It came to my attention that Ubisoft is monitoring game chat traffic. Besides being totalitarian in nature and 1984rish, Ubisoft is implementing a plan to change gamer behaviour to remove "unwanted attitudes". Player bans is on the table.
Now, I'm of the opinion that Anthem will have chat. And, my experience with playing Bio MP games is that most players respect one another other than a dew individuals with an open mike and the game audio being played on loud speakers drowning out everything or kids making noise in the background. ... super annoying. However, I only encountered one individual who thought he was Commander in Chief and needed to wash is super potty mouth with vinegar.
My concern is will EA/Bio follow suit if Anthem is successful? Does anyone see this as necessary? I haven't played MEAMP in months but I thought the simple solution was the ability to mute the player (assuming we know who it is)? Of course, once in combat, identifying the individual is almost impossible. Well, perhaps playing enough games we can ID a common denominator.
Thoughts?

It is a necessary, monitoring chat is what a lot of people want instead of the circle jerk of having to report themselves for it can be viewed as the developer being lazy and making the players do the work. Just because you think BioWare might have a respectful playerbase doesn't mean it will be true if there is an open chat. I have seen the swamp behavior of other games for I have zero multiplayer experiences with Ubisoft games, but I think them trying to put a muzzle on it before it gets out of hand is a good thing.

What a colossal waste of manpower. I think the model that most other games use would serve the game just fine (a predefined list of censored words and phrases), with the ability for other players to block and/or report people who get around the filter. No need to reinvent the wheel.

I think the simple ability to mute/block people works fine. In pvp you're in lobbies quite often, in PvE you can find safe spots to view the roster and just do it.
If they really "need" to do anything, just have the setup where one has to switch over to chat if they really want to talk with other players.
Regarding it being hard to find the responsible player in games, I don't see it that way, most games have a mic icon and will show the gamertag/name of said player speaking.

I'm all for chat monitoring. Some of the shit I see in chat in the Dark Zone playing The Division is unbelievable.
The shit I heard via proximity voice chat was even more unbelievable, until I turned it off.

What they're describing in the article seems very feasible and a step forward. Griefers toxic players are a waste of bandwidth anyway.

Getting rid of hateful and cheating assholes? Sounds like a good move. In practice it's going to be more of a threat because there's aren't enough people to monitor everything, and reporting/muting will still be the default action. I'm not sure EA/BioWare would want to commit the resources to active monitoring because (particularly with BioWare games) these have not been PVP driven.

Do you think tech is advanced enough to filter and analyze voice chat for abuse? I mean affordable commercial scale - not the secret service stuff. I kinda doubt it.

So far the Mute button has worked pretty damn well for me, not that it was required all that often. I don't feel like I need to outsource the two or three mouse clicks required for that.

Quote from article: "Chat monitoring has already been underway since mid-March, but Ubisoft also wants to give players the ability to more directly moderate their interactions by allowing anyone to mute individual players' text chat in addition to voice, which has been silenceable for some time." Lol? I don't even... That is some groundbreaking tech. Newsworthy stuff. Amazing.

True. However, even when playing in the co-op combat?
For example: In MEAMP I sometimes found myself jumping in as the 4th guy while a game was in progress only to discover somebody's mike was live with loud background noises / combat music that it drowned out my PC's audio.

Hmpf !
I also thought it included voice chat.... seeing how the Anthem trailer used it.
Still, come to think about it, Bio/EA may not be able to use any voice/text filter if the comm design is P2P = decentralized. P2P is one PC acting as a server for the other three. I suspect Hub activity is controlled from EA servers but once you jump into co-op combat .... game stat data is the only stuff sent to EA server(s), imo.

Ye, servers are for matchmaking and transaction verification. Peer-to-peer is handled between the players. Setting another connection on top for voice chat? Possible, I guess - Discord works fine enough with other games. But honestly - how would contemporary stuff filter out all the international abuse and swearwords with accents and all? That must be super sophisticated hard and software - if you want that screened in real-time, too. Probably more intensive to compute than the game itself.

The tech exists at the consumer level -- just try, "Hey Siri, go fuck yourself!" with an iPhone. NSFW vid here: Replace "Siri" with Cortana or Google as needed. But it's expensive to implement and probably not a priority for games, when mute/block is so much easier and cheaper.

Assuming the game is co-op with friends, all of this may be moot. Filtering, text or voice, is only necessary with pubs and randoms, or PvP because, let's face it, even your friends can get salty if you t-bag them too often.
My prediction is that, absent PvP, only your invited friends, or friends that have join-on-you permission, can talk to you with voice chat.

Western developers are so afraid of that dreadful "Stranger Culture" (whatever that is) that they are willing to wipe chat functionality completely. Destiny 2 did that where did it landed them?
It's not easy to find a cooperative players amongst randoms, and without chat you basically can just not buy this game if you can't convince you frinds to buy it too.

Well, now, that's a thought.
I tend to agree with you. A chat option when you can "invite your friends" makes sense and seems a necessity either in PvE or PvP.

But isn't that rather an asset allocated to the Bioware brand by EA. I kinda consider Edmonton as core. And Montreal, but that is gone now. But point taken anyway. Hope for text chat still persisting. A bit.

Funny thing about chat in ME3MP - it does exist, and you can access it. But only on PC - you need to edit your config files slightly. It's just a leftover feature from Unreal Tournament 3 that BioWare didn't wiped out completely, but rather removed any bindings for it.
