You launch the game and get into the lobby. The first thing you do is import your canon Trespasser save (yes, T should be mandatory since it is the staging ground for this new chapter) and then press start. Loading... White letters on a smoky black background: City of Nessum, Nevarra -
17, Cloudreach, 954 Dragon
(All we see is the surface of a wodden table upon which sit a pitcher and three cups. Then we see a hand lifting one of the cups, gulping some of the content before the voice of Harding sound, reminiscing.) " It wasn't long after Movran the Under and his tribe were exiled to Tevinter. I had just returned to Skyhold from a field mission. I was having a quiet drink at the bar in Herald's Rest, when Cabot the bartender grunted that the Nightingale wanted me to join her, after last watch, in the abandoned library." She chuckles. "Up to that point I had no idea he was one of hers. Anyway... I paid him and nodded as I took another sip of my ale. Eventually I made my way down beneath the main keep. And there she was, standing near a dusky shelf, focused on an ancient tome until I cleared my throat to get her attention. She glanced up and and produced one of those chilling little smiles of hers." (We see someone else's hand pouring for everyone and Harding continues.) " She went straight to business, asking me if I knew at least one dwarf, man or woman, who was completely dedicated to the Inquisition; who had no ties to speak of here and who'd be willing to travel. When I asked where she just showed me the book she had been reading; it was open on a map of the Imperium... She explained that whoever was sent would leave Southern Thedas behind and live in Tevinter; they would have to blend in and wait. I just looked at her, waiting for more details and she smiled again, saying she liked to have options." " Plans within plans..." Another voice, Charter's. Then a third voice sounds, a man this time. " Do you think she knew, even then?" To which Charter replies, lowering her voice. " No. Nobody could have anticipated what happened at the Council; that's just how she operates. Don't forget who she was before you met Her... She asked for names and we provided them." Charter looks at each of them in turn, eyes intent. " We were told what we needed to know, no more - no less. Not even the Cripple sees the full picture, only Her." The man coughs, visibly uncomfortable, before he drains his cup and remarks. " I always assumed she wanted more eyes and ears." " And that's what they were..." Harding purses her lips and breathes. " Until now..." Charter nods and whispers. " The Qunari are getting ready to launch their final offensive... She believes the Apostate will use the chaos to make his move." No need to mention his name. The thin elven woman then produces a pouch from which she fishes out several metal disks, like coins made of steel and stamped with sunbursts pierced by a red blade. The camera focuses on one of them before fading into another smoky black background with the words 'Several days later...' A new image follows: a hand, indistinct in the flickering light of a brazier, is toying with a coin similar to those we saw earlier. Suddenly it clenches into a fist and then slaps the token flat on a table, next to a short message that reads: " It is time to get to work." The hand tosses the small scroll into the brazier and the title/logo of the new game forms out of the flame... ----- Loading... Here we get to the screen where we choose our sex, race, profession, social background.

In my mind, defection wouldn’t be encouraged. Quite the opposite: perhaps there are several options to defect “too early” in the game, before proving yourself to the new-Inquisition, that lead to your immediate arrest and a Game Over. After the Exalted Council, they can’t afford to take any chances... and their intelligence organization was helmed and staffed by Leliana for years. Openly share your identity? Dead. Let them capture and interrogate one of your co-conspirators? Dead. Get too close with a loyal-to-the-cause LI, too early in the game? Dead. My dream would be a game with so many unique Game Over slides that there’s an achievement for getting them all. Makes losing part of the fun! Plus, it ups the ante during dialogue choices — when a player knows that no dialogue choices can truly screw them over, there’s less weight to heroic or “dangerous” options. I love when games remove that guardrail. DA4 directed by Yoko Taro?

Plus, it ups the ante during dialogue choices — when a player knows that no dialogue choices can truly screw them over, there’s less weight to heroic or “dangerous” options. I love when games remove that guardrail. DA4 directed by Yoko Taro? Don’t have a Playstation, so I had to look him up. The games I was thinking of when I wrote that post were Long Live The Queen (a visual novel) and Affairs of the Court (an IF book). Aka two games with really sugary pink shells surrounding a bitter core of the most punishing bad-ending minefields imaginable. It’s not that the bad endings are unusually dark, it’s just... very very complicated to figure out how to get the good ones. And it has nothing to do with my reflexes as a player or anything like that — rather, it’s 100% about planning and scheming and experimenting. And learning to laugh at all my repeated character deaths. Now of course, a AAA RPG can’t have that convoluted of a plot. For one thing, as I mentioned before, it’s more burdensome to replay large portions of the game if you fuck up, so it can’t have as many of those “dead man walking” states (something can come back to bite the player later, but not 100% fatally). Plus each branch is more expensive overall, so the tree has to be simpler period. But man, if I wouldn’t love to have some more of those sudden character deaths.

As we have seen a few videos i have a theory. We start with the Video from DADay. Then comes a recap of DAI. After that the CC. I hope for different Origions but i doubt that they will do it ever again. Even if i thought the different factions were made for it. More likely we start in Kirkwall or somewhere around and Varric pick us up. Then we go for him and the Inquisition to Tevinter. Maybe different reasons depending on your background.
Lords of Fortune: For Money. spy: To get reputation. Mage: To get free.

Depending on the choices you made in DAI, the mages may already be free. Now I have pointed out how in the epilogue to Trespasser the situation seems to be reverting to the original status quo in terms of the amount of influence the College of Enchanters can exert in society, whilst Vivienne's Circle clearly holds the upper hand in that respect, but whoever is Divine, the mages do have more autonomy than prior to their rebellion, possibly reverting to how the Circles were originally meant to operate when Drakon established them. In other words, they were intended to be research establishments for those mages who wished to advance their magical studies where they would not pose a risk to society at large. However, mages were allowed to operate in the community provided they limited their magic and did not attempt to involve themselves in politics (which is why Vivienne's elevation to Divine is particularly ironic). Anyway, I think it more likely that the mage background is connected with Tevinter. In fact, if they start in the south, it might be because they had to flee there to escape their political enemies in Tevinter, which could be anyone from the Venatori to the Black Divine. That could then make for an interesting backstory because we want to get back to Tevinter to help our family/friends we had to leave behind. Alternatively, they were forced to flee from the advancing Qun. Again, they could link this to Tevinter as we could be a member of the Sicarri, whose family is being held hostage against our loyalty. On the whole a spy would not want a reputation, unless you are speaking specifically about the organisation that they serve. Even then, your motivation for being a spy does not have to be solely selfish ambition. What if you genuinely want to save your country from threats to its existence? Lords of Fortune: For Money. Whilst on the face of it the motivation of the Lords of Fortune is purely mercenary, there does seem to be an element of bravado among the members of their guild, which means they acquire status from the degree of danger involved in the enterprise or the type of artifact involved. Sometimes, as with "Herold had the plan", there can be an element of altruism in the activities of the individual LoF. On the whole, whilst I don't mind if our backgrounds are limited to just a few, I would want there to be a degree of choice in our specific motivation for getting involved.

Hopefully better than DAI. I thought not having a sequence interacting at the Mage/Templar conclave was a mistake...it would have provided an emotional connection to the story and provided better RP nuance from the start.

I don't think we will be a Tevinter person. In DA2 we came from Ferelden in DAI it is a little bit mixed. If we take that as pattern our human background would be Orlais. I think because of varric involvement we will start near him. And as i think he will be back at Kirkwall in DAD i think we start there.

If we take that as pattern our human background would be Orlais. I know there was this theory about the country of origin of the person in one game being the same as the setting of the previous game but I really don't buy this as an actual trend. Hawke was from Ferelden because they were a refugee from the Blight. All the various backgrounds for our DAI PC seem connected with the Freemarches to give them some distance from the two main game settings of Ferelden and Orlais but none of them actually linked to Kirkwall. The Freemarches is a collective term given to an area comprising many city states, each with its own governance and character, so a connection to Kirkwall is only tenuous at best. There is nothing that would suggest why some random person from Orlais should be involved as the PC in DA:D unless they start off as an operative in the Inquisition. This would be incongruous for two reasons. First, you could have disbanded the organisation so most of those outside of the Inner Circle would have returned to civilian life. Second, we were meant to be using people that Solas (or his agents) doesn't know. The fact that Solas was able to infiltrate a meeting organised by Charter will have emphasised how former leading figures in the Inquisition are compromised by his knowledge of their identity. It is, incidentally, the reason why Varric should not be heavily involved in the action. Otherwise, sidelining the Inquisitor makes no sense. The only other reason for a person from Orlais turning up in Tevinter as the PC would be if they were taken there as a slave. To be honest, though, I think it would be far more interesting to give us a background from somewhere other than a place we are familiar with. Actually this was true of our background in DAI because, as I point out above, the Freemarches are not Kirkwall. Also, Orlais, Ferelden or Kirkwall would mean nothing to completely new players. In order to get everyone up to speed with the new setting it would actually make more sense to have the new PC from there. Hence my suggestion about possible Tevinter backgrounds. If they go with a trend they did seem to establish in previous games, that of the human PC always being from a noble background that has connections in the setting, then it would almost be a pre-requisite for that person to be from Tevinter, whether mage or mundane. In fact the latter might prove interesting as they would have the opposite problem to a mage noble in the south as in Tevinter their lack of magic would automatically penalise their social standing. Personally, I feel it is about time they had a human background that was not grounded in the nobility but I will not be surprised if they do end up being a noble who has fallen on hard times, may be through their family having fallen foul of Tevinter politics or their home city having been conquered by the Antaam. As for the possibility of us being a Lord of Fortune, they are definitely a Rivain based guild, which is presumably why we never even knew they existed until Tevinter Nights because their modus operandi is in the north and they rarely stray so far south as Ferelden, Orlais or Kirkwall.

In The Missing preview, Harding and Varric are reluctant to involve anyone in their mission to stop Solas. Since we will seemingly be working with Varric in the next game, I think something will happen in the beginning of the game that warrants them to involve our Protagonist. Then the intro with Varric explaining who Solas is will commence.
What could that event be? I don’t know, but I do think it’ll involve Solas doing something terrible in which our Protagonist gains a personal reason to stop him.
Think about it - our protagonist needs to be that “beacon of light.” The companions need someone to believe in, and why would they fight alongside someone who doesn’t have a fire under their belly to stop Solas, beyond the obvious world-ending reasons. I wouldn’t be surprised if the companions also experienced tragedy via Solas, which is why the get involved.

I think something will happen in the beginning of the game that warrants them to involve our Protagonist. Well, if Solas is connected in any way with the disappearances from Marnas Pell, that could be the plot hook because it is our relatives that have gone missing. However, I do wonder if initially our PC will be totally separate from the hunt for Solas and it will only be later that our path crosses with his and we get involved. The Behind the Scenes video said how they will be dealing with problems that those in authority are ignoring. That could include the Antaam advancing across Tevinter (and Antiva, although the Crows do seem to have this covered), problems in the Grey Wardens, issues between the dwarves of the Ambassadoria and Kal-Sharok (or something else dwarf related), the Venatori misusing red lyrium and the strange events connected with Arlathan Forest. Mind you, that is apparently where Varric and Harding are going to in issue 3, plus making connections with a new faction there. We have yet to be given the blurb for issue 4 but it may well be that will reveal the starting point for our PC.

It’s been nearly a decade since Trespasser according to the expanded universe, so they could easily be someone recruited after Solas left this doesn’t know. I mean, we’ve seen this twice now with Vaea and Co and just recently with Miriam and Co. That said, I really hope we don’t start as a member of the Inquisition. Ignoring the pure idiocy of the whole “find people he doesn’t know (we constantly surprised him, people can operate differently, he has an army of fade beings who can spy on everyone in their dreams, etc) as you said that would just be another giant middle finger to people who want the Inquisitor to return as protagonist. Any involvement with the Inquisition should start similarly to the two examples I listed above: people not affiliated with the organization but hired as outside contractors. Later we can join it if the player wishes.

Any involvement with the Inquisition should start similarly to the two examples I listed above: people not affiliated with the organization but hired as outside contractors. I agree that this is the most likely connection. It could also be similar to Half up Front, where it was actually an agent of Solas who used the protagonists to advance their own scheme. Having discovered the deception and thwarted them, at the end they were directed to Varric if they wanted to join the efforts against him as he was apparently running a hub for information in Kirkwall. That made sense considering the Inquisitor had been given a base there. It would also tie in with the latest cinematic. If Solas, or one of his agents, had betrayed us in that way, it would give us a strong motivation to join the fight against him, even without the threat to the world.

Action Action and Action of course. Almost no RPG element besides the character editior and a few dialogues. Maybe even less than DAI. There is no way that Bioware will bring back a slow beginning like some of the Origins. I personal would prefer it but unfortunately this is now a rule that the first hour should not be "boring" for some players so there is of lots of combat in the beginning.
But there has to be a big event which shock the players. DAA had the attack on the keep, DA2 had the escape from Lotherig and DAI the destroyed conclave. So what next? If i have to guess the fleeing from the Qunari because they invaded another city, Skyhold has been destroyed or Solas killed the DA 4 hero´s father´s brother´s nephew´s cousin´s former roommate.

I'm not convinced that starting the game with combat/something exciting is mutually exclusive with starting before the Big Dramatic Event TM. The dao mage origin starts with you being forcibly thrust into the fade where you must battle or otherwise prove yourself to spirits and demons. Shortly after that you must organise a heist for the sake of your childhood friend. The dao dalish elf starts out threatening to kill a group of humans and entering a mysterious ruin filled with dangerous undead and a mysterious artifact, then already dying from exposure to it you fight darkspawn to try and save your friend. They didn't need to start the game half way through the tower of ishal or waking up in Flemeth's hut and being told that "the battle is lost - time to raise your own army, and by the way your were in a battle". You can start with an exciting fight without jumping to after the crisis event/call to adventure. I don't expect them to bring back multiple beginnings since they've talked about that being expensive given most people will only see one*. But I really don't want a beginning like dai, starting after the cool thing happens so I don't even get to see the cool thing in-game and in-character. So I'm out of step with my character cause while they're reacting to what happened I'm just trying to figure out what's happening. That beginning was one of the two reasons Inquisition didn't unseat DAO as my favourite dragon age game (the other being less fun combat). So make me a Gladiator fighting in the arena (willingly or as a slave depending on background/race choice), but after my triumphant tournament win the qunari attack my city, and I must flee - fighting qunari, and deciding whether to aid others, on my way out. Or make me a Lord of Fortune plunging into a dangerous ruin to retrieve an artifact for a mysterious client, fighting my way through walking corpses and traps before finally emerging only to be betrayed by the Solas agent who hired me and left for dead after they take the artifact. Or make me an investigator, justicar or templar depending on class, and start me doing a raid on a suspected venatori hide out. After the cultists have been arrested or killed you find an agent unlike the rest (Fen'harel's) who was after something the cult has. You begin a special investigation on your own, or at the black divines behest. Or any of like a million other better ideas that would start with something exciting but still let me experience the main plot with my character. *though jeez i hope they keep multiple backgrounds even though they won't come with unique playable beginnings, and hopefully more responsiveness to them than dai had, like me1's sidequests but better.

I think part of it to was to maintain the sense of vagueness from those events regarding the Inquisitor's amnesia. It wouldn't have made a lot of sense for them to go 'ok the character has amnesia, maybe you were the villain, maybe this, maybe that,' but then have the player experience those events would've been 'but I, the player, knows Im not the villain.' That may not be enough of an excuse and amensia is a little bit of a weird trope to begin with but there were reasons for it.
Though I also don't think for that very reason this is a particular well they'll dip their feet into again. There have been enough games recently which has shown ways of doing this better than what we have seen without going into that trope.

DAA had the attack on the keep, DA2 had the escape from Lotherig and DAI the destroyed conclave. DAO was hardly boring. Human noble origin: After a few pleasantries, our family estate comes under attack and almost everyone else is massacred; Mage origin: We help with a few problems and then assist our friend (or spy on him) including battles with nasties before our friend is revealed as a blood mage; Dalish origin: We discover an old ruin overrun with darkspawn, our friend disappears and we become infected; City elf origin: Our marriage ceremony is interrupted and our PC or their potential spouse is kidnapped, so breakout or rescue against a keep full of soldiers, plus our cousin is raped. Dwarf caste less origin: Get embroiled in underworld activities, take part in Provings (illegally); Dwarf noble origin: Get a feel for things, then head into Deep Roads, have some combat and get framed for sibling's murder. What was great about this section was that it also eased you into the setting and gave you the background to your particular race/class and how they fit into society but also did have sufficient action to introduce you into that aspect of the game. If anything it was the section connected with Ostagar that slowed things down again and had a lot of filler before they ramped up the action again with the attack of the darkspawn horde. I think the main reason they won't have a variety of origin stories again is that a lot of people only play one race or class, usually human warrior, and so it seemed a waste of resources to invest so much in backgrounds only a minority would ever use. I think it is a pity because I thought that was one of the best aspects of Origins and played all of the origin stories, even if I didn't take all of them through the rest of the game, because I like immersing myself in the lore and this was more interesting than simply reading codices. I felt one of the weaknesses of DAI is that we didn't have the opportunity to attend the Conclave before it went boom. I understand the reason for this narrative wise because of our amnesia about events prior to it going boom but I'd rather they didn't just drop us in it like that again. I think DA2 would have benefited from us establishing our family relations in Lothering before the darkspawn attack, so you felt some connection to the one that dies but given the short development time on the game, it is understandable why they opted for dropping us in it like they did. DAA was different because whilst you could play as a different protagonist if your Hero was dead, it was an expansion to the main game so you didn't need introducing to the setting.

If i have to guess the fleeing from the Qunari because they invaded another city, I thought this was the most likely originally but that was when I thought the invasion would start with the game, whereas it has now been underway for several years. Still, with the Antaam having broken the Llomerryn Accord and attacked Antiva, it is possible we could start there rather than Tevinter. Skyhold has been destroyed or Solas killed the DA 4 hero´s father´s brother´s nephew´s cousin´s former roommate. According to Tevinter Nights, Skyhold is no longer connected with the Inquisition in such a way that this could be the case. If Solas did kill their relative, I think that would more likely be connected with events further north.

So I'm out of step with my character cause while they're reacting to what happened I'm just trying to figure out what's happening As I say above, I think this was deliberate because of the narrative that we suffered from amnesia about events, but I'd rather they didn't do this again. So make me a Gladiator fighting in the arena (willingly or as a slave depending on background/race choice), but after my triumphant tournament win the qunari attack my city, and I must flee - fighting qunari, and deciding whether to aid others, on my way out. This could work for me. Also, it would fit all races and classes apart from mage. Or make me a Lord of Fortune plunging into a dangerous ruin to retrieve an artifact for a mysterious client, fighting my way through walking corpses and traps before finally emerging only to be betrayed by the Solas agent who hired me and left for dead after they take the artifact. This seems a strong contender because any race or class can be a Lord of Fortune and Solas, or his agent, double-crossing you would give you a personal grudge against them that gets you involved in the hunt. This could be a possibility for a mage as an alternative to the Gladiator origin for the other classes, although I think it would be race limited to just human and possibly elf. As hinted in the Behind the Scenes video, likely you go it alone because your superiors won't authorise it.

I agree but regardless of the Origins if they have to make a game like DAO they would start the game at Ostagar before or during the battle. Like i said i would prefer a slower beginning with more dialogue options and story expositions but i am like you all in the minority of players. Or let say this what EA and other publishers want us to believe that the first hour should be pretty exciting and full of actions because otherwise they fear that players would stop playing. I disagree on this because if we look at DAI a longer conclave scene won´t have bore the playerbase as much as the Hinterlands.
Antiva is still wasted for this game especially if this is the beginning. Also i fear that the Qun is bad & evil and Tevinter is good & misunderstood. But if DA 4 really starts in Antiva there it would be weird to play this part as Lord of Fortune after Absolution i kinda dislike them. It would be more interessing if the DAD hero would be a low ranking crow member or something like that. I am aware of this story but Solas could destroy Skyhold and DAD had its shocking opening like the destruction of the first Normandy in ME 2.

My ideas: 1. We are in a region, someone comes to us and says: People have disappeared. We are sent to search for them in the deep roads and stumble over Varric. (In this you only have to change what is spoken and the character which sent you in the deep roads.). Varric help to find the people and in exchange you do something for him in Minrathous. 2. We are the family of a merchant (Orlais background) and help him out. We get under attack. (mage background would be hard to fit in here i think) To get money and get back on the feets you sell your services (like hawke). 3. We are a researcher and have found something strange. We try to tell people in power what we found but they don't want to see it. So we go and find people to help against what is going on.

Nice Ambient Music begins.... Camera pans to a moonlight scene, a shiny bald head in the distance, camera zooms in.
Nice Ambient music fades away, the sound of guttural gobbling sounds begins as the zoom in continues.
Camera slowwwwllllyyyyyy pans around to the front of the person and yes it is Solas, he is eating Inquisitors hand that he stole.
He is gnawing on the bones, then the title flashes up in stylized lettering "The Dread Wolf"
