Just watched the final demo of gameplay for Star Citizen from space all the way down through atmo and onto a couple of planets... for those of you that had a look at it do you think we can expect this level of transition and detail? SC is cryengine and ME is frostbite but the tech and graphics means we should expect that kind of jouney? Also the way the ships 'jump' into hyper space looks pretty similar to the ME trailer Can we expect this kind of experience? Edit: and if you watch long enough that is totally a Thresher Maw

I'm doing a major speculation, but I think SC aims for a way bigger scale. Obviously ME:A will be heavy story driven and sure as hell you wont have that much liberty, as in traveling to any planet and land anywhere you want. However I wont deny that the idea of ME:A came to mind when I saw the SC presentation. Their progress is looking good btw, still heaps of work to be done, but they're getting there.

Star Citizen is going for a much wider scale. They want to essentially make a "Space Sim MMO" where you're free to do whatever style of play you like: Combat, Trading, Piracy, Exploration, etc.
To that end I'm not really expecting there to be a whole lot of parallels between the two beyond them both being sci-fi games. I suspect we wont have a space to atmos transition but instead just a loading screen.
Star Citizen does look to be coming along nicely, though.

Star Citizen does look like an amazing experience. I come away impressed everytime I take a look at anything to do with it. (I have not yet watched the above posted video, to be clear.) That said, it's an insanely ambitious undertaking. I hope it achieves all its goals, but it's not something ME could ever hope to emulate and remain accessible its present fanbase. The XBox and PlayStation consoles could never run anything close to Star Citizen. It's simply too much in every way. Honestly, many ME "fans" may not receive such a game all that well, anyway. As Cyonan said, Star Citizen is aiming to simulate life in space. While few here would complain about that depth of RP experience in a ME game, I suspect many in the broader ME audience are just looking to shoot some aliens with some context. I could be wrong. I'm basing that conjecture upon years of internet discussions regarding the IP. I do hope MEA achieves that feeling of space exploration. It's one of the things they've been on about for years, and they have the tech and know-how to do it, so I expect we will be pleased. I just think comparing SC and MEA is comparing apples and oranges. Other than being RPGs set in space, there isn't a lot of common ground, really. Expecting such is just setting things up for the inevitable troll debates and disappointment.

Star Citizen also has a SP component, Squadron 42. I could see that being closer to MEA than the MMO part of the game. Though from what little I've seen of Squadron 42 it seems to focus more on the military sci-fi angle than the exploration angle MEA seems to be going for.

Frankly I doubt it. The main reason is pacing. A secondary reason is that we wont be able to "fly" the Tempest. A third reason is that we have the Mako for planetary exploration.
SC gives you a total control of an agile kick ass space fighter craft or a slow cargo vessel. All designed to be manually piloted. The game is purposely designed for such activities. Not so Andromeda.
Mass Effect: Andromeda is designed to get you from one star system to another, orbit the planet and take you down to a landing zone on a seemingly fast and automated manner. The only vehicle you have some manual control is the Mako. Nothing else imo.
And, while I love the idea of piloting a shuttle craft from a ship to land on the planet, Bio chose to go with the boring Mako.
Oh, well.

Yeah, it's apples and oranges, as I said above. ME is an Action RPG third-person, cover-based shooter. SC is an RPG heavily built around piloting your vessels in a "boundless" galaxy. At their hearts, they are completely different, similar only in that they are RPGs set in space. They both look fun. The good news is that MEA will be finished and released in the foreseeable future. I'm largely ignorant of SC, and PC-gaming in general, but it gives me the feeling of a project that is so ambitious that it will never end. At what put do they draw the line, make concessions, cut content, etc? That's what gets games released to the public. Again, I don't follow the project that closely, but it seems like I've been reading about it forever, and I'm not sure there's an end in sight; though I've admittedly not bothered to check. I hope SC achieves all its goals, because it looks good, and many people have invested a ton of cash into it. As to ME, it will be ME. We know what to expect. If you've played DAI, you saw how they grew in a lot of ways with that game. I'm not talking about all of the fetch quests and empty zones, either, but the far more mature character writing. I'm hoping that will make its way into ME, as well. Same old ME with more mature writing, better audio/visuals and evolved gameplay? Yes please.

I dunno, I think the space-to-planet transition could be similar, based on this from the various leaks: Though I think it's been confirmed that we won't be flying the ship manually in any real sense, so it'll be more like watching a cutscene. These similarities, if they do exist, will be largely superficial, though. Andromeda's a singleplayer story-driven RPG, while Star Citizen's a space-sim MMO. Both involve roleplaying, naturally, but MMOs kind of can't offer the same storytelling depth as singleplayer RPGs, unless they try for an awkward half-step like The Old Republic--which, in truth, has always felt somewhat hamstrung as a story-driven RPG by its MMO trappings, at least to me. You'll still be able to roleplay in Star Citizen, of course, but it'll mostly just be in your head--well, unless you find a good roleplaying server or something. And even then, it still won't be an authored story in the same way. (Which, hey, is precisely why a lot of people like MMOs so much--because they offer such a different experience from singleplayer RPGs. It's just not really my sort of thing.) Squadron 42 sounds like it might be a little Mass Effect-ish, but I've gotten the impression it's gonna be a relatively roleplay-light experience. At least, if you define 'roleplaying' as making character decisions, dialogue choices and so on. I dunno, I think it's maybe a little harsh to lump people who aren't particularly fussed about the minutiae of fictional space travel in with people who 'are just looking to shoot some aliens with some context'. Now, I actually do give a shit about the minutiae of fictional space travel, but that's because I'm a sci-fi nerd who could probably walk the corridors of the Enterprise-D blindfolded with how many hours I've spent poring over the schematics for no good reason. This demonstrably doesn't really do anything to affect the depth of my 'RP experience', though, as I can be just as invested in, say my Warden from Dragon Age as I am in Shepard, in spite of the fact that I don't give nearly as many shits about how one properly swings a sword or casts a spell as I do about the way a Thanix Cannon works.

Is the Mako boring because of the previous version, or because it's a wheeled vehicle?

After a long long time of not much seeming to happen with SC, it looks likes it coming together. It's hard not be impressed by the latest vids. The level of detail on everything is absurd, and the (not quite full scale, but close enough) planets look better than any other procedurally generated ones I've seen, certainly at FPS levels.
Just a shame it's an MMO really, as I don't really have any interest in interacting with real people in a computer game. I don't even know how it's all supposed to work in practice.
If they'd taken the route of making it an open world single player / team multiplayer game, probably with fewer main locations, but more story and characters, I'd be all over it this.
I might give it a shot, but it's not clear how much I'd actually enjoy it, despite the insane tech.
Given Robert's apparent love for attention to detail and animations, I was half expecting to have to watch the character actually change out of his flight suit and into his armour.
But no, I don't expect this from MEA. I hope they concentrate on the things that make Mass Effect.

Sounds like it's currently delayed indefinitely. Gee, what a shocker. As for the OPs question, I'm going to say the answer is no. I don't recall where or when, but I seem to recall BioWare saying that we wouldn't be controlling the ship in any flight-sim kind of capacity. That pretty much precludes space/planet transitions for anything but cutscenes. If they include that, it will just be to cover up load screens.

I don't think we can expect a similar experience. Star Citizen's tech is so far ahead of everything else when it comes to space games that it's not even funny. The real kicker, as far as I'm concerned, came after the actual gameplay demo, when Sean Tracy showed off the world editor built by Foundry 42 Germany. The moon up there in the sky wasn't painted on a sky box, it was an actual in-game moon, rendered at full distance, and during the editor demo, they flew a ship up to that moon without any loading involved.
In other games, the sky is blue because the artists set it to blue. In Star Citizen, the sky is blue because the engine knows what to make of which type of atmosphere is present and what type of sun is shining on it.

I actually don't see many similarities between the two games, excepting the setting. Star Citizen's PU is a hodge-podge of many genres, and it's SP seems to be military focused. ME:A will be exploration focused, with TPS mechanics.
