Forgive me if this idea has already been done or if this type of post isn't allowed here.
I had an idea about how Mass Effect could possibly return from Andromeda, and although controversial, I think this might be a really cool way for the franchise to jump back into the Milky Way in an interesting way and work on a lower budget. I brought up this idea on the Mass Effect 5 thread sometime ago, but after seeing the new Pacific Rim, (which is really good if you like robots beating the shit out of one another 10/10 would see again for John Boyega)
Concept:
An episodic game that takes place between Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3.
Like Pacific Rim 2 and, in some cases, Andromeda, it would feature a younger group of heroes. (I know some people loved seasoned Shepard, I do too believe me, but I think narratively with the concept it would make more sense to have a young crowd- with some older vets sprinkled in, than to have a crew of seasoned badasses. Even ME's cast were relatively green- Tali, Garrus, Ashley, etc.)
Story and Various Ideas:
You're a main character- with two voice actors for either gender and a limited, but concise character customizer. You live on or work in Arcturus Station with the fleet after training. Shepard has just been placed on house arrest, and the Alliance is picking up the pieces before the Reapers arrive en masse.
You work in an elite group, based of of Shepard's original mixed alien race crew as a cross species military initiative- but the ratio is relatively similar to the trilogy and Andromeda- one of each main council species- Asari, Turian, Salarian, possibly even an added quarian mechanic doing their pilgrimage to gain more supplies for the flotilla (which ties into the reveal in Mass Effect 3) However, unlike Andromeda, visits on the citadel and omega introduce you to some fan favorite alien species- Hanar, Drell, Elcor, etc.)
You are a small unit living in barracks who are moved around a lot for off the books Alliance missions- based on your talents in the Alliance Military. However, everyone on the team is trying to one up each other and prove their usage- fearing failure and a future of paperwork filing if they fuck up.
The story will follow closely with the Telltale and DONTNOD/Deck Nine format- really character driven- while also really exploring space and how the player can interact with the environment.
The game will be more linear than a Mass Effect game usually is- however- there will be some slight side missions throughout to really immerse players into the Citadel, Arcturus, and Omega stations- I really think a more grounded experience will be a fresh and more introspective take on Mass Effect. Romance will be there for sure- some shooting levels and some investigation levels.
I was really disappointed that I didn't get to have "moments" with the Andromeda cast. Moments where fear, anguish, confusion, and infighting that flair up and make shit difficult. Hard decisions that have lasting impacts on how someone treats you- as well as moments (like in Life is Strange and Miranda in ME2 for sure) where a character that really didn't like you grows to be closer to you and make the game's experience more rewarding and immersive. LBR- Even in the OT people more often than not really opened up to Shepard relatively quickly.
I think an episodic slow burn of a game would give the writers more character based storylines (which is one thing Bioware can excel at) as well as force a concise way of telling the narrative.
What do you guys think? Do you think Mass Effect would thrive with this format or do you think it would fail?
What types of characters do you think would excel here?
