Joining Ubisoft Quebec Citywww.linkedin.com/pulse/joining-ubisoft-quebec-city-mike-laidlaw/So here’s a cool new thing: I have joined Ubisoft’s Quebec City studio as the Creative Director for a not-yet-announced project! As you might know, I’ve been working as a consultant for the past year. It’s been an amazing experience, as it allowed me to work with teams of all different sizes and compositions around the world. In particular, I’d like to congratulate the Waylanders team: I worked with them for over one year and they just successfully completed their Kickstarter. Sadly, I won’t be able to work with them full time, but I firmly believe they are in great hands now that Emily Grace Buck has joined the team and is taking over many of the parts I was handling. The most exciting aspect of consulting was the opportunity to meet many incredibly talented folks across the industry and offer insight on some truly interesting projects. One of which, in fact, is the one I’m joining here at Ubisoft. In my months working with the team here, I’ve been really impressed with the combination of passion and raw talent in the studio. If you’ve played the excellent Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – which was principally developed here in Quebec City – you already have some taste of what that combination can produce. Alas, I can’t discuss exactly what I’m doing, but I will say it’s exciting enough to make me move half way across the continent. My family will be joining me and while the studio is very comfortable and welcoming to those of us who speak English, I’m excited to finally put those years of French classes to the test as I explore historic and beautiful Quebec City. Just have to…you know…shake 20 years of rust off. Pas de problème! Incidentally, the studio’s hiring right now should you care to join me in this particular adventure: quebec.ubisoft.com/en/jobs/- So do you think Mike will be working on the next AC?

Just when I thought the only thing Ubi Quebec needs is some Bioware touch for their games They got the open world nailed down and lately the combat is vastly improved. But they just dabble in the RPG story aspect and really can get a boost there. Give us companions (no need to be followers) and a home base with story progression. Then they can trademark themselves as "Ubiware".
So, the question - is it the next AC? Is it the mystical Ubisoft space RPG? We want answers!
Edit: I do have an acquaintance that works for Ubisoft and did stuff for the last AC games. Time to refresh those CIA interrogation techniques.

I was just thinking, if it is AC he's working on, then it wouldn't actually be the next one.
Ubisoft Montreal & Ubisoft Quebec City switch for each release, which is why they can get them out so fast. So it would be the AC after then next release.

This is a great get for Ubisoft. As we all know, Mike is as talented as he is friendly. Which is to say, he's awesome.

I guess if Mike's been there for months, he may have dipped a toe in Odyssey (as it was spearheaded by Quebec's studio). There's still quite a bit of content to come for that game too...

Just saw the news. This is a great pickup for Ubisoft. With the success of AC:Odyssey, Laidlaw is a perfect fit. I hope they launch a lot more RPGs in the future.
Goodbye Bioware...

This is great news. AC Odyssey is a great game and shows the potential of future AC games. With ML onboard for this franchise, I hope it gets even better.

It's not a bad pairing considering Ubisoft has already been getting more involved with RPG aspects like dialogue and some choices which we know Mike has experience with. I'm not expecting it to be very in depth however as ubisoft still streamlines the experience either way 🤷

Mike Laidlaw Quebec update: - Meetings are a thing I realized I kind of missed (when productive, and these are). - Taking three hours of 1:1 French class each week. Delighted with both the fact the class is offered and the teacher. - Poutine continues to be exceptional and hard to resist.
Also, humorously, people keep apologizing to me about the cold. Worried they might think I’m from somewhere significantly warmer than Edmonton or that I didn’t grow up repairing farm machinery in the winter.
Some are surprised I’m Canadian. Maybe I “code” too American?

Yeah, that was... quick. I'm curious how that all went down. Probably worked on an undisclosed project that was cancelled after Ubisoft reworked the team that was overseeing game development after their latest "flop" (which caused all their games to be pushed back).

Even though it was based in the Camelot fantasy it doesn't mean it was good either, just feels like Schreier is doing everything he can to pile on Ubisoft to sell clicks.

It sounded interesting (except maybe the co-op part). But as I understand it few projects ever make it beyond the initial concept (~1/20), and out of those that do, less than half get of the early exploration of the idea.
