It's been a very, very long time since I've been in Multiplayer. Even the game itself, had to remember the controls and remind myself what characters I was playing. Turns out it was the Turian Havoc cause the Flak Cannon is fun to use. But then I started noticing things.
First thing, matchmaking was almost impossible, it seemed like barely anyone is playing anymore. And those who are have insanely high Apex Ratings while mine is around 800. I also saw all the new weapons and special variants of them, but they're all Rares and the only real way to have a chance at them are the 100k Arsenal Packs, or the 500k Jumbo. And the only real satisfying way to grind points to buy them is to play Gold matches, which is nearly a bit too much for my stature. Basically all I do is spray and pray with the Piranha, which is really good compared to the others I have. Using an AR in this difficulty is pointless as the dps isn't nearly high enough and Sniper Rifles are only good for the first one or two hits before the rest of the spawns charge you. After grinding several Gold matches tonight I ended up paying cash for just one Jumbo, just to see what it'd give me. Of course it was disappointing. Also used the 300k points I earned on several Arsenals and I still didn't get any of the "best" weapons I read up on like the Hurricane. And then to top the night I went and reset my Turian after she got to 20 and I had forgotten when you do that it takes away all the skill points so she lost all her powers.
So a few things. How does one come across these special variants like the Concussive, Siphon, etc? Also, why is it that I noticed many other players had a ton more survivability than I did? Everyone I matched with seemed a ton more tanky than I was and some matches I was the only one that kept getting downed.
Special weapon variants become available in packs after base weapon hitting X rank. So, to get Hurricane Siphon, for example, you first need Hurricane X. Which is... troublesome. Resetting powers - personally, I recommend doing it for characters of rank X and above - it means more skill points at level 1. About survivability - Havoc can be built for taking less damage while in the air. Being on ground, you must take cover. Otherwise, there are ways for characters to build up tankiness - skills/passives to take less damage, skills/passives to boost shields, skills/passives/siphon weapons to regenerate health... For example, Krogan Vanguard: Fortify gives damage reduction, Charge restore shields, Rage passive regenerates health (and gives damage reduction). Right now I don't think that Havoc is balanced to be taken to Gold without good Siphon weapons and/or support teammates.
I would grind and buy Advanced packs until you max your Uncommon weapons and get a Cyclone Siphon. That’s one of the better Assault Rifles and a quality Siphon variant. Pair that with your Havoc Trooper, and you’ll be surviving longer in matches and dishing out decent damage.

You'll grind your ass off for finishing the common and uncommon stuff. Then you get a variant for that shitty stuff and you realize you'll unlock all the variants for your shitty stuff before you even get to the decent ones. And then you just stop bothering and play something else.

If so.. at least one cannot go back to ME3MP anymore
For me the "grind" wasnt grind, as I enjoyed and still enjoy the gameplay so much I play it every day. The new levels and weapons were a side product, and I got good

On squishiness... The fitness tree is great for some characters, good for most. Having the ability to regenerate health via siphon weapons also makes a big difference, which also explains some of the gap you see. Mainly I think people just learn where they can afford to stand and not be exposed from multiple sides... While also having more killing power in general.
On pirahna and spray and spray... It has a terrible spread. You need to use a choke mod (the bronze one for 40% accuracy will do). It also helps to use it on characters with accuracy bonuses. You need a second gun, that is accurate.
On being squishy on Gold... Nobody you run across cares. The only reason most APEX over 30,000 players need you there is so they arent flanked too much. Just do you best to stay alive, avoid going to the extraction too early, and don't die in exposed areas. Gold in most matches is a race to see who can clear a spawn point first for the first couple waves. Keep doing golds for now. Nothing less is worth it in terms of credits per time.

Even with a maxed Fitness line on the Havoc just popping my head out to return fire for a second made me lose my shields because the Gold enemies hit so hard.
The Piranha does have bad spread past say five meters (I'm American so I'm guessing) but it really saves the day when overwhelmed in close quarters, and I do use the Choke on it as well. It combined with the Havoc's weapon buff power really helps taking down boss enemies as well. If I could put an full auto mod on the Crusader like I did in SP then that would be my go to Shotgun though, the Crusader is so nice but crap RoF.

The enemies will hit hard on gold/plat, but for that, shoot from the cover without popping head up. You'll learn the "flow of the battle" when to pop up and so on...
Heading to MP now ->

If you're buying advanced packs, you'll eventually unlock and max out the Krogan Engineer. She's a very capable kit that has very high durability. Same with Krogan Vanguard, but that kit is a little more difficult to use and doesn't have good powers against armored enemies.

Or you try and search for a match. After nearly 15 minutes, you eventually drop into a gold game in which undead enemies teleport and try to kill you and your powers have to be attempted 3 times for them to actually work. You eventually get sick of it and decide to just play this one match and leave. After another near 10 minute wait you finally get a decent host only this time they're apparently allergic to Apex missions. After a couple matches everyone leaves and you say "fuck it" and go play something else.

First thing, matchmaking was almost impossible, it seemed like barely anyone is playing anymore. And those who are have insanely high Apex Ratings while mine is around 800...
Matchmaking is fine...

The other day I tried to play a gold match. Ended up in a lobby with two new comers who had decided to take on a mission with the "one life to life" modifier. No thanks.

One Year Later and I finally managed to survive platinum round without using ANY consumables at all, and it was weakened team Juggernaut, PAW, Piranha, +30 Shields. I was in tears

You’re one step closer to doing that Platinum solo I know you can do!

I really miss my Quarian Engineer in ME3.
If you are on PC, friend me on Origin. I'm hanskey. We'll play some Gold/whatever.
As another fellow who recently rejoined the field, there are a shit-ton of new common and uncommon characters/weapons/mods since you and I last played. Once I learned that, I took a day of buying basic packs to get all my common characters to Rank XX (took 500,000+ points) and now I'm grinding the Technical Mods packs and Advanced packs, and I guess I'll be doing that for a few million credits before buying anything that will guarantee netting a Rare. Getting to Rank XX on all my common characters (especially the Human Adept) helped, plus a few build guides.
As a random update I am buying Expert packs as of several weeks aga, because I've maxxed everything of less than Gold rarity across the board.
I was about to write "that was fast!" ... then I realized your previous post was 2018.
And, if I could go back a year, I probably would have advised against Technical Mods packs. Personal preference, but I find the vast majority of the weapon mod variants to be a waste. And even if not, far, far too much clutter in my inventory screens for meager (if any) benefit.
The grind in ME:A is crazy. But to be honest, I actually got to "semi"-maxed sub-UR (meaning all Br/Silver/Gold items to at least Level X, all Br/Silver characters to XX), far far faster than on my (many) ME3 MP alts.
