Despite the four eyes they always strike me more as a "mammalian" species. I think the author even mentioned on her QA on reddit about how they had some thin body hair across their bodies (according to Bioware), not that hair are exclusive to mammalians (some ancient reptilians most likely had it for instance).

So …
If the big asteroid had not hit earth and wiped out the dinosaurs, Shepard coulda/shoulda/woulda been a lizard too.
Mordan Solus as an LI?
Or would Shepard have been a chicken?
Functionally compatible with Garrus?
Why did the Shepard cross the road? (S)he had to go.

They do have bristle-like hairs (my first thought was spiders), but apparently in the novel it is mentioned that Drell do as well. The author stated (on reddit) that this is reptile-like hairs (?) though. Other than that, I remember Aria calling Anto a "scaly ass" in ME: Invasion comic. So Batarians have scales in some places it seems.

Just started this today so not reading the thread yet. I'm all of 2 chapters in.
A couple thoughts so far....
From the prologue: What refugees from Noveria and Virmire? There weren't any colonies there to be destroyed like on Eden Prime.
From the prologue: Another reference to a "benefactor" being the one who gave the tech the code to upload. Is this the same "benefactor" who funded the mission? If so, why sabotage this ark? Then again, other arks also experienced some kind of sabotage en route so maybe not surprising after all. Still, it makes no sense to fund the mission as a means of surviving the Reapers, then work to kill everyone before they even get there. Which means.....there must be another faction involved.
From chapters 1-2: does the ship not have an active SAM like the other arks? There are PFs aboard who are linked to one but they are all still asleep (or dead , but I haven't got that far yet). But if it does, why do they call it "K" instead of "SAM"? There was no VI on the Hyperion other than SAM. I could understand the quarians not wanting one but it seems weird they'd sign up for the mission knowing SAM was a thing.

SAM is AI, not VI.
K (I did read the book, I'm guessing) is VI.
I don't find it unbelievable that a section of Quarians would be of position where others could (FOOOLISHLYYYYY) make AI, and the said Quarians could associate with that, but they don't want to tamper with it themselves. But like the other subsections of populations in the Ai, they are some of the weirder/dreamer sorts.

But if it does, why do they call it "K" instead of "SAM"? There was no VI on the Hyperion other than SAM. I could understand the quarians not wanting one but it seems weird they'd sign up for the mission knowing SAM was a thing. She was expanding a bit of lore there but it makes sense.
Noveria had a population of more than 350.000 during ME1 events.
We only walk around the administrative building and one of their facilities (peak 15) but there were several others spread across Noveria since two dozen companies worked there, so it is not strange to think they had a whole structure assembled on the planet to fill the needs of all the people working and living there. There was even mention about a resort constructed around the equatorial zone for employees.
And Virmire was the role model of a garden world, even if it was in inside the Terminus System. We saw independent colonies before on ME2, so maybe those refugees were from one (or more) of them.
SAM and pretty much most of the Ark systems were disabled during the journey to save energy. That which you are talking about was the ship main VI responsible to watch over the Keelah Si'yah during most of the travel. Now it is better I don't say anything else because it will be spoiler.

A couple more thoughts after Ch. 3:
There's an erroneous reference to Andromeda being only 600 light years away.
The concept of the sleepwalkers is interesting. I don't recall any reference to them in the other 2 books or in the game at all. Is this something only this ark did?

All the arks probably did, also the Nexus. I believe it was on the Asari ark, Drack makes a comment about how quiet the halls are, when only the maintenance folks are wandering about. Makes me think Drack was on one of the Nexus sleepwalker teams. Didn't know to call them that, until reading the book … and Drack didn't call them that in the dialog … but what he said fits the description of a sleepwalker team.

Okay. I just finished the book about 2 hours ago. No spoilers from me. But this has been my favorite Mass Effect novel (and I have read all of them).
It was a great book. The author (Catherynne Valente) did an amazing job. It takes a cast of the "supporting" races in the Mass Effect universe and pulls them to the forefront. My favorite character was the elcor or the batarian (yes, a batarian). I laughed a lot. I felt a lot. It was a good read. It was a nice bit of sanity in my last week of the semester in between stress, homework and sickness.
The plot was interesting and gave us a bit more into the lore in parts. It may not completely take the place of a dlc, but it is a very close 2nd for me. I feel as a dlc, we would have lost something. I like my pathfinder, but I would have missed the alien perspective.
I also got to read ME: Initiation as well. It was really good too. Cora was not my favorite character at first, but she grew on me. This novel makes her really cool. You also get a bit of background on Alec Ryder as well.
I'm sure there are some nitpicks for both, but I had a marvelous time with them.

It is a typo, the author talked about it on her AMA.All the arks probably did, also the Nexus. Didn't know to call them that, until reading the book … and Drack didn't call them that in the dialog … but what he said fits the description of a sleepwalker team. Didn't knew that since i usually bring Cora and Vetra to the asari Ark. Interesting.
But yeah it makes sense that the other Arks and the Nexus did the same type of maintenance considering the duration of the journey (+600 years).

Obviously, whichever sleepwalker team was assigned to fix it (and failed) did not include Kesh.
Hyperion's loss, Nexus' gain.
Kesh would have it fixed, upgraded to detect dark energy anomalies like the scourge and had her team served Ryncol upon revival in Heleus.

Seems the author couldn't quite decide what Anex was supposed to be. She's described as a "detective" but when talking about her history with the batarian, she was really more of a hanar fixer and then a Shadow Broker agent. Where does detective (I'm thinking detective like Anaya in ME2) fit in to the mix? Also re: Anex - I hear her speaking with Vetra's voice - very annoying!

Another observation - it seems the team is taking a huge risk asking the computer to revive specific people, considering it can't tell dead ones from lives one.

I guess my take on it … without spoilers … was that the author was trying to project a group of folks … loosely tied together for a specific, non-recurring task … that tried to deal with things that they lacked the tools to properly assess and mitigate, that lacked the personal experience and knowledge to deal with effectively. So they were doing the best they could, with what they had … while they worked with almost no information on a ship that was largely shutdown, save its travel to Andromeda and the Heleus cluster. As far as the Drell is concerned, she was a chameleon, being whatever she needed to be in the moment, that best served her purposes. I'm guessing she had many personas in her (relatively) brief life … the book more than hints at it, but we never see the "full" picture. As bshep says, the Drell is a professional liar … by the end of the book, I'm not sure anything we think we know about here is fully true … what we have is some tidbits that are probably true, wrapped up in layers of deceit and fabrication. I would really like to see a DLC that expands on her story … or at least clues us in to what's real about her … along with the other folks on the Quarian ark. Maybe she joins up with Ryder to address lingering issues on the ark and that allows for some story exposition. More likely, we would see her in MEA2, perhaps a new addition to the Tempest or maybe a teammate of the "other" Ryder, if the non-Pathfinder sibling gets more air time. Or maybe she joins Sloan on Kadara (or Reyes, if that's your choice). But she's an interesting character and I would like to see more of her and her story in game.

About 2/3s through now.....so, this virus is sounding like another Omega plague courtesy of the Collectors (or other Reaper agents). Maybe they found out about the AI only after the first 4 arks left and decided to sabotage this one to make sure everyone on the other end died rather than escape them.
The shadow figure in the cameras almost has to be a geth, imo, in order to avoid them so perfectly every single time.
Was a bit confused by the batarian talking about what sounded like Reaper ships attacking Camala. This last ark didn't leave that late, did it? After the Reapers' invasion?

Remember, the invasion was only heard of once refugees reached Citadel space and then Earth was attacked. It's possible there were several weeks spent culling the Batarians, establishing a ground force before they launched their offensive at the rest of the galaxy. I imagine the Ark left before Earth and Palaven were hit.

Finished the book and well, damn....did not see THAT coming. But, now the message at the end of MEA kinda makes no sense? Going back to the beginning of the thread to read everything now. The message was sent by the ship VI (author mentioned on her twitter or ama - not sure) probably to avoid letting anyone coming into contact until they could clean the ark from the virus.

The message was sent by the ship VI (author mentioned on her twitter or ama - not sure) Well, not in the book so it didn't happen. But even if it did, it still makes no sense because that voice sounds very panicky, not at all like a VI would sound just relaying info. I know the captain said she sent out a distress call but given how things turned out, she was obviously lying.
