It's a bit embarrassing to myself to admit this, but I'm surprisingly not a fan of the Last of Us as a game. An engaging, emotional post-apocalyptic story, definitely! But the game itself just isn't for me.
Mainly it's the controls. Movement just feels pretty clunky, especially when it comes to shooting or sprinting away. The stealth aspect is okay, even though I personally don't like it because you can never tell who's where and how you can properly hide. The game-play does a pretty good job channeling the stress and fear of survival in harsh environments, with limited supplies, being very easy to get killed, and slow stealth that builds tension. It's very stressful, and that's my major problem. I don't want to be stressed in a game, I want to have fun. Forget that the story might be depressing, if I can't enjoy the game parts, it really takes me out of the experience.
As I said before, I don't think the story of the game is bad, but I would probably end up watching it as opposed to playing it ever again.

You can pretty much guarantee that I'll disagree with whatever the majority thinks of a game. That's okay, gaming is a hobby after all so do what makes you happy. I'm done with trying to enjoy the cool new thing just because everyone else says I should. Some people want nail biting tension with challenging gameplay, others want to be in a jelly baby induced coma letting the game wash over them. It's all good.
I remember when The Last of Us came out the controls were a big issue for a lot of people so you're not alone. I wonder how they'll approach them in the new game.
When I'm met with a game I don't enjoy physically playing myself it just goes into my 'watch it on Youtube' list. I've experienced a bunch of games that way that I would have just ignored otherwise, tis a wonderful thing.

N7Pathfinder , you're not alone. For myself, I can cite another game which also took out a lot of enjoyment due to clunky game mechanics / gameplay. Vampyr. I found I have no interest in continuing even though I find the story and chars interesting. Vampyr is not the only game in which I abandoned for similar reasons, there are others but it's enough that some games are more enjoyable when viewed via cutscene movies on YT.

Yeah, no game is for everyone. I for one have no desire to play Bloodborne at the current moment even though its probably an objectively good game. Its just not what I'm looking for these days.

The Last of Us is mostly about the story. Yeah, no game is for everyone. I for one have no desire to play Bloodborne at the current moment even though its probably an objectively good game. Its just not what I'm looking for these days. May take awhile to get into the Souls series (I did at 36 hours mark), but once you do, good luck being able to stop playing. The Souls series and Mass Effect Trilogy are now by far my most replayed games by a longshot. It's actually all I play these days (ie, right now I'm playing Bloodborne for what, my 10th replay now?).

FWIW, I devoured TLoU SP and went back for MP, which is damn good and still attracts players even now.
The gameplay isn’t remarkable, but I didn’t think it was bad either. Perhaps because I like throwing shit at bad guys, particularly shit that blows up or sets them on fire. I could do that all day.

I couldn’t get into Zelda Breath of the Wild. I didn’t even finish it. Yeah that was really unexpected for me (expectations were high of course) and I was a little disappointed about that 😕

When I finished TLoU I went right in and started a new PT. But, I don't play it to often because it is PS exclusive. I'm not very good at the stick and controller thing. Give me a KB/M! Still TLoU2 will be the game that makes me go out and get a new console I guess.

Yeah...the only aspect of TLOU that i didn't like was the stealth areas...not because it wasn't that great, but i just don't enjoy stealth gaming in general and some parts where you had to sneak around "clickers" was just incredibly annoying. The story and the dynamics between Ellie and Joel was done well tho...

Since no one has mentioned it, the “clunkiness” of the controls was a conscious design choice. They wanted Joel to feel like “just some dude” that’s trying to survive. He’s not an ex-military marksman. He’s a dad who’s had to learn his way around violence. Despite the gunplay, this game is not a shooter. It’s a survival game. The mechanics reflect this. N7Pathfinder, there is character progression within the game that smooths that clunkiness. Joel develops a smoother, steadier hand. He gains access to better gear and tactics. He never becomes Nathan Drake, since that would completely destroy the feel of the game. (Drake would mow down hordes of foes without breaking a sweat. We’re supposed to actually feel threatened in TLoU.) Joel does become more capable, though, if you take the time to explore and find the “survival manuals” that provide these enhancements.

As a piece of cinematic storytelling it's definitely very good. But yeah the gameplay to me and the adherence to realism, always feeling like the underdog, I didn't like at all. It never really progressed or changed into something exciting. I also thought the navigation through the levels was pretty mundane. How many stupid ladders and boards do I need to get for Ellie...

I feel like it was a moderately good movie that was interrupted with some bad gameplay elements. Only played it in trade- my BIL has to play Detroit Become Human now

It’s one of my favorite games I love games with deep stories like that, too few of them imo.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally get why the game was designed that way. But it’s not the gamestyle I personally like to play. I play games because I want to be the hero and do impossible things. I don’t want to be thrown in a dangerous and fear for my life since I’m just a normal guy. If they wanted to stick with the average guy approach, I personally would have felt better if they didn’t have the camera that close to Joel so I can have a better view of my surroundings, or at least make sprinting more responsive and easier to steer.
