I started playing ME2 not knowing there might be a link to the first one. I cleared Omega and there was no clear direction of where to go from there. After doing some research on the game I learned I should go to a planet that started with an L. I think. I forget the name. When I cleared that planet the game gave me no clue as to what to do next. Since I didn't play the first one I'm wondering if that's my problem with #2.

I'm not sure what your question is. Are you confused about what you're supposed to do next? Which quest are you on in the quest log?

Check your journal.
Primary Missions advance the plot, and can gain you new squadmates or earn squadmate loyalties.
Secondary Missions are optional, but will earn you XP and some credits for beating them. Some secondary missions have upgrades you can research.
Also, check the galaxy map. Quests and hubs are marked on the galaxy map.

You can decide what to do on yourself (as RedCaesar97 says: look into the journal what missions are available) for pretty long parts of the game, before it'll tell you "do this". Part of the fun. Oh, I wish I could enjoy ME2 for a first time again! Tell us how you finished the game, should be interesting.  |
