Especially vs the remnant! I'm sure many will disagree but going on the roofs unless the WHOLE group are all on the roofs makes that map twice as hard to play. All that usually happens is that one or maybe two people go up there drawing up all the dangerous units up high like the beamers and the killer robots who then proceed to rain down hell on the rest of the team who can't see the enemy until they are either dead or lost their shields. You do not have to camp the map in any one spot but it is way easier to control the map if everyone stays on the mid to lower levels. Or if you are going to play the upper level almost every one needs to be up there. Come at me bros!

Agreed. What really bugs me is the kett guys with miniguns that will constantly jump up and down off the roofs, somehow completely avoiding any gunfire you throw at them like they get iframes or something while jumping.

I hate it when players go all the way up there and try to camp. 99% of time they are constantly getting killed and after a while I stop trying to rescue them.

I'm often up there, just as on top of the columns the map has. Now, I don't camp a lot but I do enjoy the height differences of this map...

I used to play exclusively on the mid and lower levels. Now, I mostly play up top, come down for the objectives. But if someone decides to join me on one perch, I move to one of the other perches or go down below. I've had all three folks try to join me in one perch location … I guess they can't get enough hack and upload objectives … so I move to the mid and lower levels.
Some folks I run with use the tactic of one person on each of the three main perches, with one running down below to play cleanup. If I happen to be running a melee character or a close in fighter, I'll be the "goat" while the others can be the overwatch. It works. Especially on enable objectives or retrievals. On objectives, they will focus on the big critters, which tends to draw the little critters toward my teammates, leaving me mostly unhindered in doing the objectives. Also, killing big critters (other than the wave 6 Fiend on gold) doesn't cause another big critter to spawn, where shooting the little critters during an objective has the nasty effect of causing the little critters respawn near the objective I'm trying to do (this is true on all maps, not just Icebreaker).
So ... it depends. Don't cluster together. One sniper providing top cover for the rest of the team is probably enough (I do that a lot when I pug). Help with the objectives. Don't be an idiot and get yourself killed on the perch ... if you can't survive up there, don't go up there.
I use the Krogan Engineer, the Angara Exemplar, the Angara Insurgent, the Salarian Architect, the Turian Havoc, the Human Artificer and the Human Commando with a lot of success. All but the Exemplar and Commando have pets, which help protect the character. The Exemplar's combo does an awesome job, creates a stagger point and has such a quick CD (I run him with a power efficiency booster), it's a good substitute for a pet. The Commando's singularity and her warp are also quite effective at disabling interlopers. I take what the map and the pug give me.
I don't play Platinum, so it's quite possible that none of this applies to a Platinum match.

I do like to toss my assault turret up there when I'm playing my engineer, those columns give it an awesome field of fire and it hardly ever gets destroyed by the enemy. I'll end up running around though while the turret covers me from above.

In my experience, asshole Annointed will camp out on the roofs (especially that really hard to reach one in the corner) as long as you're battling outdoors. Other units will end up there, but it's usually the Annointed and their death hoses that get to me. Observers just do what they want anyway. Float around. Phase through walls. Swivel to target you with 100% accuracy.

Oh god yes, this was something that pissed me off so much when PUGging, especially considering they generally sucked badly enough that they would fail to hold it on Silver, let alone Gold/plat where they would "try", just a whole lot of dying and finishing waves solo.

I'm often up there, just as on top of the columns the map has. Now, I don't camp a lot but I do enjoy the height differences of this map... I often jump to the center building roof, from there to the silo roof, from there to the highest point of the map, and from there to either of the two high towers in the middle near LZ. Love it - you can succesfully get rid of many enemy units from the highpoints near LZ. Of course this area isnt to be used on platinum...

Enemies are actually pretty good at flanking and creating overlapping fields of fire in meamp. If you find any map seems hard, regardless of what your teammates are doing, it's probably because you are in a bad location.
Generally speaking the outer boundaries of each map are the best locations, because enemies cannot spawn behind you. The best locations though typically share 3 traits:
- Enemies will only spawn in a 180 degree arc or less and from exactly one direction - You have good cover from all angles of attack - You have at least 2 escape routes, and these routes have at least some bits of cover as opposed to just wide open exposed space with multiple angles of attack.
I'd suggest that if you are finding Icebreaker hard while your teammates are camping the roof, you are in a position that does not qualify for some or all of the above conditions.
Me3mp was a lot better at communicating to the player that your position sucks because movement was a lot more restrictive and you would just get rolled when you made a mistake. meamp makes it so easy to get into and out of bad positions that a lot of the time you don't even realize you made a positioning mistake.

A long time ago (back early last year at the start of ME:A MP, I camped up there often. I learned (after many deaths) that constant repositioning is the only true defence there. If those players who die up there stick around, they should get the idea soon enough about those spots there.
However, like Scathane, I now camp on the central column (the one in front of the bottom of the back ramp; towards the open area) on my Kineticist against any enemy on Gold or less as it gives my Kineticist unparalled view and ability to Pull/Throw/detonate or shoot enemies whilst being in full cover and a high % chance to ignore staggering by enemies capable of doing so (angle of attack often hits terrain of the column and is too far to produce the stagger effect). By being there you effectively lock out one third of the map on Gold or less from spawning in the open area of the map. Giving everyone an easier time in the map there with low APEX scores whilst you still join in contributing to the run.
Again, all of this is from experience and trial and error. You can't teach new players to constantly look both ways that you need in Platinum for example, as it's almost not necessary until Platinum difficulty (where it's essential). So it should really just be a matter of time until they get the idea of what's needed to play well there (and camping at the top sniper spots aren't ideal except for certain kits and styles of play). Hope some of them stay and get better (we can do with more players).
