A very interesting interview with EA's VP of Strategic Growth Matt Bilbey (Gamesindustry.biz) www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-08-07-streaming-will-happen-just-a-matter-of-when-eaBilbey also shared another interesting tidbit in the interview. While discussing the ever-growing trend of players creating their own content in games, he suggested that EA’s now ubiquitous Frostbite engine is being upgraded to allow the creation of user-generated content.
Working with EA Chief Design Officer Patrick Söderlund and his team, if we’re able to give accessibility and a level of creation within our games for kids or adults to create their own content, I think that’s probably a bigger opportunity over the next 10 years than us saying we’re going to do a PvZ movie. That will inspire a completely new generation or demographic into gaming, who will want to create rather than play and compete. And EA Chief Technology Officer Ken Moss and his team are looking at how we can continue to evolve Frostbite to allow that creation opportunity for our games.
While Bilbey didn’t provide a timeframe on when that might happen, it’s quite the news for all those Battlefield and Dragon Age/Mass Effect fans who’ve been denied the opportunity to have mods due to Frostbite’s limitations.
If EA enabled user-generated content in those games, players would be able to enjoy far greater longevity. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about this soon.Hmm... [HASH]DAT I'm not even a big user of mods - but if this ends up happening and there is no 'silliness' around how it gets implemented - this is a very, very promising sign.

[HASH]DAT * Vietnam Creation Club flashbacks* No way EA will waste efforts on moddable Frostbite without wanting something in return, or just "acquire" Frosty Tool Suite under copyright law to ease implementation. Sounds to me like they want a Minecraft-esque sandbox game with no content and just sell mods.

*mutters something about better hair* On a more serious note, though - I hope this does happen. I don't use mods much myself, but they're an excellent metric of player engagement. Assuming the support of them is implemented correctly....

Assuming the support of them is implemented correctly.... Mod support is literally my #1 feature request for Frostbite. I had long since given up hope this was ever going to happen, so this just made my day. I agree though, it will largely depend on how it's handled. There are certainly some... undesirable routes they could take here. But for now, even though it's probably years away still, Hrungr's a happy camper.

So, EA are going to rip players off with their own version of CC then? Are they even trying anymore?

This didn't read as full-on mods, to me.
It was a larger thought that stemmed from a remark about Plants Versus Zombies, which is obviously kid-friendly. So, Bilby (Executive Vice President of Strategic Growth) says,
Then moves to,
It might turn out that this is more like Minecraft or Mario Maker and other similar things. These are games that feature tools that allow you to create within the game, which are different from player-made mods, created outside the game, that alter the look, feel, or function of the game itself.
In other words, USE CAUTION and don't read too much into the quote.

Besides even if they do this I doubt that the next Dragon Age game will have it for the way they were talking about something like Play Anywhere is that its something they have to be incorporating from the very start of development while that post talks about a decade.

Reads the other posts..... ah crap they'll monetize it. Yep exactly what I came in here to say, but I'm a pessimist and I can't shake the thought that EA is just seeing $$$. I do hope I'm wrong though, so I'll wait to pass any judgment and if implemented well it will really add replay value for me.
I love modding my games but if I have to pay for better hairstyles I'll be pissed and they won't see a dime fall out of my pockets for this.

Given that Inquisition and, to my understanding, ME:A are pretty heavily moddable as-is at this point, this sounds to me like a scheme to get current mod tools out of the picture on patent violations or something similar.

Everybody wants to get a piece of that Skyrim pie There's no doubt in my mind that the longevity of the title had a large role in industry's move towards live service/lifetime extension model, and considering how big of an impact mods have on it, I'm unsurprised by EA's move. If done even half-right, it could be pretty darn sweet.

Even where modding is technically possible, making it easier gets more people into it. I used to play the shit out of isometric city simulations. A lot of my time wasn’t even building cities, it was just playing with the included map editors and imagining the cities I could build. I don’t think it would’ve occurred to me to try making custom maps if it had required mucking around with game files or third-party tools.

Sounds "promising", though I think a staight up Skyrim modding style is not need, just like it was in DAO and previous games, but well I guess they could go just a bit more big, I wouldn't complain.
But yeah, until it's shown, this is all smoke.

They set up a pay-access workshop for mod developers, take a cut from mod users for access to what's created, and C&D anyone who has free tools. That's what I'd expect.

Well, attempts have been made to monetize mods multiple times now and it ended how it ended so far. Ultimately I think developers and publishers are happy for mods to 'passively' help them monetize their product, ergo: the existence of mods/vibrant mod community extends the lifetime of the product and makes them money that way anyhow.

Skyrim obviously did extremely well with user-created content, but there's also enough genuinely weird/creepy/illegal mod content for Skyrim to terrify any corporate legal team.
I'd like to see EA do what Steam is doing and just wash their hands of any responsibility for oversight, but EA has never really leaned in that direction.
