So, ProBoards doesn't "allow" pop-up ads on their forum. They also leave you no native way to report them, as the ad reporting options are related only to the banner ads that should be there, not other ads that shouldn't. ... Let this be your place to share screenshots or other evidence of the rogue script, so that our moderators can present it to ProBoards. ... This one has been annoying the shit out of me for months. Mobile version of the page.

Thanks Glenn. I'll tag regack and @howyummy so they're aware. I rarely use the mobile site as it makes me want to punch a wall, but when I have there have been no ads (that's a UK Samsung phone, using chrome). That one you showed is just obnoxious.

I just figured since I know SofaJockey has one (saw his post about insecure server and changing ProBoards to https), so perhaps this can more easily be handled by your team.

Probably good for the coders to take a gander first yes. Perhaps more ppl will share examples here too, and of course we can all view the proboards forums so it could be that this has been asked already. Reading your modern annoyances thread and the crap with your phone, I also wonder if this is a US problem?

Qui-Gon GlenN7I get obnoxious ads that make sound, but I've not seen any popups on the mobile site, but I only spend about 10 seconds on the mobile site, until I can click off to the regular desktop one, because the mobile site is just awful, and there's nothing that ProBoards will let us do with it. I was starting to work on a theme that had larger text and smaller avatars and such, to make using on mobile a little easier, but I haven't honestly gotten very far, you could try it out, but it's also going to have the standard ProBoards ads stuck in there, since it's still a desktop site. It's the <<<Mobile Test>>> theme. Meanwhile, I have a support account, so I can ping ProBoards and see if they will provide any feedback about the irritating ads - hopefully it's not something like "well, why don't you pay for the Ad-free DLC!" I'll report back when I hear something.

Thus I have gotten used to the awful mobile site ( ) because it is better than no uBSN at all! I do know that this is all site-specific; I do not get that lame Disney pop-up anywhere else, and it seems that many of these events are triggered by checking my notifications.Edit: when you wake up to 35 notifications, you want to see who you angered, who you made laugh, etc...

Just following the cheese So the response I got back from posting in ProBoards support... Hi If they haven't done so already, it may be worth them clearing the cache and cookies in their browser, as the ad may be emanating from there. If it continues to show, there should be a Report Ad link at the bottom of the forum which they can use to report the ads which display on the page.

I suppose that *might* be an option on the desktop site. It is not a viable option for mobile, as that "Report Ad" link only allows you to choose the top or bottom ad as being the issue. It is not. Also, site specific cookies in my browser, that only activate on this site, is a feedback loop. Where did the cookie come from, and why is this site the vector of attack? In other words, they didn't help you or me

It is entirely possible that I am the only person on the site that experiences these things. For a guy that doesn't surf porn, doesn't go to shady sites, and uses internet common sense fairly well, I doubt it. But, it is possible. I will delete cookies and stuff, but that never changed anything here regarding framebursting or pop-ups in the past. My feeling - they do not vet their ads well, and don't care because lolprofit.

For what it's worth, I am in a similar boat. Not here, but with someone's privately-owned college football forum. Pretty big name forum, have no issues with them on desktop, but I feel like half the time I access them on mobile, I get those ads that load up and take over the whole page stating I won crap. The ones where you have to just totally close out the web page and try to load that thread again. Phone only ever does it with that ONE site. Have cleared the cookies/cache, but that crap inevitably starts up again at some point. And I only ever visit the same small handful of sites that aren't shady, illegal, or pr0n-related. I really can't figure it.

It is not the end-user at fault here, so feel good about that

They do not have a link at the bottom of the page that tells us, but they do say that it is a privately owned website. This means - they are not using a domain provider's free/low-cost PhPBB software, which is what I used on my forum when I had a GoDaddy domain. They are not using ProBoards either. Both of those softwares require you to display their name on the site. So, for that site, you would have to talk to tigerdroppings, lol I am not saavy enough on mobile to try and decipher their forum software. If I get to sit down today, I might take a look with a real computer.

I was just curious, so I looked around through their code and I don't think they're using any of the usual suspects. They might have bought some software, and they were able to remove the licensing information, or they rolled their own. I don't see any traces in any of the page headers or .css files or anything that indicate what it is.

Rolled their own.... Lol.
I wrote my first "BBS" software when I was 14. In Applesoft Basic.
Basically, it was a bunch of menus, a bunch of lol security checks, and no modem functionality - realized at a certain point that I would have to learn a more robust language to do that stuff properly.
Applesoft Basic. All hail the GoSub!

I've never seen those pop up ads. Maybe it's because I use a program called AdGuard that keeps ads from popping up. I can whitelist a site but unfortunately it blocks the ProBoards banner ads. Hate to do that to this free site but it's better than incidents like you're having.

I have been mostly unable to use the site on mobile, for days now. Instant redirects to congratulations, and no this isn't my browsers fault or mine. Only this site.
ProBoards is a joke. A bad one. They have had issues with redirects since before this board existed. They also seem unable to fix it.
My recommendation - if you want to use this site on mobile, get an ad blocker that works and use it. Sure, the site loses our "advertising" support. I don't feel bad, this site is compromising my security every time I try to access it.
This is shameful. Fuck ProBoards.

I am seeing popup ads on my mobile device. I think the same one Glenn is seeing: Congratulations Android user" or some such nonsense. The ad requires the user to click on kt. It absolutely blocks any device access unless you either leave the site or accept their bs offer. It renders the bb utterly unusable.
Does anyone have any recommendations for ad-blocking apps for Android phones?

Does anyone have any recommendations for ad-blocking apps for Android phones? what brand device do you have? If Samsung, they have a couple decent options for their browser. If you have root access, adaway is the easy obvious answer. Best solution. My phone is a little difficult to root (will be replaced as a result) so at the moment Brave Browser does a better job than Chrome. Basically everything does a better job than Chrome. If you can deal with the slowness and bugginess of Firefox, they have some extensions available.

Today, I am testing Bromite, a Chromium based browser for Android that has built in ad-blocking.
It disables both top and bottom banner ads, so that functionality works. I haven't been redirected yet, and over the last few days I would have been redirected multiple times by now.
I would encourage our staff to communicate with ProBoards about this issue. They are losing revenue, thanks to their carelessness, and they have ignored my post on their support forum. The only reasonable option for accessing this site on mobile currently is to block all ads.
Edit: if you do not have root access, this is your best choice atm imo lol bbq.
Edit 2: this is a working solution. For now.

It absolutely blocks any device access unless you either leave the site or accept their bs offer. It renders the bb utterly unusable. Does anyone have any recommendations for ad-blocking apps for Android phones? I had that too with my phone and the googly chrome browser. I switched to the one that Samsung delivered with the thing. It also has back and forward clicky things - much better than chrome and so far no ad hijacked this browser.

I am seeing popup ads on my mobile device. I think the same one Glenn is seeing: Congratulations Android user" or some such nonsense. The ad requires the user to click on kt.
