Hi DA2 fans!
So, I'd rather like to play DA2 as a dual weapon rogue again at some point, but I'm not sure about the Arishok fight. I've played this type of character before, but I couldn't handle the duel and had to take him down with a party. I'd like to fight him solo, however, so does anyone have any tips on how to build my rogue and approach the fight?
NB I've heard the Decoy talent can cause the Arishok to glitch and make the fight easy, but I don't want to go down that route.

DW rogue shines with crits. I use this build and it's incredibly fun.You should watch for his charging animation. He does forecast it. After he does the charge, he's vulnerable for a few seconds. You might want to kite a bit if Vendetta is on cooldown, but then you can use that to appear by him and land a massive hit. Do a few normal hits to build up chain, then Assassinate. If you've boosted your dexterity and cunning correctly, your crits should take care of it. On my recent play, I did get impaled once, but he was dead shortly after so it wasn't an issue. (I played on normal.)

Miasmic Flask -> Pinpoint Strikes -> Backstab -> Assassinate
The peasants hide behind the pillars, a dw rogue can end the fight really fast.

Thanks for the responses guys. Does everyone go Assassin-Duelist for the DW rogue? Vendetta is really cool from what I've seen and seems like it would be useful vs the Arishok - last time I fought him as a rogue I did have the Duelist specialization, but didn't really have much idea about building a character so I didn't have that talent.

The only way to fight the Arishok Spot on! Being an archer Hawke, the 90% of the fight was like that.

The only way to fight the Arishok Pffttt I was far more sophisticated than that. I ran a figure 8 around the pillars.

It just made me think maybe I've been going about it the wrong way since last time I took the Shadow since I couldn't resist the early boost to critical damage and I like the Decoy. Sounds like I might be better off foregoing that next time.

boxofscreaming Don't forget that you can use Maker's Sigh potions to respec any time. So if you think Shadow is more fun, or whatever, you can respec for the Arishok fight and then go back to your preferred build in Act 3.

Don't think I was aware of them the first time I played as a rogue!

I'm currently running a Duelist/Assassin DW Hawke - haven't fought the Arishock yet with her (about halfwayish through Act 2), so can't give any specifics on that fight. My first Hawke was a Shadow/something - I do remember using decoy during the fight to distract him. It helped, but it was my first time playing, so didn't quite know what I was doing yet - there was still a lot of figure 8's around the pillars

I really had no idea how to build characters in the Dragon Age games for quite a while. I actually kind of liked refusing the fight, because I'm not sure he deserves the honour after killing the Viscount, who was an OK guy, but on the other hand I want to impress Cassandra!

I stumbled into the duel my first game thanks to Fenris. With my low level (finished that first game at lvl 15) and no DLC goodies, it was a real pain in the derrier. I remember one game where I did the free for all fight but I don't recall which Hawke that was. Now I make sure to build Hawke up especially for the duel. My easiest time was as DW Shadow/Assassin - it was over real quick for the Arishok in that game. I also like using Entropy spells on him.

I didn't really know what I was doing in that first game. Luckily, I always start on easy mode.

The only way to fight the Arishok Hahahaha! That's absolutely nailed it for most Mage Vs Arishok fights. Getting all nostalgic now for running in a circle, waiting for the cooldowns on Horror and Mind Blast, while Dog ineffectually nibbles his ankles. To be honest, the last time I tried it on a DW Rogue, it was so easy that I almost felt cheated, and ended up feeling sorry for the Arishok. Cunning was so high that he was hardly able to hit me, and was doing crazy Twin Fangs critical strikes. You just need to ensure that you have a high cunning build along with some decent crit-based items, such as Puzzle Ring of the Black Fox etc.

On my last playthrough on a DW Rogue Assassin Shadow, I mostly used these skills to make the fight easier (bear in mind I had my modded-strong dog with me at the time). Miasmic Flask, as others have said, but also I supplement with Decoy (just watch for the spin aoe) and stealth when he tries to focus on me. Combining Mark of Death (targeted damage increase) with Pinpoint Strike (making every hit a critical) while he was focused on my mangy mutt gave me a lot of breathing room, and by that time usually Decoy was off cooldown again. Rinse and repeat.
Just try not to get hit too much.

Always play as assassin/duelist. Hate stealth (like it only in DAO). Like this build: more dex, less cun = lower crits but enemies die from auto-attack (tried different builds in 50-60 PTs but this one like the most). With the Arishok "running" is always there, if scripted he will spike you anyway or will hit you with melee attack while you are1 metre away from him, just like 2h warrior Hawke (if I am lucky I can heal or run away from him after that). But what I do with powers: "Vendetta" to get close and then if able (I watch what the Arishok is doing) use assassination+ twin fangs. Backstab is used to get away from him usually. Sometimes have to get close to hit him to restore sta if don't have bottles of that. So in general I just repeat this combination usually 4 times (with riunning inbetween). And everything works just fine (with no DLC items; during my last PT I had a goal - used only chest armor that looks the same as the starting armor which I like very much, even if there are - and there were - better armor).
