A discussion thread for how we encourage discussion and new members to BSN by structuring our sub-forums appropriately. As we have N7 Day nearly upon us and Anthem's launch in only a few months, we have been reviewing our forum ahead of additional anticipated visitors to BSN. Three changes we are making today are focused on our General Discussion boards: We're splitting out the popular TV, Movies and Music threads into their own sub-forum so that people have more room to discuss entertainment. That will have a side effect of also freeing up some space in The Lobby so that popular but not headline threads don't disappear onto page 2 quite as quickly. We're also opening out the popular 'Other Games' sub-forum to allow more in-depth discussion of game studios making games similar to the BioWare franchises. BioWare games don't launch annually, so it's nice to have the room for BSNers to discuss other games they enjoy playing to the extent that they want to discuss them. Finally, we're pulling the four French-language sub-forums into one so that the most popular French-language threads are more visible without having to go looking through four quieter sub-forums. By all means, give us some feedback and other ideas you have in the feedback forum to help us keep BSN a vibrant and busy place: bsn.boards.net/thread/16027/encouraging-discussion-bsns-sub-forums

Enforce the rules more strictly in the forums. The last BSN was shut down due in large part to the hostility and chaos that existed in it, so if we are to attract people to this BSN it must be seen as different.

Enforce the rules exactly as you currently enforce them.
Making more subs was a good idea, but you are creating a problem for yourself and your team by doing so.
More subs = more threads = more ground for "global" moderators to cover. You are eventually going to need submoderators. This will provide some safer spaces for some of our more sensitive members, while also creating some looser spaces that will have to be supervised more heavily.
I am surprised at the lack of formal announcement ???

I am surprised at the lack of formal announcement ??? There's a formal announcement pinned to the top of each old and new sub-forum, QGG. I'll now add it to the OP here. And appointing a few more moderators is by no means a bad or ruled out idea, as we head towards Anthem launch.

Good stuff guys. A welcome expansion for the forums indeed. An interesting debate will be, did we pick the right studios. We don't want 30 sub-forums (!) If there's a call we might be able to add the odd one extra, balanced by throwing back into the general mix any new forums that people don't really use much.

We are still - primarily - a place for people to discuss Bioware and their games. Spreading our wings a little to games and gaming companies that have a certain 'synergy' with Bioware (games) seemed like a good place to look at forum 'tweaks'.

Hopefully the new subs will give our regulars a bigger space to chat about the non BioWare games they're playing, and allow for multiple threads for one game which won't get lost in the mix. And of course the new subs aren't set in stone, if one isn't getting much traffic it can be merged with other games, if another dev becomes popular it can get it's own space. We'll judge it as it goes and see how the forum interacts with it all.

I mean, for the most part I've seen mostly Bethesda games, CDPR games, and a couple of static franchises like Warframe and Overwatch. We don't discuss EVERY game under the sun. Concessions have to be made, so only the most "popular" Developers, and the rest well, can still talk in the old format at "Other games" .

Just noticed the huge re-design of offtopic/other games. Now I know why my "new" button kept taking me back to page 1 of a 200+ page thread I just posted in today. Not sure I like it separated out by company rather than by game in a single topic since, for the most part, who makes a game isn't something a normally pay much attention to.

It's for practical reasons, having separate sections for every game would make the front page extremely cluttered. This was the most practical work around, and there are games mentioned in each title to help direct you. I hope it becomes easy to navigate quickly for everyone.

having separate sections for every game That's not what I meant....I mean the way it was: a single folder with a thread for each game/franchise as they come up. Now instead of checking one folder, there are 6? 8? Having "new"ness re-set due to shifting locations is also a pita.

Might be good to have one for Obsidian.

It was certainly discussed. We're just going to roll with the ones we have at the moment. If one (or more) of them fail to attract a regular crowd who post, they'll probably re-merge with Other Games and another company may be given their chance to shine. If that happens, I'll certainly be voting Obsidian.

I support this inclusion. They are associated with BioWare due to the KotOR series and Black Isle (Obsidian precursor for those that didn't know) association with the Baldur's Gate games and Icewind Dale.

Now instead of checking one folder, there are 6? 8? Having "new"ness re-set due to shifting locations is also a pita. Ah okay. The goal is to allow multiple threads for each game. So before there were one or two for each that would quickly get lost in the shuffle in the Other Games sub. Take the new AC game threads, there are 2 I believe and they filled up quickly. If you had a specific question it could be 4 pages back within a day or two, so not many eyes would see it. This way you can make a thread for that in a place where others who play the game will hang out. It won't suddenly sink to page 2 either as it may have in the old other games section. In this new format, when Cyberpunk comes out for example, you can make multiple threads in the CDPR sections addressing quests, character creation, bugs etc, and they're all in one easy place. So that's the reasoning and we hope it will give people space to grow going forward. I'm sorry it's a pain in the arse though.

OK, I'll be that person who doesn't like more sub categories... This means if I want to browse what's going on with other games I have to open each category now. I find this very... inconvenient. Especially on mobile. But since I seem to be the only one, never mind me!

I know my opinion isn't worth two cents but:
Not a fan of all the new categories. Seems overkill to have so many when things were pretty concise before. I feel its a case of fixing something that wasn't broken.
