What's going on all of you fantastic Freelancers? I know I've been away for a while and I hope the BSN community can forgive me! However, I'm back and ready for action! Today I wanted to go over something that is becoming a trend for Anthem and it seems this system will be present in most if not all areas of the game. That system being level gating. For those of you who don't know what level gating is, it is essentially where a game locks certain things behind levels. It is a common feature in games today and especially online games with progression systems. We first started seeing the level gating with the number of Javelin weapons you can wield at once being indicative of your Freelancer's level. However, it is a rather minor level gate seeing as once you hit level 2 you will receive your second weapon slot. I'm sure the development team intends to implement a similar level gating system behind the number of gear slots you can use as well as the potential for your ultimate gear slot ability to be locked behind one as well. However, this is just speculation. Though what has been confirmed to be level gated are the other three Javelins in the game. When you first start playing Anthem, your default suit will be the Ranger but you will have the opportunity to unlock the other three later. A few weeks ago you would unlock them via missions as you would progress through Anthem's story. These missions would be unique to the Javelin you desired and you could select which one you would want to embark on. After you would complete the mission of your choice you would have to progress through the story a bit more before you could do another. Mark Darrah, one of Anthem's producers, said this in a tweet in regards to how unlocking Javelins will work in Anthem: "We originally were going to have Javelins tied to missions but this resulted in them getting unlocked too late. As a result, you will instead be able to choose a suit to unlock at different level thresholds." This has led to a bit of a divide in the Anthem community, especially with how the level gating method of unlocking will hold up against the former method of mission unlocks. The main gripe has been in regards to how it will hold up in a story setting. What do you all think about this change? Interested and want to hear about it in greater detail? I'll leave a link below to the video I did on this topic and level gating as a whole in Anthem. As ever I look forward to what you all think about this change and hope to see you all soon in the next post/video! (If the link is broken, the video link is here.)

I'm actually somewhat out of the loop when it comes to what level restrictions there are with Anthem. To my knowledge, BioWare has stated that you would be able to play with someone who is higher level then you for activities; such as strongholds. In addition, we also know that gear in the game drops based on your level, so I don't really think level gating will play a huge part in gear accessibility. I do believe Mark Darrah has stated that some activities (or maybe gear) will have a level check on it, but we don't know what yet.

*shrug* Will it feel overly grindy or not? That is the main question for me. Progress and gating is fine as long as you get to try out new stuff, experiment with it and while doing so still make progress unlocking the things ahead. Variety is what keeps these games being played by me.

They could've given the initial choice of javelin at start of game instead of locking everyone into the same one then put the rest behind missions, i think i'd a preferred that, as to scaling it just seems the same as Destiny's to a extent an am fine with that

Well To me I would prefer to chose which Javelin I want at the get go and have the others unlock I really do not want to get stuck in a Javelin and work through what? 15 20 lvls to get the one I want. Think about it a moment 4 rangers doing the lvling less i'm reading it all wrong

The Anthem onion is peeling back.
Remember the way we were supposed to unlock out javelin(s) (ie: via a quest(s))? The devs ran into balancing trouble as the Javs were unlocking too late.
Makes total sense to me. Good on Bioware for fixing this before it even became something for gamers to bitch about. If I want Storm to be my main, I would have been bummed if I had to work up to it by first getting Colossus, then Artificer ... I mean Tracer ... I mean ....

I would have preferred a story quest to unlock new Javelins. There are only three new ones to unlock, so it should be a momentous occasion. My suggestion would be to make those unlocking quests independent of the main storyline, so they can pop up on the map whenever the player reaches the required level. And if BioWare felt that Javelins are unlocked too quickly or too late, all they need to do is change the parameter "player level at which this quest is activated".

To be fair, we still don't know if those missions were removed. Just that Javelins will no longer be tied to them. Ben Irving (Anthem Lead Producer), on Reddit, said that no missions were being removed from the game; when the question was asked if they were removed.

Ben Irving (Anthem Lead Producer), on Reddit, said that no missions were being removed from the game; when the question was asked if they were removed. Maybe those missions never existed in the first place. If no mission was removed and the missions that would have unlocked the Javelins are still in the game, then their story can't be about the Javelin you are about to unlock, since then the mission itself wouldn't make sense anymore if you don't get that Javelin in the end. And if the missions that unlock Javelins are not specifically about that Javelin, then they could have attached the Javelin rewards to just some earlier mission to avoid the late unlocking.

It's all fine as long as we don't see a "Unlock any Javelin you want at any time you want - 100 dollars per suit".

As a general point (I am one of the very few people not working on Anthem) unlocks are staggered in most games to avoid overwhelming players. This lets them get used to a smaller subset of aspects before new things are introduced. As for Anthem, I can't speak to how long it will take to unlock all the Javs but I will say that playing, even with a party of 4 low level Rangers feels quite enjoyable. You'd be surprised how good it feels to fly around .

I believe hands down this will be for the best in Anthem. The only concerns I have been seeing for Anthem's new level gating of Javelins is the potential shift away from the story missions of actually getting said Javelin. Personally, I have every bit of faith that the incredible Anthem dev team will implement it somehow. Be it reaching said level gate allows you to access the story mission of your choice to unlock the Javelin tied to it or something else entirely!
