Is Templar a good option for non demon combat? For example in the descent? Vs darkspawn and qunari
Also watching a let’s play and there was a comment that paybackstrike. Is much better than people realize and I got the feeling it should be more of a fix for s&s Warriors

This is from memory because I haven't played in three years: templars are good against pretty much anything because they can prime-detonate (Wrath of Heaven -> Spell Purge) without needing help. This is effective against any enemy, it's just more effective against demons.
I have no idea/don't remember what Paybackstrike is, sorry.

The difficulty with Payback Strike is that the AI party members want to use it BEFORE they get hit, not after. That decreases its effectiveness.
But if you personally are playing a sword and shield character, then it's a decent ability.

Yeah-been trying it. Works well but there’s a lot of timing involved and you have to be targeted first
As a follow up- the descent enemies seem to be the biggest damage sponges in game. Will Templar abilities even affect darkspawn?if so are base abilities a better option

Templar is my favorite multiplayer non mage character. Wombo combo does wonders against all factions, SP included. Payback Strike is also good to get back on your feet fast when you are knocked down; it doesnt trigger cooldown if you don't hit enemy, so you don't need to spend points in Combat Roll.

They're not weak to anything and they tend to take a ton of damage. Templar abilities don't work on darkspawn with the exception of disrupting the spells of emissaries.
