I got Madden '17 a few weeks ago and have been playing it a fair bit, and I was just curious as to what other sports games people on the BSN played, and if they're fans of the actual sport IRL. I'm not a huge football fan, but I've got a fairly in-depth knowledge of the game and I'll watch the regular season from time to time.

FIFA 08 and College Hoops 2K8 were played to death by my friends and me in college. I haven't bought a new sports game in a long time, but if they ever released a Madden or NCAA Football for PC I'd buy it immediately.

It's more of a social or party game to me than anything, and I don't really hang out with anyone that plays video games at all anymore.

Sports games are part of my nightly routine. I come home, pop open some beer...fire up a few games of MLB The Show and put on whatever show I am watching at the moment ( currently its season 4 of True Blood) on my laptop..........I will usually play about 4-5 games....by then I have finished my 1st 40 oz...then I bust out ME3MP, open my 2nd 40 oz and throw on a sci-fi movie or sci fi tv show on my laptop.....then I play till I pass out.
I play other sports games as well....NBA2K ( is my all time favorite) and some older madden games...15 & 16 ...I didnt play any maddens for about a 6 year period cuz I fell out of love with football.

FIFA 17 actually has an option to play a personalized story as a rookie sensation in the English Premier League named Alex Hunter, with Mass Effect-style dialogue choices in cutscenes between actual matches. It's fun, though the classic keyboard controls limit some of the finesse moves that I assume would make Hunter a better player. It's not clear to me exactly how much is pre-scripted and how much changes based on my dialogue choices and how well I play. Has anyone else played it? I'm near the end of the first season, and so far I've had the following happen: - Signed with West Ham United, as did Hunter's childhood friend Gaz Walker
- Didn't make the squad for the European tournament
- Got loaned out to Newcastle, a team in the Championship League (a level below the Premier League)
- Played reasonably well at Newcastle, with either a goal or assist in the majority of games
- Made friends with Danny Williams, a player who'd been kind of a cocky jerk in preseason tryouts, while Gaz (who was still at West Ham) started acting more egotistical
- Got called back up to West Ham at the same time Gaz got transferred to Tottenham (West Ham's big rival)
- Became West Ham's starting striker, have registered a few goals and assists so far
- Ended up facing Tottenham in a big late-season match and won 2-0 with Hunter getting an assist
- Had a sort-of reconciliation with Gaz after the match, but he seemed annoyed about Hunter and Williams having become friends

I want some developer to take up the rights to the Blitz series of games, those were fun, if rough around the edges. Basically the GTA version of American football, where you score bonuses for causing big injuries and you can do stuff like frame opposing teams' players for drug possession to make them miss games, or hire prostitutes to distract them the night before the game.

Seems like not much changes, I took my agent's advice and signed for a smaller team to get more game time. Chose Watford, got pushed out by them bringing in Harry Kane. That idea was pretty lulzy to me as a Tottenham fan. Also ended up at Newcastle, Gaz has become a twat and twitter is raving about me and Williams having a great partnership on the field despite him being in the reserves. So yeah, heavily scripted.

West Ham finished 4th in the league and there was a cutscene with Alex feeling down about not winning, which seemed kind of odd - maybe the point is that he's young and over-ambitious, but I'd have thought they'd still be pleased to be going to the Champion's League. I then won the FA Cup game against Gaz's team only to have the game crash after the celebration - twice. I gather that's the end? Trying to decide if I want to replay it yet again or just watch the ending on YouTube. What seems odd about the whole scenario is that Alex is sent out on loan partly because the team signs Harry Kane, but then when he comes back, Kane gets benched in favor of making Alex the starting striker even though Kane's skill rating is much higher. I'd have thought that at most, the two of them might start together in a formation with two strikers, or with Alex as a winger or CAM. BTW, did you have "LiLi" and "Toro" on the Watford roster with you? I'm assuming that they are fictional players who get included on whatever team Alex selects.

Had Toro there, at least, so yeah probably both. I'm still on the first season, so don't know what happens later.

Just saw this thread..lol....I haven't touched a Madden game since 2004....Once i tried "ESPN 2004" and then "NFL 2k5?"...that was it. I never went back to Madden after that. The gameplay and presentation sold me. I just recently purchased another Ps2 just so i could play it again. I was close to trying Madden 19, but after watching vids.....eh it looks good but there are still some wonky animations and to me Madden just feels like the players are sliding or ice skating instead of actually running. Animations have gotten better, but their presentation is still trash...how in the world does a 14 year old game still have better presentation and halftime show than a game on superior hardware? The game looks great tho....i will admit that, but i can't purchase Madden until they get their animation issues together.... NFL2k5...still holds up well today and even tho it's starting to show it's age a bit, the game is still a blast to play.... I haven't purchased a basketball game since NBA2k10....not really a huge basketball fan like that, but i was impressed with NBA2k19.....i like the presentation they have with players talking about what they need to do to win games during the end of the quarter i believe and the post game is done really well too.....i'm just real big on that presentation stuff because it just makes the overall experience more authentic. I will probably pick it up once the price drops on it.....

NBA Jams from the 90s on PS2; hours of fun with your buds, and your buds.
Still play it occasionally on an emulator.
Madden... I used to be pretty serious about Madden, on the PC, in the 90s. The gameplay was very rough, and poor controls, but the simulation side was quite excellent and the game was actually optimized for PC. You could develop your own offense, designing every block, every route. You could design your defense, draw your zone coverages or choose man coverage and match up how you wanted. Design custom stunts and loops for your d-line... It was awesome, for a guy that firmly believed he was destined to be All-Pro and eventually a HoF coach. (Yeah, lol)
I continued to play Madden for a few years into the 2000s on console, even though I always preferred Tecmo Bowl games for fun-factor. But at a certain point, the gameplay mechanics were changed and I never really got the feel for catching the ball in the new system, or how to use the oomph button or whatever lame name they called it. Also, the gameplay became dumbed down - spin moves all of sudden could do magical things if you spammed them, for instance, instead of resulting in bad things more often than not (check the stats if you think I'm wrong). It no longer had anything to do with football knowledge and strategy, which is really what makes American Football a good game. The most talented team doesn't always win, and that is down to planning and strategy more often than freak plays. Madden became too video-gamey, and lost me.
Making the Run-N-Shoot in old PC Madden was awesome. If you got the right guys (mobile line with a ton of talent), a solid all-around RB1 that can pass block and catch well, a decent QB with mobility, and a deep WR/TE pool without stars or scrubs, it was unstoppable. Still would be in the NFL, and if the Houston Oilers hadn't blown a 31 point halftime lead against the Bills, they would have won that Super Bowl and we would still see the Run-N-Shoot in the league. Warren Moon man.... That guy was amazing. Especially in Tecmo Super Bowl lol!

Still playing FIFA. "The Journey" has some aspects you can enjoy if you're a Bioware fan. It starts as the story of Alex Hunter, an up-and-coming rising star, in 2017, and over the last two games has expanded to cover the soccer careers of his friend Danny Williams and his half-sister Kim Hunter. There are Bioware-style dialogue choices, plus other "big decisions" like who to hire as your agent and what team to sign with in FIFA 17. The main drawback is that I can't always tell if the game is sometimes letting me win because it's necessary for the main characters' teams to win a particular game for the story to advance. Similarly, recently one of the lead character got benched for "lack of focus" and I wasn't sure if this was entirely pre-scripted or if it was because I hadn't done very well in the most recent practice session.
The one thing that's annoying in the latest version is that Danny is now playing for whatever team you selected for Alex Hunter (the lead character) in FIFA 2017, and you're pre-scripted into a scenario where the team is playing in the Champions' League and has to advance to the knockout round. Well, I had selected West Ham for Alex in FIFA17, and if you follow the English Premier League at all, you know that West Ham isn't in the best shape, so the idea of them being competitive in the Champions' League seems a little silly. (And indeed, I got my ass kicked in the first couple Champions' League games with them.)

I don't really play newer sports games other than the odd NHL game. I'll love Madden 2004 till I die tho. I play it as a dumbed down football sim, which is how I like it. Madden hasn't topped it in my view since then.
