Ha, that's ok. I'll just grab a drink and a snack while watching from the fade.

I remember the time when Nightmare solo was great achievement, Heartbreaker solo was near impossible. I remember when there wasn't a nightmare mode and perilous was the hardest. I'm showing my age again (hides head in shame)...

I remember when there wasn't a nightmare mode and perilous was the hardest. I'm showing my age again (hides head in shame)... I started playing about week after Nightmare was implemented. Hakkon drop rates were still high, so I was lucky to get 4 out of 6 in around 20 dragon runs with stats around 20.

*reads comments* Oh god, this reminds me of my first time playing DAIMP. I made a private lobby, just to "try it out", because I was scared of running into other players while I still had no MP experience. (blame my social anxiety for that ) So I go into Elven Ruins, walk around the first corner and... looking at the skill bar that's actually my 2nd try, doesn't matter, same result. Then, I posted in the old BSN Last DAMP PUG thread about what had happened and in less then 5mins I got a friend request from Gya and then he, kaileena_sands and Irthir dragged my poor weak butt through Routine. And later when we had around like 30 Stats in everything, we tried Nightmare together. The Fade was very pretty. *gets nostalgia tears* I met so many awesome people through DAIMP. Ah, the good old days. I also tried a couple of solo runs first because I was worried about being too rubbish in a team. Eventually I took the plunge and ruined a few runs for random pugs. After a while, I found a few friends, and they carried me to many victories. By that point, my desire not to get teabagged by Kai had improved my gameplay. And all this while there was endless drama on oldBSN, I miss those times... D:

I don't mean to sound argumentative but you can't tell me routine is difficult with a defensive build. I suspect you may be "soloing" on a diffculty slightly higher than you can handle. Many players have "suffered" through the early levels by playing many MANY games of routine and then threatening. Perilous ate me alive for a long time. The lower difficulties weren't hard but gave me the time to learn the game. Time and patience is required. As you get stronger, soloing isn't a problem at all. Only thing you get "punished" on at that point is lower exp for soloing. It doesn't help that the game is now 4 years old as now players are hard to find. There are many faults with this game that have been well documented. I do not believe solo play is one of those faults. I don't mean to argue either, I was merely expressing my disbelief and disapproval that a dev studio would expend time and effort to make their game worse for solo players as indicated by the OP. I completely understand if a studio doesn't do anything to support solo play if it's a multiplayer game, but actively making it less fun for solo players is something I don't understand. I stopped playing this game in December 2014, and my reasons had nothing to do with solo play. My post was not based on personal experience - it's my uninformed opinion based on the assumption that the thread starter knows what he's talking about.

And yet, Hacks and Uploads in Andromeda ARE specifically designed like this. Andromeda is one of the most solo-unfriendly games that I have played in a long time. Yes, it can be done, but a lot of the mechanics are particularly punishing for solo play. BioWare does seem to have an issue with people soloing their games.

So I took the advice. I could not find anybody to play with last night at all and I really wanted to level up my Silent Sister. Finny-No-Mates ended up soloing Ferelden Castle + Dragon on Routine. Somebody was with me for like a second at the start and that's about all it was. I heard Keeper say something and they were gone before any enemies were killed. I was fairly certain I could solo it anyway, but I would have liked people to join me, but there just didn't seem to be anybody about at that time.
I completed the solo run, not that much XP or reward to make it worth it. She was so close to level 20 I could smell it. I started a regular solo run with her in hopes somebody would turn up. Got the Tevinter ruins, began clearing out zone 1 when the game froze and locked up my entire computer. I couldn't exit through task manager, nothing. That is the first time I've ever had DAI freeze up my computer like that. I do get CTDs in SP and MP from time to time but never a bad one like that. I had to shut my PC down hard.
So I restarted my PC, started up DAI and this time I found people to connect to, but they were on Perilous. However, I recognized some of the names and have seen them play in my lobbies on Routine and I've seen them in several Threatening matches, so I figured they probably wouldn't mind me hanging out. Silent Sister was kind of holding her own, I think I arrived on Zone 3. Then I had a CTD. I was pretty worried the game was acting up like that. I logged back in pretty quickly, found the match and was able to survive and finish it.
Then I saw them in a NM lobby and hung out in the fade for the most part. But again, I did see a few of them in routine and threatening after that when some eventually showed up, so I'm going to guess they didn't mind. I try not to make a habit of it, unless I know they're cool with it.
I just did a game repair now, hopefully whatever was going on is sorted now. Maybe I'll get Origin In Game Overlay to work too.

There is obviously a difference between encouraging team play - by increasing XP, sharing rewards, etc - and actively punishing solo play. Only one of the two is good game design, the other not so much. Its not a solo game. It's a bad design decision to go out of your way to make playing alone so much harder than otherwise. People do not play the game solo on purpose until perhaps you are uber powerful and if they merely left the game as it is when one person starts a game I would have no issue at all with it. Adding boss wandering creatures and upping the aggo big time does nothing but piss off the player. Especially when they go out of their WAY to make you want to start games alone. After about 5 seconds of match finding they stick you in a match as the host by force for goodness sakes.
I'm not asking for anything special to encourage playing solo, I just think it is dumb to encourage to start solo in matching and then punishing the player for starting the game solo and hoping people join.

One other thing I wish they had done (or hadn't taken away...): self-rezzing with medigel potions. It would make them so much more useful - like when you think 'just a couple of quick kills and i'll be back to half health, and then BOOM, you're done'.

There's definitely a place for solo play in DAIMP, when you want to learn more about your character's abilities (like Finvola), or strategy for staying alive *without* having to rely on perma-barrier or an overpowered teammate.
Solo runs helped me perfect how to play several characters: reaver, assassin, alchemist, hunter...
That being said, I don't think I've noticed doing maps solo being different than with a team. Large creatures can show up and draw a crowd in zone 1 or 3 regardless of how many people are playing, no?

Yes I do that a lot with Zither as I wanted to learn how to work him properly without annoying people in the process and actually beat a routine solo with him before I went to bed last night, so I think that means I'm doing something right. It was pretty funny watching Samson & Co. chase me in circles all over the Orlesian Chateau.
I just did the same with Saarabas, teaching myself how to work her because she's another trisky one to get the hang of. Sadly I had a CTD when I tried another match, so I'll try again later.
But yeah, I solo a lot if I can't find anybody to play with and either work on leveling up somebody or practice with characters I need to figure out before feeling confident enough to try them in a team.

I' ve had matches where i killed every enemy in the 1st part of the map.

It's MP, so it's designed to play with others. Obviously the assumption was that people would collect others via match maker. Any thoughts about soloing are second thoughts if at all.

Due to me being a night owl, I sometimes have a hard time finding a lobby or nobody on my friend's list is around, so I start a solo match and hope somebody comes along. I have made some new friends through PUGs or through friends of friends, so it's certainly not as lonely out there as it used to be.
But there is usually a time in the middle of the night where I can't find a match for one reason or another so I set out by myself. I finally felt ready to try out the Storm Pact belt with my AW using a HOK ring and Heart Of Pride staff. I actually set that one up to be solo, made it private, went invisible so nobody would join because I wanted to see if I could do it myself. It was on Threatening and AW was level 13 (I think). I got Demon Commander. I wasn't able to do that weeks ago when I first got the belt! I was amazed how he just melted everything in his path. I did have to use one health potion fighting DC, but that was fine. I won, and it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I thought I would really struggle with the belt, but it just took some getting used to but it's not something I'll try out on higher difficulties for quite a while.

Try ditching the pact belt and use urgency belt. Keep barrier up. Remove all heal on kill and stay below 50% Health. Build your staff with crit dmg or attk bonuses (Hakkon staff shines this way) or just use Heart of Pride. Its a damn sight more fun and still great DPS. (Speed boost offsets the damage numbers "loss") Make sure you grab Mind over Matter and Stonefist first, so youve got 2 great range abilities (since you begin with Chain Lightning. Jump off the bridge in castle zone 1 to instantly go just under 50% HP. Learn enemy immunities and choose your targets accordingly (higher levels) Should work pretty good for you on threatening. Can always throw on an HoK ring or 2 if you feel too risky in Perilous. Takes practice but Im sure youll be using no HoK in Perilous once confident. Pact belts overrated.

I never used the pact belts in single player because I didn't think they sounded that great or the trade off was worth it, but when I started MP and saw people talking about them I thought I'd give them a try, at least for AW.
When I get more skilled and confident, I will try that some time too, as well as the different builds for him.

Just tried belt of urgency instead of pact belt, definetly need some more promotions for it to be worthwhile. Even sitting at 60/80/60 I wasn’t able to do enough dmg with either hakkon or pride staves. Was fun on pride though! Can pretty much just spam chain lightning
