Dragon Age: Armada
This is a concept for Dragon Age 4 I think would be really great for the series. Dragon Age Inquisition introduced some unique new game play to the series especially with the way we has at least some control of a Major faction in Thedas. Wartable missions, Advisors, and Skyhold while not perfect in execution they were still parts that made Inquisition great. The series has its fair share of factions or guilds that have heavily influenced its history. In Origins we were a part of the Grey Wardens, which because there was only 2 who survived we also had to rebuild the Fereldan Grey Wardens. Dragon Age 2 while not a part of any faction we did witness the start of the collapse 3 major factions in Thedas( Chantry, Templars , Circle). And of course Inquisition we take part in leading the resurrection of ancient faction. So for Dragon Age 4 I thought what better faction to fully introduce into the Dragon Age games then the Raiders of the Walking Sea or the Felicisima Armada.
That’s right I am recommending the protagonist of Dragon Age 4 to be one of the captain of the Raiders. A pirate themed Dragon Age game would seem like a huge left turn for the series but given certain events that maybe taking place story wise it actually wouldn’t be too far off. With the series going to North Thedas the series gets a chance in my opinion to reintroduce some story elements that really make a Dragon Age game a Dragon Age game. Keeping the new ideas introduced in Inquisition but expanded to be used in a more flexible fashion being The Captain of a Raider ship.
Reasons why I picked the Raiders:
• The Qunari - Heavy influence on why the Raiders goes to the Qunari. If the Qunari Invasion is a major plot point in DA4 which I feel has been teased little by little each game. It makes sense to make the protagonist apart of a faction that has once dealt a heavy blow to the Qunari in the past. Similar to The Blight with the Warden in Origins and the Breach with the Inquisitor it will follow the theme of a faction rising up to once again put a old enemy down. Also Qunari have a lot of naval aspects that should not be looked over.
• Mass Effect 2 – Mass Effect 2 is another major influence for this game playing for a villainous faction but we decided what actions we take. Also recruiting the companions was a cool feature I think can work in this game. Having these companions also give us ship upgrades based off our influence with them.
• New Areas New Heroes – Explore Seheron, Tevinter, and the seas between them during a dangerous time.
Also Dragon Age is a series that is unique because it highlights various heroes during the Dragon Age of Thedas. Most of whom have been unlikely but all stepped up when it was time.
• Independency – In Dragon Age we are often the unbias party of Thedas at least starting out while our character is given the freedom to give opinions or influence others based on our own beliefs we want for our character not the factions itself. All of our factions have been the neutral party outside of the clear goal they each have. But that freedom is important to have when character building in a world like Dragon Age. With all that said the Raiders have a greater range of Freedom that neither the Grey Wardens nor Inquisition has to offer. The Armada is a collection of various Raider ships with each ship having its own Captain or if hints about Isabela is true then Admirals also who command a fleet possibly. But either way there is no true leader, while a man named “Ser” Tadeus is rumored to be the leader they don’t function like the Inquisition.
• Mobile Skyhold – The Ship will be set up somewhat similar to Skyhold. You see being a Raider Captain allows us to be a part of a large organization but still focus on smaller scale more personal aspects because we lead our own way. That means Flags, Weaponry, Ship Parts all become customizable as we go thru the game just like Skyhold. Even deciding on our own Jolly Roger if you decide you don’t want to run with the classic Raider logo.
• Antihero feel – Inquisition kept us mostly on the good path with our character choices and decisions, by which I mean in Origins the Warden, can potentially come off as way more evil then the Inquisitor. Now of course neither Character is truly evil but the nature of the Inquisition Order vs the Grey Warden order I feel created those limits. Being a blood mage is one because it’s so lore breaking in the setting. So to keep up with the lore being a pirate Captain we can now have a legit option to have more of that scoundrel hero feel if wanted.
• Chart your own Path – Speaking of morality being a Raider doesn’t mean you’re set towards a certain morality. The Armada invites the opportunity to be a protagonist that stops slave ships or establish trade routes with certain towns and cities due to heroic achievements that would increase our influence with them. Or you can be racket out towns and villages you helped, setup smuggling routes on cities. Walking the very grey area it means to be a hero also connects to another situation at hand.
• The heroes no one expected – The Inquisitor pretty much hinted they couldn’t go after Solas themselves but they can always collab with a group of heroes Solas would never expect to stop him. Dragon Age always has a setup of each chapter bringing a bigger threat or crisis. If lets say Act 1 we deal with the country civil dispute like we did with the Landsmeet, Saving Kirkwall from Arishok, and Winter Palace. Act 2 settle the Qunari-Tevinter War then from the first two acts our name would become more famous and draw the attention of the Inquisition based on our past feats of heroism. This also could be the point Solas starts the Elf rebellion that we could see brewing throughout the game.
• Advisors and Wartable – Wartable was cool ideas why not convert it to us going to the haul of the ship looking at the map surrounded by our companions and advisors. Personally I would include Isabela as one of the Advisors being tied to a lot of Qunari plots. Dorian could being not only a advisor but the one updating the Inquisitor on our progression leading to the collab. And on other third new character. The Advisors wont really be apart of the crew but they could be a part of an alliance we have with them working towards a common goal.
• Exploration – Raiders are not bound to the sea. In fact in Inquisition I noticed that they explore far enough inland to have their logo spread through Thedas. Meaning they explore dungeons and caves keeping that adventure aspect alive in Dragon Age. Exploring Dwarven Thiags and Tevinter Ruins of course also returns the payoff. Inquisition somewhat took away epic rewards for explore dungeons now with Armada the rewards should not just be lore related but scale of epicness most be worthy of a pirate exploring.
• Origins – That’s right I promote a return of Origins. Origins was a great way to not just create our character with a lore friendly back story that was playable and allowed us to shape our protagonist within a culture that is being introduced to us. Having a origin that has us play as a Mage Human Noble(a twist from the Non mage Human noble of Origins) apart of a Atlus family, A city elf that is a slave, dwarf Ambassador etc. These Origins will give us a glimpse into Tevinter as well as a intro into how we became a Raider Captain. Not just that but via wartable our Origin Quest can continue throughout the story that held’s rewards such as exclusive ship cosmetics unique for each origin as well as various armor and weapons tied to our character and the choices we make.
• Return of Thief and Assassin missions – Want more favor with Assassin guilds take Crow contracts or want to rob the riches or artifacts of a Tevinter Magister? Then just like in Origins we have a chain of missions that involved breaking into mansions.
There is much more to this concept but this is the base idea. I think a Dragon Age Game using things from old games and reworking it to make the game feel more alive. Along with using a pirate theme would be a unique addition to the series that comes with a breath of fresh air. It keeps the dark tone Dragon Age is known for while still allowing room for the lighthearted and brighter moments that helps the tone of the game flow and stay true to the series. There is some tweaks here and there but this is the design I would love most for the next dragon age. Besides who wouldn’t want to be a pirate mage captain.
