Kotaku - Sources: Fallout: 76 Is An Online Survival RPGkotaku.com/sources-fallout-76-is-an-online-survival-rpg-1826425333Originally prototyped as a multiplayer version of Fallout 4 with the goal of envisioning what an online Fallout game might look like, Fallout: 76 has evolved quite a bit over the past few years, those sources said. It will have quests and a story, like any other game from Bethesda Game Studios, a developer known for meaty RPGs like Skyrim. It will also feature base-building—just like 2015's Fallout 4—and other survival-based and multiplayer mechanics, according to those sources. One source cautioned that the gameplay is rapidly changing, like it does in many online “service” games, but that’s the core outline. Fallout: 76 is in development not just at Bethesda Game Studios’ main office, in Maryland, where the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4 were made, but also at the company’s newest branch, in Austin, according to our sources.
Does this sound kind of familiar?

What giubba said^. All the "insiders" are pretty much saying "PvP survival game" which is basically the total opposite of Anthem storybased co-op.

That is my understanding from what I have been reading as well. I wonder what the official boards are like for if people here don't like Anthem because its a multiplayer BioWare game I wonder what fans of Bethesda games are like because this is nothing like what the previous Fallout games are like unless you modded the game to have the survival aspects in.

Maybe the mood shifted

I've seen a few people go "awesome" because they like survival games and liked Fallout 4. Also, every time Bethesda release a new TES/Fallout game, there is a bunch of people demanding a multiplayer mode.
Saying that, with Rage 2 and now this, I think Bethesda has run out of ideas.

While I'll be passing on this game, I loved the music in this trailer. ~Country rooooads, take me hooooome, to the place, I beloooong~ I'm bitterly disappointed Bethesda's next game is one that further tramples on Fallout's grand legacy and not another edition in their sims in fantasy-land series It won't compete with Anthem though ~West Virginia, mountain momma~

As far as Fallout 76 itself if it is going to focus on survival aspects its going to be a pass for me, that is a genre of games I don't enjoy playing. If they are optional in the game like how you can add mods to have that type of experience I probably will still give the game a shot. After thinking about it the question I am having is mod support, for if it is an online game I don't see mods working unless it can somehow verify people are using the same mods not to be at an advantage. Then if it doesn't have mods how are people going to react to the problems that cannot be fixed unless Bethesda gets around to it.

I hope anthem is good, because it appears every developer out there is losing their damn minds on how to make games now days. I wouldn't throw the developers under the bus for what is happening, its people at the executive level that are bouncing from trend to trend to try and maximize profits by going for the "in" thing. BioWare jumped on the open world/less structured style of game, Square Enix went to more Western RPG gameplay, Bethesda is going for the survival style, and numerous games jumped on the battle royal craze. Its happening more and more or at least seems that way because there are less games being released each year now because its taking more people to develop games now.

I hope anthem is good, because it appears every developer out there is losing their damn minds on how to make games now days. BioWare jumped on the open world/less structured style of game Jumped? DAI and MEA are less "open" than pre-ME2 games. BG1 is pretty much one big map split into smaller ones and the only thing "blocked" is the access to the city until a certain point in the main quest. BG2 allows you to access 90% of the game content once you are out of the starter dungeon. KoTOR and ME allow you to tackle the main plot and side quests outside the final in whatever order you want once you get your "title" (Jedi/Specter). ME2 once past Freedom's Progress is practically wide-open, outside getting the recruiting missions in chunks. The only linear games BioWare has made is ME3, Jade Empire and NWN main story.

If it weren't for being able to mod the skyrim series and FO series the way we have, I don't think they would be nearly as popular as they have been. Make it multiplayer without any significant modding ability and they are setting themselves up for failure. They aren't exactly known for bug free games, but are usually saved by the modding community. Just like Anthem, I have no interest in playing an online fallout type game, survival or otherwise. Will just have to watch this one closely.

Its been nearly two decades since I played the BG games so I will take your word for those. For me to feel a game is more then a structured experience there needs to be more then order you can complete non-critical missions. The big one is being like a sandbox and it sounds like that is what the Baldur's Gate games were and probably the Deep Road experience of Dragon Age: Origins. Yes you get to pick what order you can complete missions in, but the primary missions are all structured to trigger one right after another with no real sandbox style exploration for anything.

The ‘make less, large budget, action oriented, light story’ products is not just the business dejour of video games but also more ‘traditional’ medias like movies. It’s also a model that has been around a while now.
I’m not sure what fallout 76 will be but arguably Anthem follows the trend while 76 seems to be partially following a trend (multi player? Survival?) but also bucking a trend (lower budget, quicker release). Anthem is also a new IP designed to fill a role while 76 is bethesda cannibalizing its old IP for unknown reasons.
Funny that bethesda is the one saying it is tired of the elder scrolls/fallout cycle and yet they keep returing to their past games (skyrim re-releases, sequels to older IPs, reskinning fallout 4) while BioWare seems less fatigued with their bread and butter IPs but are focusing on a new one at the expense of their main IPs.
But who knows. Maybe Fallout 76 will be a dating sim where you also do a breeding program a la pokemon and then have your new generations of colonists fight in glorified dog fighting matches. Or maybe its an agriculture simulator but also you have to fight off mutant hillbillies.

Heh. At least Fallout will have some lore behind it instead of psuedo-scientific psuedo-religious bullshit behind it.
