Anyone here playing Thronebreaker? I am asking because I am thinking of buying the game but the premise with the card game combat is pretty far from my usual gaming habits, so I'd apreciate some first hand impressions.
I've heard a lot of good things about the story and I did like Gwent in Witcher 3, so should I get this game or should I wait for a sale some time down the road?

It’s on my list, but I haven’t finished Wild Hunt yet, so it’ll be a little while before I play it.

Boyfriend bought it on release day. He likes it quite a bit, the regular card matches are usually quite easy but he got stuck on a particular story battle and hasn't picked it up since. But we're playing DOS2 in co-op so it's not like he lost interest in the game. Just putting it off.
I'll get it too eventually. Apparently it's quite different from Gwent which worries me a bit. I LOVED Gwent and wanted to get Thronebreaker because I thought it was going to be more Gwent. But I guess the base rules were way too simple and easy to sustain a whole game that uses it as a battle mechanic. Not sure yet I'll enjoy it as much as I initially thought. All I can forward is that the presentation is said to be good.

I have been playing. Game is quite good, they did a fine mix of card gameplay with a story full of decisions and consequences. Later today i will start playing chapter five (Rivia).

Then there is also story and puzzle battles that have some objectives you need to complete to finish it.

I haven't finished but I've been enjoying it so far, the artwork and voice acting is lovely and the story engaging. I enjoy pitching camp and talking to my companions and I've been surprised at all the decisions the game has given me so far. I've heard there are a number of different endings.
I can't say how someone would feel about it if they don't like gwent because that's how all the battles and puzzles take place. Gwent is a lot more complex here, but someone told me if you put it on easy you can skip the gwent battles if you lose once. I haven't tested that because I'm obsessed with gwent and like to play it.
I also love how it shows what scumbags the Nilfgaard empire is, something I felt they were quite soft on in the witcher 3 making them seem better than they were.

Not initially launching on Steam was a bad idea. GOG is still a fraction of Steam's customer base.

Very obvious why they first released it there. Gog is their company and steam eats a portion of the sales.

They should also look beyond not being on Steam for why their sales might not be meeting expectations, for that means to me when I read a statement like that its beyond 30% reduction because of the cut Valve takes for each sale.

Yeah I heard about it not meeting expectations, shame. There's also the fact that they put a lot of work into a story with card game battles. While gwent enthusiasts and witcher fan loyalists might love it, it feels like it would be very niche. I'm not quite sure it ever had the appeal to draw in the people they wanted imo.

Yea, I am also a bit surprised, they seem to have had quite the expectations for this (you gotta have some if they're not met, right). It doesn't seem like a very mainstream game to me. I actually figured it was meant as a little extra thing for Witcher/Gwent fans and not so much as a game for the general masses. I mean, from what I read, it basically started as an expansion to Gwent and just expanded too much for that. Apparently, the game did make a profit, so why they'd expect huge sales is weird. Maybe they based it on Gwent's success but that was a Free2Play game after all. Well, "live and learn" also still counts for CDPR I guess.
Anyway, thanks for the responses, everyone. I think I'm gonna get the game as soons as I have some time to play it (and/or maybe when they put a bit of a discount on it ). Will report my impressions here or in the general "what did you play" thread when that happens.

From what I've read it's not only niche, but pretty experimental. The way they're blending genres is unusual and I suspect it'd only meet financial expectations if it were on mobile or already had a huge fan base in the CCG community. Really, multiplayer is the way they'll make money off the title.

They also should have advertized the game better. I only found out about it about a month before release when CDprojekt finally started talking about the game on their twitter and putting a trailer on youtube. Still sales should get a bost with steam and later with console release and they should achieve their long term objectives. Anyway i finished the game tonight. What was the destiny of your characters? I tried playing a just and merciful Queen Meve and sometimes i got rewarded for it and in other times it bite me on the ass.

Can you tell me how you got both Reynard and Gascon to live? Someone told me that depending on what choices you make the other dies. I don't mind spoilers and although Gascon is my favorite, I don't want Renaryd to die. Too bad Gascon can't be her paramour though, more my type. As for Brouver, I heard that his approval can be neutral medium or high. High, you get the most dwarves, medium somewhere in the middle and low you just get a card. I'll find out soon enough, since that's where I'm headed now. Ugh and I can't stand Eyck, I'm never killing that dragon ever he can diddle himself. It's a good thing Rayla left you because something far worse happens on a side quest in Mahakam if she stays, I even kicked her out of my party because of it. I didn't kill any of the wounded elves in the field hospital, so I think she ended up staying because I didn't give Eldain a burial. I was trying to play a good and honest Meve and even honored his wish not to fight in the cemetery. I just became pissed after he still cut my soldiers throats, so I thought fuck him. Rayla will ask to stay after she takes you to Mahakam and you can still refuse her there if you wish before anything bad happens.

Rayla will ask to stay after she takes you to Mahakam and you can still refuse her there if you wish before anything bad happens. I don't know if those were the only variables or if some actually had some influence on who lives between the two:
It will be revealed later after Mahakam that Gascon was paid by Nilfgard to bring Meve to a ambush but he instead turn the ambush around and helped the lyrian troops kill the blackclads. Also Reynard was exchanging secret letters with Prince Villen in hopes of making him reconcille with his mother. I choose to forgive both of them since Gascon didn't followed through with the ambush and Reynard had good intentions in contacting Villem. There is also later a truce meeting between Meve and Villem and despite not agreeing with his terms Meve parted ways in a kind of bittersweet tone with her son. So maybe that was why he tried to help later. - Meve helped rebuild Gascon's family mausoleum that was desecrated.
- Also i send Gascon instead of Reynard to make a stealth attack at Rivian Castle.
- I took by force the balistas from a noblewoman castle who hated Meve and refused to help fight the Nilfgardian army. That made the final story battle at Rivian easier (maybe this one don't matte).
About Rayla, the asshole specifically mentioned Meve was too soft since she didn't want to kill elves on a hospital, so Meve said something along the lines that if she loved blood so much she should go drink some away from her. But yeah i also gave Eldain a burial. ps: i saw what can happen, after finishing Mahakam chapter, on a online walkthrough. Rayla is insane.
Brouve gave me three different dwarf units, so maybe the grumpy bastard liked Meve.

Thanks, I'll try to mimic this in the next part as much as possible since it seems like the best outcome imo. I wish I knew Rayla was going to go bananas. I mean, I knew she was unstable but I was hoping to keep her crazy contained. I felt so bad for the Dwarves, sorry guys Except for the whole Rayla and Eldain thing it seems like my decisions seem to be pretty close to yours so far.

I just finished the game yesterday and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I thought the story was very engaging and I loved the companions. I love Gwent so it was an easy decision on whether I was going to buy it. Though it's disappointing it isn't meeting expectations as I was hoping to see more like it. I am pretty sure the only way both Reynard and Gascon live is if you don't accept Villem's offer and don't take him prisoner. Though I can't say I recommend that either as it made me cry.

I'm pretty pissed at Villem but I can be a softy at times... With this information, I might have to let Reynard take one for the team. I'm confused right now but thank you cmoe . I would feel better, if I were able to go back to previous saves.

Quick question: is it true that there is no manual save but just a single autosave that is automatically overwritten by the game after every single decision? With no way to revert a choice or even a mistake if not by restarting the game?

As someone who is very indecisive about decisions and consequences, I have to say it threw me for a loop at first. But it was kind of freeing not being able to change my decisions and just living with the consequences for once. My only regret was I didn't realize I would lose the option to recruit a companion based on one of my responses, so if you decide to play, I would recommend recruiting everyone you can, when you can. Though I think I read somewhere people manually copy a save to a different location so they can go back to it if they want. I think you have to make sure you get the save before the choice you made locks in with an autosave. Sorry if that's confusing.

I'm actually a bit interested on this one. I've seen it a little bit on twitch on release and the lore parts catch my fancy. And the combat is actually not bad, I already was okay with gwent as it was, this is slightly more complex, I'm okay with that. We'll see later on though. Maybe on a sale or something.

I think you have to make sure you get the save before the choice you made locks in with an autosave. Sorry if that's confusing. No no, it's clear as day, thank you! Though, to keep going into the save folder in order to export your save in another location so that you can rollback it any time is not a viable option to me: that's too much unrequited work for something that should be provided in-game. I really wish devs would stop messing up with saving systems in RPG games, and that they just let us the option to revert a choice whenever we like, especially in case we clicked on an answer by mistake. I mean, it's a RPG not a damn survival horror.
I hope that at least the answers that you can choose are always clear and understandable so that in addition to not be able to revert you don't have also to guess what your character is going to say every time.

I reccomend playing like the developers intended by making a decision and then living with the consequences. I say the game is very rewarding on this matter either for good or for bad.

This game was going to be very niche despite the witcher franchise hook. It's not just the card game battles but the entire Nintendo 3DS JRPG conversation bar with pictures thing. I'm pretty sure the game does not LOOK appealing to most people.
Sorry to hear sales are below expectations. But it's not exactly surprising. There really was hardly any promotion. I didn't know either they were making a separate singleplayer campaign until a few weeks before release. Last I heard the online game would a´have singleplayer story campaign. Then suddenly a year later or so it was a separate game! I was so confused, lol.
