Fact of the matter is too many folks are using the "authenticity" line to also smack "SJW/diversity" claims as well, almost interchangably with some pretty sexist language. I don't think that matters. Engage the arguments, not the one making them, that's the whole issue here. You are repeating the same mistake I pointed out before, you are assuming that arguments are being made in bad faith. And while I'm sure that many arguments ARE being made in bad faith, *from both sides of the debate*, if you are interested in any kind of rational dialogue you have to let your assumptions and prejudice go. And because most people don't do that it resulted in the current political environment. Basically it's another version of "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind". Mind you, that doesn't mean that you need to be naive, but if someone's first reaction to the mildest of criticism is to start screeching about misogyny (like the aforementioned female game dev on twitter), all you are really doing is helping generate more toxicity and ill will. You won't make the "gaming community" a more pleasant place by acting like an authoritarian asshole. People don't tend to respond well to that. I should also point out, the EA argument is more steeped in truth than we give it credit. The Battlefront issue, for example, we need to remember that it is a licensed product and Disney is extremely controlling of how that license is utilized. Folks speculated on this and we will sadly have no confirmation, but considering their track record of controlling their I.P carefully (to the point where Disney is one of the reasons why its taken so damn long for more Kingdom Hearts games) I would not be surprised if a note was "no pink darth vader" from their side. I think you are missing my point here. There are plenty of ways you can use to make visual customization in such a game without breaking anything about the lore. For example, there are many variants of Storm-Trooper armor in the SW lore, there are many cool-looking aliens as well. Something like that would sell like crazy if other MMOs are any indications, but it just wasn't "all the money, now" I suppose. As to WW2, I presume you are aware of tangential learning right? Or self-education? Video games are very powerful at doing that, be it a reference in a name or a simulation of a time period. The best games, the ones with the biggest reach, are not always the ones with the most authenticity in that way. It's why a game like Verdun is niche, vs Battlefield 1 which is massive appeal. Thing is, so long as we get a percentage who do learn tangentially, it is valuable regardless of how close to the truth it is. So I don't worry about it, to be honest, because it will always be there, the truth of what the war was like. The only difference is how the story of the war will be told. Over and over again. That's good in theory, but Hollywood had already proven how easy it is to make people believe things about history or "realism" even when they are pure BS, sure, some people do follow-up to check the real history, etc. but I suspect that most people don't. The thing is, there's no real reason NOT to stick to the facts when it comes to the portrayal of the world etc. People who play a game about WW2 usually have some interest in the setting, you literally have nothing to lose by making an attempt to stay faithful to the facts. (aside from gameplay at least, but when it comes to that the separation is done for a very good reason) That's the thing, most arguments are made in bad faith, and they are well aware of that because the argument doesn't matter. What matters is their feeling of being right/superior/powerful or what have you. It doesn't mean we shouldn't stop trying to debate, but knowing where the playing field is for the majority moves us along to a better discussion. We need to recognize that a bit more, especially in a galvanized, very tribalist sort of environment. That would not only help the gaming community, but push us to be a lot more aware of our own flaws. See, like it or not, the sort of muddling we see with how we communicate does contribute to the "toxicity." I also understood your point, but that is again kind of held back by the parent company still. They just released clone wars faction recently I believe, with new heroes and those styled weapons and troopers and logos and what not. It was a free update, but I would bet that such content was held so they can release it as a major update down the line, versus restricting it to a faction. That kind of fits the M.O of the Battlefront series as well, it was always the factions being separated to preserve "authenticity" ironically enough. The sort of skin changes they did were just slight variations of each faction, and alien skins for the rebels and non-empire groups. So it again is kind of stuck in this catch-22.

Leaving this here for context, and well, entertainment. Mass Effect Andromeda mentioned at 5:35 Battlefield V mentioned at 6:03 If I ever watched YouTube I'd definitely want to follow her. All great points she made.

The game devs snuck most of that stuff in under the radar for me. It usually had to be pointed out by some vocal minority railing about some B.S. they didn't like, but would then inevitably turn to some "diversity" (or subset) agenda as the underlying cause. All you really have to do is mention Anita Sarkisian to trigger that crowd. To be fair, she should be flogged. I despise her and everything she represents. She's probably among the most divisive people out there. Do I think she deserved threats of death or rape? No. That's horrendous that people get that worked up about it. But then she starts spouting that everything is sexist, racist and homophobic. As a gay person, I dislike her intensely. She's not, IMO, helping me out. Instead, she's moved us more toward the black and white thinking we have today. ("You're with me completely or you're against me." - and, yes, I've personally encountered this.)
Diversity isn't the problem. The problem is making it a "thing". Shit, I caught flack for not wanting brown and black stripes added to the gay flag from a straight, white woman. It's like, wtf, bitch. I was actually told I didn't understand. Fuck that. Go put a pink stripe on the black flag first. Then we'll talk. Everything isn't sexist, racist and homophobic. If I'm understanding her correctly, I'm actually all of those things. Me, a gay guy, am homophobic, and I've been 100% out of the closet since 1992. If someone is homophobic toward me, I tell them to fuck off. It's been working just fine for me 26 years now without her "defending" me.
