows, lights, and reflections, as well as some parts have GPU based shadows, lights and reflections.
Also some of the ugly shadows that I noticed was when I had Depth of Field turned on in the vid-comm room. Turning it off minimized this effect.

I have to go with ME2. It had so much going for it. The characters, colors, the atmosphere and alien feeling with each planet we landed on. I think the only thing I really enjoyed about ME3 was the Silversun Strip.

They're kind of tied, all of them. There are things in MEA that holds up too, but it doesn't feel as alien or wondrous. ME2 had unsurpassed lighting and its shady and somewhat grimy look was what truly captured my attention visually. I'll never forget places like Sanctum or Binthu or Korlus. Their backgrounds have such a strong way of bringing out a magical feeling of "this is space..." you know? ME3's top points are its setpieces; as has been mentioned, Menae is a marvel to look at with the reapers in the background, the ships and bombers flying about and most of all, Palaven in all its glory. My personal preference was ME2 visually however. Its setting felt the most authentic to me.

ME3 in general, however, I absolutely love the balcony overlooking the scenic vista in Kasumi's loyalty mission.

I just got to the first part of Leviathan on my current playthrough and I think there is some real artistry (I know, I know, "artistic integrity") in the creepier-than-average atmosphere to the whole thing. I don't know if the music for when you first arrive at Dr. Bryson's lab is on any of the ME3 soundtracks, but I think it's one of the better pieces from any of the three games, and the disorientation of Bryson's assistant and the mining facility staff after being released by Leviathan is well-portrayed ("if 'dark' was a feeling..."). The facility staff are sort of darkly humorous in their zonked-out attempts to deflect Shepard (the Leviathans would suck as covert operatives, seeing as 'turn back, the darkness must not be breached' is not the sort of answer that dispels suspicion), but when they do say anything else, they often seem to be having pretty disturbing conversations, e.g. one of them who "doesn't know how to feel" about a recent death, or discussions of the effects of modified "pain stimuli."

Depends on what you ask me, for example characters I prefer Mass Effect 2 all the way, specially for my Shepards.
