I remember Vega commenting in ME3 (on Palaven) that the war effort could really use Krogan and Batarians, as these two were the "meat" or battle-hardy species. This goes in line with Yorrik's past observation of one: ripping apart a quasar machine with his bare hands

This goes in line with Yorrik's past observation of one: ripping apart a quasar machine with his bare hands Catherynne Valente mentioned she did quite a lot of research checking in with BW and the ME Wikia. She is also a fan, having played all games, so it is no wonder this book was so rich lore wise.
Quite a high note to finish the trilogy of books for MEA to me: MEA Annihilation> MEA Initiation > MEA Nexus Uprising

MEA Annihilation> MEA Initiation > MEA Nexus Uprising
I agree with that order, I'd say Annihilation and Initiation were close but Uprising was really lacking. I put Uprising down for months and just couldn't be bothered to pick it back up until Initiation was about to come out and I had to finish it.

I'll have time to sit down and read it this weekend. Is it a page turner? I read it in three sittings so I'd say so. There is a bit, just before the act change, where it all suddenly slows down but it does pick up again. Yeah, it was pretty good. Best of the three books. I would have finished it sooner, but it's football season lol.

*Spoilers*
Just on the ‘grandmother’ thing, I’m pretty sure that wasn’t meant literally. My impression was that Liat is many generations removed from Senna and is referred to as ‘grandmother’ affectionately.
Also, did the description of a Drell and Liat’s projection smoking cigarettes bother anyone else? I’m sure each species has its vices but why would they be human ones (particularly on Rannoch before humanity was discovered)? I don’t recall any references in the trilogy to non-humans smoking, although I could be wrong.
And I’m a bit unsure about the frequent descriptions of views of stars and comets etc (albeit distorted) out the Ark’s windows. I always understood that in FTL travel you couldn’t distinguish anything outside the ship - you can’t in the in-game FTL cinematics, at least - and this is faster FTL than in the game, at roughly 4,000 times the speed of light!
Otherwise I really enjoyed the book and the plot twist was well done. It got a little bit slow in parts but I absolutely loved how much effort Valente put into crafting such unique characters. They are probably some of the deepest characters anyone has created in the ME universe. I really want to see/hear more of Anax, Senna, Borbala and Irit now... :/

It is odd to read, though. - The Ark dropped out of FTL due to the computer errors.

About the grandmother I think you are right. I was checking the book again and found this passage here from page 129:
"Senna reached out and pressed his hand fondly against the side of the metal disc. It was warm, like a real grandmother would be. But Liat’Nir was not a real grandmother. Liat’Nir, hard-drinking, hard-talking, hard-coding, hard-living progenitor of his line, had died in the first spasm of the geth war, when all of Rannoch burned".
I don't see a problem with Drell or Quarians(pre Morning War) smoking. It is the same thing as how all races have their own version of alchoolic drinks like Serrice Ice Brandy, Turian Brandy or Ryncol.
The Keelah Si’yah is moving at 11 light years per day, that is mentioned on the book. And yes objects from the outside will be visible inside the ship thanks to Doppler effect.

Thanks for clarifying the visibility thing! I guess it was the fact that the cigarettes are actually called ‘cigarettes’ which bothered me. At least with alcohol the other species have their own particular names for their local drinks. Maybe the drell is actually smoking a human cigarette but there’s no way Liat could be! I would have used a spoiler tag before but I was on my phone so it was a bit fiddly. Hence writing *spoilers* at the top.

I just finished the audiobook on Audible. Great story and very well read by Scott Ryder. He did a fantastic job doing Elcor, Hanar, and Quarian voices. The Batarian and Elcor doctor were easily my favorite characters. I was shocked by the origins of the virus. I agree with the earlier rankings of this book>Cora’s book>Nexus Uprising.

If someone who has read the novel does not mind, can you tell me what the ultimate fate of the ark is and all the species? I am going to assume some hundreds of people die but ultimately they are saved and find some planet to colonize?

So i noticed that on page 202 one of the baratains mentions being attacked by these large unknown black creatures. is this in reference to the reapers? Yes. He mentions the black "insects" striking the eezo refineries and turning the people into husks on Camala. In ME3, the codex for Camala states "The Reaper invasion has turned Camala's cities from affluent oases into a living nightmare. Alliance intelligence suggests that early in the Reaper invasion, a high percentage of the planet's population was captured and converted to husk creatures for future offensives."
Note: Camala is a place mentioned in ME:Revelation novel where Batarians sold captured human slaves (e.g. to Batarian brothels, etc.). Might be why the Cannibals have humans fused to a Batarian arm.

I appreciate that. Huh. that's interesting and a little disappointing. We don't know how their timeline lines up with Andromeda though, it may be that the story takes places years before the Hyperion arrived. Nexus arrives in Andromeda first ( slightly higher speed than the arks, just departed a bit earlier or both?) in 2818 … with Turian, Salarian and Asari arks arriving in 2019 (but not meeting with the Nexus). The Hyperion was supposedly a bit late … arriving 14 months after the Nexus. Yes. He mentions the black "insects" striking the eezo refineries and turning the people into husks on Camala. In ME3, the codex for Camala states "The Reaper invasion has turned Camala's cities from affluent oases into a living nightmare. Alliance intelligence suggests that early in the Reaper invasion, a high percentage of the planet's population was captured and converted to husk creatures for future offensives." Thank you, but can we talk about how much a hgue bomb shell that is? like i did a reading double take from the, just casually referencing the reapers like it no bloody big deal. The Nexus and the other arks departed in 2185. The Reapers arrived in 2186, it sounds like the additional time to modify the Quarian ark was close to a year, departing in Sep 2186, right at the start of the invasion. My guess is the Batarian did not know the extent of the invasion … just got out of Dodge while the getting was good.
The Quarian ark was supposedly 30 years out from Andromeda, during the events of Annihilation. If that was the case, the Nexus was ~28 years away from Andromeda at that point. If travel time for the Quarian ark was similar to the others, they could arrive in Andromeda about a year after the Hyperian, give or take.

The menssage from the Quarian Pathfinder at the end of ME Andromeda was most likely related to what Senna said at the end of MEA:Annihilation. They would keep away from the Nexus until full decontamination protocols were followed to avoid infecting anyone with the virus and also to give them time to choose if they would either tell the truth or come up with a bullshit story for the decontamination.
About the Reapers, since the Batarian Hegemony was pretty much isolated from everyone else most people didn't pay mind to the "news blackout" from their sector of space until refuges started poaring through the Exodus Cluster. Even so people only start taking things seriously when later the Reapers atack both Earth and Palaven at the same time.
So most likely the people at the Keelah Si'yah had no idea that was the begining of a galactic wide invasion instead of some minor unknown species starting a war with the Hegemony.

Im confused on your first point. The recording we hear for the Keelah is obviously a female qurian and the captain did send out a distress call and it got a response by the end of the book. so was that during the events of the games? before maybe during the Nexus up rising?

The warning message is sent by the Quarian Ancestor VI after it is uploaded to the computer mainframe. The author confirmed this on her reddit AMA.

The author made a point to state that Batarian eyes are reptilian. We have no knowledge of what exactly Batarians are as per our taxonomic classification, but if they are reptilian, that makes three reptilian races in the ME universe (Krogan, Drell, and Batarians).
