Do people prefer Sustained Fire or Precision with shotguns? I prefer Precision if I think I’m running a Dhan or Crusader and Sustained Fire otherwise, but I’m curious what others think. I don’t fully understand the Sustained Fire mechanic with pellets, but it seems to work well. Hard to say sometimes though what is really happening...

My decision greatly depends on the character and build out I am currently running.
Weak points are hard (for me) to hit on console so I generally go for Precision if I am using an inaccurate weapon and don’t have passives or gear to make up for it. Sustained Fire buffs damage from all sources (and for your team), so it’s really good if you use powers along with your guns.
For instance, my Krogan Mercenary is specced now for Sustained Fire because I am using weapons (Piranha) to trigger the 24% damage buff and using Flamethrower and Flak Cannon in between reloads. If I switch to Precision, I would go with Tech Armor 5B Power Armor to get even more accuracy with the Piranha so I can leave the Smart Choke behind.
For my Human Infiltrator, I am going back and forth on this evolution. Do I go for a fast firing build (Sustained Fire) or a sniper build (Precision).

For the Krogan Merc, Sustained Fire increases melee damage significantly, especially if you also have Melee Synergy. Shoot shotgun, then headbutt... If you have Martial Arts also working, everything dies quickly. It's a great melee build, if you like headbutts, and I do....

Right now I have 5B Weapon Efficiency and only 4 points in Rage.

RAWWRR! My current melee Krogan Merc has only 1 in Flamethrower (it's still useful). Power Armor (4B) in Fortify adds another 30% melee damage. I use Unmoving Defense to take a break and recover shields. For Munitions Training I use 4B (+20% melee dmg), 5A (Melee Synergy) and 6A (Sustained Fire). I use Rage 4A, 5B (Martial Arts can give +65% melee dmg), and 6A. I also use Disruptor Ammo (which stuns), and the Heavy Melee mod (+40% melee dmg) on my Scattershot Siphon X. Finally, there is the Juggernaut Shield equipment. (I like the extra shields for survivability.)
With this build, shoot the shotgun with the Disruptor ammo to stun and drop shields, and then do the headbutt thing. Rarely will you need a second headbutt. Sometimes I use this character to solo Bronze/Silver to get Combat XP. I'm not sure he's tanky enough for a Plat solo, though... If anyone can do it, you can!

Platinum Berserkers have 20250 to 25312.5 (Boss variant) health. A Platinum Behemoth has 67500. That's a lot of headbutts! Devices and Retrieval are really hard objectives on Paradox (against either Remnant or Outlaws). The speed at which those Destroyers, Hydras, Berserkers, and Observers converge on you is so fast! If I can get this run done, it will make for a great video, but man, it's tough going on this map.

There is no reason to select accuracy/headshot over sustained fire, the enemy debuff is for the entire squad and all forms of damage. The accuracy buff is for that gun.
This is another one of those "good on paper, but not in the game" situations. The only time you'd want headshot weakness are on enemies that are more than likely to die from the single headshot anyway. 2% debuff per shot is greater damage than 20% headshot weakness, unless your literally playing solo.

Thanks for putting this way, it's definitely given me something else to consider when I inevitably go back over my characters. Most of them were built before I had any clue how the game worked, and only played Bronze, so yeah, a lot of bad builds that I need to correct

Sometimes I use this character to solo Bronze/Silver to get Combat XP. I'm not sure he's tanky enough for a Plat solo, though... If anyone can do it, you can! So I tried this build out last night and while the headbutts were very powerful (kill an Adhi with one melee), Berserkers have too much armor. Dealing with one was easy enough, but two or three at a time became unmanageable. If they headbutted me, my shields would drop and my health would take a hit. Since headbutts don't regain my health, I had to resort to my Scattershot, which lowered my DPS. This would give the Berserkers time to flak cannon or headbutt me back, and I was constantly at low health. By the time I got it back, more Berserkers would appear to start the process all over again. I think it could work in a team Platinum, but it's tough going in a solo.

I can see how RAWWR! just doesn't cut it on Plat. The Berserker problem is tough for any character, especially when they come in pairs with their grabby Adhis. I did have fun with this character on a Gold Hand-to Hand mission the other day. I might try Plat with this build if I had a Shorty Siphon...lol (like that will ever happen)
