I've just bought Mass Effect Andromeda (PC) and had some questions regarding character creation and how to start my game. They are as follows:
- Should I create a custom character or should I stick with the default? I ask this because I've read that the faces went through some problems when the game was first released, and I figured it may be a safer option for me to just stick with the default Ryder face in order to minimize any potential problems I may face.
- Should I change Jack Ryder's first name? I read online that NPCs can refer to you by your first name if I was to stick with 'Jack' Ryder, whereas if I pick a custom name, then they will only refer to my character as 'Ryder', which could break immersion somewhat.
- Are there any lore based reasons for sticking with the default Jack Ryder looks & name? If I were to customise my appearance, I tend to make them a middle aged character with battle scars, etc. Will this go against the lore, as I noticed that the default Jack Ryder seems to be a young male, and I don't really want immersion to be broken if they refer to me as a young man at any point, whereas my customised character would be more of a middle aged man.
- If I want to use Assault Rifles and Shotguns, which training would you recommend? I was going to choose between Security and Scrapper, although I'm not sure which would be best. If I were to pick the default Jack Ryder, I'm guessing I'd had to go with his default training as well as name and looks?
Thank you.

- They solved that problem with faces since patch 1.06, if I remember correctly; so, the choice is on you. - Male Ryder's first name is Scott, not Jack; if you stick with it many NPCs will call him his first name, otherwise he will only be called "Ryder" along the game. (Same thing with Sara, yes, without the final H.) - The Ryder twins are 22 years old. Scott (not Jack) could have an older face, but nevertheless he's young. Their dad is a middle aged man with scars - All classes can use any weapon they want, so, again, the choice is on you.

I just realised, I was calling him 'Jack' Ryder, as I'd recently been waiting at a bus stop and saw an advertisement for the new 'Jack Ryan' series coming out, haha. Embarassing mistake

To add a little about choosing weapons. All characters will start the game with a pistol and then shortly afterrwards acquire an assault rifle. If your starting profile is infiltrator or soldier, you will have an early opportunity to pick up a sniper rifle. If your starting profile is a biotic, you have the opportunity instead to pick up a SMG. I'm sorry, I just don't know if any of the profiles can get a shotgun at that point. (This is all before you leave the first (tutorial) planet. Once you have access to a vendor, you will be able to buy and use any weapon type (of course, quality of any of them will improve as you progress). All profiles start the game with two weapons slots open, but you can open up to four on any of the them just by assigning points into the appropriate perk area.
Any profile and ultimate assign points into any other profile area. What the initial choice does is delay the unlocking of some of the perks until after you have assigned 9 points into the general areas of those profile; whereas, in the profile of your choice, you have many more perks unlocked where you can place points right off the bat as you earn them. This system is far more flexible than the old class system used in the Mass Effect Trilogy. You can limit your selections to custom tailor a specific style of build or spread out your selections to make a generalist type build that can do about anything. If you play the game through 2 or 3 times with the same character, you will ultimately be able to fill in all the available perks slots. Alternatively, you can create several very different specific builds by starting new characters for each playthrough.
As for the name, it's really not much of an issue. The NPC's will sometimes also refer to Scott or Sara as just "Ryder" even if you don't change their default name. During the romances, it is nice to hear a first name. With the CC, I found I was able to create a very nice looking character fairly easily... something I could never successfully do with the CC in the old ME Trilogy.

The flip side of the CC is that you can't go as far from the initial preset as you could in previous games. Also, the initial preset determines the father's appearance, to keep the family looking related. (IIRC, Mom Ryder always looks about the same in the flashbacks.)
